Explanatory and modifying factors of the association between sex and depression onset during adolescence: An exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is twice as high in women as in men and this difference already emerges during adolescence. Because the mechanisms underlying this sex-difference remain poorly understood, we took a bottom-up approach to identify factors explaining the sex-MDD relationship. METHODS: Data came from the TRacking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey (TRAILS), a population study investigating youths' development from age 11 into adulthood. We assessed multiple baseline covariates (e.g., demographic, social and psychological) at ages 11-13 years and MDD

Very-Low-Dose Levodopa Therapy for Pediatric Neurological Disorders: A Preliminary Questionnaire in Japan.

Introduction: Post-synaptic dopamine receptor supersensitivity (DARSS) has been extensively researched by Dr. Masaya Segawa, who has investigated the efficacy of very-low-dose levodopa therapy (VLDT; 0.5-1 mg/kg/day). Considerable Japanese research supports the possibility that VLDT could be used to treat pediatric neurological disorders. We conducted an on-line survey in 2014 to collect real-world data on the use of VLDT to treat DARSS. Methods: A two-step survey, including a screening test and questionnaire, was posted on a private internet site that could be accessed via the VLDT Research G

Maternal behavioral health symptom profiles in early family life: complexity and context.

Behavioral health problems affect at least 15% of mothers, but few studies have examined how different problems cluster together. Characterizing symptom profiles and their correlates early in the family life cycle can extend existing understanding beyond that provided by studies based on single problems. Mothers in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study, a national birth cohort of racially diverse and mostly unmarried mothers (N = 4205), reported depression, anxiety, and substance dependence symptoms. Latent class analysis (LCA) identified mothers' symptom profiles in their children's

Emotional and Behavioral Correlates of Persisting Specific Learning Disabilities in Written Language during Middle Childhood and Early Adolescence.

Parents completed the Behavior Assessment System for Children-Second Edition Parent Report Scale (BASC2-PRS) while their children (94 boys, 61 girls; M=11 years-11 months) were given tests. Evidence-based profiles of multiple test scores and history (emergence and persistence) were used to assign to groups without specific learning disabilities in written language (SLDs-WL) (n= 42 control) or with SLDs-WL: (n=29 dysgraphia, n=65 dyslexia, or n=19 oral and written language learning disability [OWL LD]). Parent ratings fell in the clinical or at risk ranges for some individuals in all groups, bu

A longitudinal examination of different etiological pathways to alcohol use and misuse.

BACKGROUND: Sher, Grekin, and Williams (2005) pointed out the existence of 4 main etiological, but not mutually exclusive, models that might explain the development of alcohol use and misuse. The aim of the present study was to explore 3 of these 4 pathways in which psychological (personality and drinking motives) and environmental (child maltreatment) variables may play a relevant role: positive affect regulation, negative affect regulation, and deviance proneness. METHODS: Three hundred and fourteen young adults in the 18 to 29 year age range completed different personality, alcohol use, an

Evaluation of an individualized counseling approach as part of a multicomponent school-based program to prevent weight-related problems among adolescent girls.

School-based interventions show inconsistent results in reducing weight-related problems. One limitation of school programs is that they do not easily allow for individualization of targeted messages. An important question regards the feasibility and effectiveness of implementing individual sessions within broader school-based programs. This article evaluates the feasibility and effectiveness of the individual counseling component of New Moves, a school-based program designed to prevent weight-related problems in adolescent girls, which was evaluated in a randomized controlled study. Visual field asymmetries in attention vary with self-reported attention deficits.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether an index of self-reported attention deficits predicts the pattern of visual field asymmetries observed in behavioral measures of attention. Studies of "normal" subjects do not present a consistent pattern of asymmetry in attention functions, with some studies showing better left visual field (LVF) performance, others showing no asymmetry or even a right visual field (RVF) advantage. Here we found that a participant variable (a measure of self-reported attention problems) may help to explain these inconsistencies. We used Conners' Adult ADHD Ra

Elevated Gestational IL-13 During Fetal Development Is Associated With Hyperactivity and Inattention in Eight-Year-Old Children.

Maternal immune activation (MIA) during fetal development leads to behavioral and psychological disorders in the offspring. Concomitantly, insufficient supply of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) is suspected to contribute to early neuronal maldevelopment due to the immune modulatory capabilities of PUFAs. However, human data are missing considering both of these aspects and their impact on children's behavioral outcomes. In line, this study aimed to elucidate the influence of gestational cytokines and PUFA-containing lipids during late pregnancy on behavioral sequelae in childhood, particul

Risk Factors for Problem Gambling in California: Demographics, Comorbidities and Gambling Participation.

While population surveys have been carried out in numerous jurisdictions internationally, little has been done to assess the relative strength of different risk factors that may contribute to the development of problem gambling. This is an important preparatory step for future research on the etiology of problem gambling. Using data from the 2006 California Problem Gambling Prevalence Survey, a telephone survey of adult California residents that used the NODS to assess respondents for gambling problems, binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify demographic characteristics, healt

Validity of the CBCL/YSR DSM-IV scales Anxiety Problems and Affective Problems.

BACKGROUND: The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Youth Self-Report (YSR) are widely used for clinical and research purposes. Fairly recently, new 'DSM-IV scales' designated Anxiety Problems and Affective Problems were developed. Knowledge about the validity of these scales is needed. METHODS: In a referred sample of 277 6- to 18-year-olds, it was examined to what extent CBCL/YSR scores on the Anxiety Problems and Affective Problems scale predicted DSM-IV diagnoses of separation anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobia, major depressive disorder, or dysthymia. A review for school nursing professionals: adolescent depression.

Adolescent depression occurs within various developmental, social, and biologic contexts, and is manifested by traditional depressive symptoms such as fatigue, loss of interest in daily activities, weight changes, sleep disturbances, sad moods, difficulty with concentration, behavioral agitation or lethargy, feelings of worthlessness, and recurrent thoughts of death. Depressed adolescents may combine these symptoms with certain additional behaviors such as academic deterioration, substance abuse, sexual activity, somatic complaints, eating disorders, conduct disorders, and other risk-taking be

Psychological-behavioral risk profiles of adolescents and their associations with suicidal behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent suicidal behaviors pose a critical public health challenge. This study examined the co-occurrence patterns of psychological and behavioral risk factors and evaluated their associations with suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SA). METHODS: A multicenter adolescent survey conducted in 2023-2024 (n = 19,312) collected sociodemographic, psychological, and behavioral data. Complex survey logistic regression was applied to identify factors associated with SI and SA. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to derive psychological-behavioral risk profiles, and their discr

Prevalence and treatment of mental, behavioral, and developmental disorders in children with co-occurring autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: A population-based study.

There is a lack of nationally representative studies examining the co-occurrence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. This study examines comorbid mental, behavioral, and developmental disorders (MBDDs) and associated treatment modalities for children with co-occurring ASD and ADHD. Cross-sectional analyses were conducted using data from the pooled 2016-2018 National Survey of Children's Health (sample n = 102,341). Nationally representative prevalences were estimated for sociodemographic variables, comorbidities, psychotropic medic

Reward-related attentional capture and cognitive inflexibility interact to determine greater severity of compulsivity-related problems.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Neurocognitive processes are key drivers of addictive and compulsive disorders. The current study examined whether reward-related attentional capture and cognitive inflexibility are associated with impulsive and/or compulsive personality traits, and whether these cognitive characteristics interact to predict greater compulsivity-related problems across obsessive-compulsive and drinking behaviors. METHODS: One-hundred and seventy-three participants (mean age = 34.5 years, S.D = 8.4, 42% female) completed an online visual search task to measure reward-related attentio

Cigarette Smoking, Mental Health, and Other Substance Use among Court-Involved Youth.

Background: Justice-involved youth are at risk to become cigarette smokers as they age, leading to a variety of poor health outcomes. However, little is known about cigarette use among justice-involved youth, especially youth supervised in the community where there is ample opportunity to smoke. Objective: This study investigates the prevalence of cigarette smoking and the associations between cigarette smoking, emotional and behavioral functioning, and other substance use among a sample of first-time offending court-involved, non-incarcerated (FTO-CINI) youth. Methods: Youth were recruited fr

Effects of childhood adversity and resilience on Taiwanese youth health behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can leave negative impacts on one's health behaviors or social functioning later in life. Resilient characteristics have been shown to mitigate effects against risk behaviors in developing adolescents. However, clinical and research attention has rarely been given to jointly consider the effects of ACEs and resilient characteristics on health behaviors in Taiwanese youth. METHOD: A total of 200 individuals aged 15-22 years were recruited from primary care settings, communities, and schools. Participants completed questionnaires assessing their

Predictor variables of happiness and its connection with risk and protective factors for health.

Great thinkers, philosophers, scientists, and artists from History have often been concerned about one of the most important elements of life: happiness. The study had four goals: (1) To analyze possible differences in feelings of happiness as a function of sex and age; (2) To explore the relations of happiness with risk factors (psychopathological symptoms, behavior problems) and protective factors (self-concept-self-esteem, cooperative behavior, social skills) for health; (3) To identify predictor variables of happiness; and (4) To explore whether self-esteem mediates the relationship betwee

Nationwide survey of psychopathology and bullying in tic disorders with and without ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and tic disorder (TD) often co-occur. Given the well-established strong link between bullying and adverse psychiatric outcomes, understanding how TD and comorbid ADHD jointly interact to influence bullying involvement is crucial for informing clinical assessment and intervention. This study investigated psychopathology, bullying experiences, and their associations in children with TD, accounting for the influence ADHD, using data from a nationwide epidemiological survey. METHODS: The sample included 4816 children in grades 3, 5, and

Female adopted Chinese-American youth's sense of exclusion and short-and long-term adjustment.

In this article, we tested if female adopted Chinese youth's sense of exclusion predicted their behavioral adjustment and mental disorder diagnoses concurrently (Study 1) and longitudinally 5 years later (Study 2). In Study 1, 224 adoptees (M = 13.6 years, SD = 2.1) provided survey data on sense of exclusion (as indexed by ethnic marginality, ethnic identity search, and negative feelings toward adoption) and Internalizing Problems (i.e., anxiety, withdrawal, and somatic complaints), measured with the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL)-Youth Self-Report.
