Female gonadotroph adenomas with endocrinological symptoms are uncommon. Six cases of such adenomas have been reported in the literature: two were girls who presented with precocious puberty and four were premenopausal women with accompanying multiple ovarian cysts. We describe here a 10-year-old Japanese girl with a gonadotroph macroadenoma and present detailed morphological findings of the tumor. Sixteen children underwent 18 operations for radical resection of chiasmatic-hypothalamic tumors. In the past 10 years, 15 children with bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia have been studied at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children. There were 5 boys and 10 girls. Nine were first-born and they presented at a mean age of 5 months (range: 4 days to 25 months). In a recently published prospective study, Villamor et al. found increased risk of early menarche in vitamin D-deficient girls compared to vitamin D-sufficient girls in Bogota, Columbia. The association was not fully explained by differences in body mass index-for-age z-scores. The mechanism for the association, if real, has not been elucidated, but could potentially involve vitamin D receptor polymorphisms. Early menarche and vitamin D deficiency are both associated with poor health outcomes, and further exploration of their association is important for women's health.

We report the first case of maternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 14 in humans. The male proband inherited a balanced 13;14 Robertsonian translocation from his mother. Molecular studies showed that neither chromosome 14 was of paternal origin. The proband is of above average intelligence, but he has hydrocephalus, a bifid uvula, premature puberty, short stature, and small testes. It is not known if the clinical findings are related or coincidental to the uniparental disomy.
