Ocular manifestations of children with atopic dermatitis in Saudi Arabia.

AIM: To examine the incidence of ocular abnormalities in children with atopic dermatitis (AD) in Saudi Arabia and its association with the severity of AD. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study on 50 children with AD who were between 5 and 16 years of age. The severity of AD was evaluated using the SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index. All the children underwent slit lamp exams, visual acuity assessment, intraocular pressure measurement, and corneal topography. The children were considered to have an ophthalmic abnormality if one or more of the following signs were present: glaucoma, ke…

Evaluation of Uveitis Induced in Rats by a Type I Collagen Peptide as a Model for Childhood Arthritis-associated Uveitis.

Chronic asymptomatic and acute symptomatic anterior uveitis are forms of ocular inflammation associated with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) Chronic JIA-associated uveitis is characterized by young age of onset, female predilection, oligoarthritis, and antinuclear antibody (ANA) positivity. Acute JIA-associated uveitis predominantly affects older male juveniles who also develop enthesitis. A type I collagen-derived peptide (melanin-associated antigen [MAA]) induces anterior uveitis in rodents. In this study, we evaluated MAA-induced uveitis in rats as a potential model for JIA-uveitis. We

Two-way adjustable double-knots intrascleral fixation and single sclerotomy looping technique: a novel minimal invasive adjustable intraocular lens fixation technique.

BACKGROUND: IOL fixation without capsular support presents challenges for surgeons. Although innovative techniques were developed to address subluxated IOLs, adjustable IOL fixation methods are seldom reported. We introduce a novel two-way adjustable double-knots intrascleral fixation combined with single sclerotomy looping technique for fixing intraocular lenses (IOL) or IOL-capsular bags. METHODS: A bent 30-gauge needle threaded with 8 - 0 polypropylene was introduced into the eye. A gripping forceps assisted the haptic looping. Two overhand knots were made with 8 - 0 polypropylene thread.

Short-pulse laser plus subthreshold diffuse laser for serous retinal detachment in dome-shaped macula.

BACKGROUND: First described by Gaucher and associates in 2008, dome-shaped macula (DSM) is an anterior convex protrusion of the macula visible on OCT (optical coherence tomography). Visual impairment in DSM results mainly from sub-foveal serous retinal detachment (SRD). Herein, this original study from retrospective data analysis evaluate the anatomical and functional effects of Pascal® short-pulse (SP) laser plus endpoint management (EpM) subthreshold diffuse laser (SDL) in patients with SRD due to DSM. METHODS: This retrospective study included seven consecutive patients (eight eyes) with S

Differential Diagnosis of Keratoconus Based on New Technologies.

Keratoconus (KC) must be distinguished from other corneal ectatic diseases and thinning disorders for stage-appropriate and suitable management of each condition. The most relevant corneal pathologies that may imitate the tomographic KC pattern are pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD), keratoglobus, posterior keratoconus, and Fuchs-Terrien marginal degeneration (FTMD). In moderate cases of KC, differentiation is typically possible using slit lamp examination and corneal tomography with evaluation of the location of the corneal thinning region. In early cases, however, differential diagnosis ma…
