HYPOTHESIS: A functional vestibular prosthesis can be implanted in human such that electrical stimulation of each semicircular canal produces canal-specific eye movements while preserving vestibular and auditory function.
BACKGROUND: A number of vestibular disorders could be treated with prosthetic stimulation of the vestibular end organs. We have previously demonstrated in rhesus monkeys that a vestibular neurostimulator, based on the Nucleus Freedom cochlear implant, can produce canal-specific electrically evoked eye movements while preserving auditory and vestibular function. An investigat

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants (CIs) restore hearing by directly stimulating spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs), yet auditory outcomes remain highly variable. Increasing evidence suggests that SGN survival alone incompletely predicts CI performance; instead, transcriptional programmes governing neuronal excitability/synaptic transmission, structural plasticity, trophic-metabolic support and injury/inflammation may better reflect neural functional competence.
METHODS: We re-analysed publicly available cochlear transcriptomic datasets spanning development, adulthood and injury/degeneration. Primary

OBJECTIVES: There are no approved pharmacologic therapies for chronic sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). The combination of CHIR99021+valproic acid (CV, FX-322) has been shown to regenerate mammalian cochlear hair cells ex vivo. The objectives were to characterize the cochlear pharmacokinetic profile of CV in guinea pigs, then measure FX-322 in human perilymph samples, and finally assess safety and audiometric effects of FX-322 in humans with chronic SNHL.
STUDY DESIGNS: Middle ear residence, cochlear distribution, and elimination profiles of FX-322 were assessed in guinea pigs. Human perilym

BACKGROUND: The delivery of drugs into the inner ear is a challenging field of study due to the complex cochlear anatomy and physiology. The creation of an intracochlear device that allows for short- and long-term intracochlear delivery of the drugs with a minimal invasive technology is needed to prevent or treat conditions that can potentially prevent the development of permanent hearing loss.
AIM: This study intends to test the efficacy of DXM-infused PLGA microneedles created in our laboratory in an in vivo animal model of acute ototoxic injury.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-four male Norw

BACKGROUND: In models, hearing impairment in children is linked to parental distress. Empiric data about coping with this stress is small, however, as there are virtually only cross section studies which we can refer to.
METHODS: 124 mothers and fathers of 61 children with a hearing impairment, who had their first hearing aid fitted respectively, had been presented to the pre-examination for a Cochlear Implantation (CI). Over a period of two years five respectively six measurements of their psycho-social distress were taken. In addition, the speech status of the children was evaluated.

Objective and subjective tinnitus can often be differentiated based on comprehensive history, physical examination, and audiogram. Examples of objective tinnitus include vascular abnormalities, palatal myoclonus, patulous eustachian tube, and stapedial/tensor tympani muscle spasm. Subjective tinnitus is usually associated with hearing loss. Rarely, tinnitus is the result of an underlying condition. In these cases, imaging and additional testing may be indicated. Classification of the type, quality, and intensity of tinnitus is helpful in the work-up and treatment of tinnitus. Treatment modalit

Diagnostic audiologic procedures for otosclerosis are effective tools in identifying this condition. Audiometric data usually demonstrate a conductive hearing loss at the early stages of otosclerosis. Modern middle ear analysis procedures are becoming more popular in the better diagnosis of otosclerosis. In clinical practice, cochlear otosclerosis can also be observed. Audiologic rehabilitation of otosclerosis includes fitting of hearing aids and implantable hearing devices. Current hearing technology enables patients who do not pursue surgical correction to function well and significantly imp

Advances in magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography have made a more detailed imaging of the inner ear possible, and magnetic resonance imaging also allows the evaluation of the auditory pathways inside the brainstem. This has led to new possibilities in patients with congenital deafness, cochlear implant candidates, patients with inner ear infection, Tullio phenomenon, acoustic schwannomas and lesions along the auditory pathway, which have been described recently. New animal studies, which have evaluated intracochlear enhancement, encourage radiologists and neuro-otologists to push

Bacterial meningitis is an important cause of acquired sensorineural deafness in childhood. Deafness following meningitis may be progressive. Previous reports have shown deterioration in hearing up to 12 years after the illness. We present two cases of sensorineural deafness following meningitis. Severe to profound sensorineural hearing losses were detected immediately after meningitis in these patients. The hearing subsequently deteriorated in both cases. Deterioration in hearing thresholds occurred 17 years after the illness in one case. In the other patient the hearing got progressively wor

Although cochlear implants (CI) are the standard of care for profound sensorineural hearing loss they are technically constrained by the tendency of electrical current to spread within the fluid-filled chambers of the cochlea. This limits the resolution of individual electrodes and patients' perceptions of complex sounds. Infrared irradiation has been proposed as an alternative to electrical stimulation because it can elicit auditory responses while being spatially constrained, theoretically promising higher-fidelity hearing for the deaf. However, conflicting reports locate the site of infrare

The aim of this study was to evaluate audiological characteristics and parents' opinions on hearing device use in children with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss (USNHL) who attended a tertiary-level audiologic center. The medical charts of 70 children aged 6 to 12 years with USNHL were reviewed. In 51.4% of cases, the children were diagnosed with USNHL after the age of 2 years. The main causes of USNHL were congenital cytomegalovirus infection (21.4%) and unilateral cochlear nerve hypoplasia (12.9%). The percentage of patients wearing a hearing device was 45.7% (32/70); of these, 28 (87.5

Background: Through the direct electrical stimulation of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) of the hearing nerve, cochlear implants overcome functionally impaired or missing hair cells in patients with profound to severe hearing loss. In routine clinical fitting, regions with severe local SGN degeneration (modiolar "dead regions") cannot be identified. As a result, the electrical fields of neighboring electrodes are broadened, which can lead to increased channel interaction and, consequently, poorer speech understanding and hearing. The objective of this study was to ascertain whether neural healt

INTRODUCTION: A narrow duplicated internal auditory canal (IAC) is an extremely rare anomaly, likely associated with congenital sensorineural hearing loss due to aplasia/hypoplasia of the vestibulocochlear nerve or the cochlear branch alone. We aimed to review our experience with IAC duplication, describe its clinical characteristics, and present a literature review.
CASE PRESENTATION: Our Otology database was searched for children who showed duplication of the IAC. Clinical characteristics of two children with bilateral duplication of the IAC are described. Data regarding clinical history, a
