OBJECTIVE: Cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) may have prognostic implications for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We aimed to determine the impact of discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) and malar rash on SLE disease activity.
METHODS: Data were analyzed from the Toronto Lupus Clinic prospective cohort study. We compared SLE patients with active DLE or malar rash at SLE diagnosis to SLE patients who never developed CLE. Outcomes were assessed at one and five years, including Adjusted Mean Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000 (AMS).

OBJECTIVES: We had for aim to describe the epidemiologic and clinic characteristics of murine typhus in a series of 43 serologically confirmed cases, in our region.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Serologic screening for IgG and IgM against Rickettsia typhi was performed in 1024 patients during three years (2006-2008). The characteristics of patients with a positive serology were examined retrospectively. One hundred and seventy sera obtained from blood donors were tested to detect IgG against R. typhi to determine the seroprevalence of the infection.

Several spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) previously believed to be nonpathogenic are speculated to contribute to infections commonly misdiagnosed as Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) in the United States, but confirmation is difficult in cases with mild or absent systemic symptoms. We report an afebrile rash illness occurring in a patient 4 days after being bitten by a Rickettsia montanensis-positive Dermacentor variabilis tick. The patient's serological profile was consistent with confirmed SFGR infection.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Systemic-onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis (s-JIA) is a systemic disease often accompanied by a fever. We examined 16 patients with s-JIA and reported the clinical manifestations, laboratory data, treatments and outcomes.
METHODS: From 1984 to 2007, 16 children (aged 1-16 years), who were diagnosed as having s-JIA, were admitted to the Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. We retrospectively reviewed their medical charts.

DESIGN: The medical records of all febrile infants with a bulging fontanelle who underwent a lumbar puncture from January 2000 to February 2008 in Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, a university affiliated hospital in central Israel, were identified.

We report a full-term neonate presenting with symptomatic congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection with hepatosplenomegaly, 'blueberry muffin' rash, intracranial calcifications, thrombocytopenia and respiratory distress.
