INTRODUCTION: Intramedullary nailing (IMN) is the preferred treatment for femoral shaft fractures in adults. Although previous studies published good outcomes, some controversies remain. The purpose of this retrospective study was to identify factors that influence outcome after IMN for femoral shaft fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between July 1998 and July 2013, we treated 230 patients with 248 femoral shaft fractures. Statistical analyses were performed to determine predictors of nonunion. The following set of variables was selected based on the speculation that they would contribute to

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Intertrochanteric hip fractures in elderly patients are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, with increasing incidence due to the aging population. Despite advancements in intramedullary nailing (IMN) technology, fixation failure remains a concern. This study aims to evaluate pre-and postoperative radiographic risk factors for varus collapse in geriatric intertrochanteric fractures treated with twin interlocking derotation and compression screw cephalomedullary nail (InterTAN, Smith & Nephew).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study included patients ov

OBJECTIVES: Clinically, it is very difficult to prevent pathological fracture caused by high recurrence rate of osteolytic disease of proximal femur in children. At present, there is no consensus in clinical studies of which internal fixation method can significantly reduce the probability of recurrence of pathological fracture. The study aims to research the mechanical properties of different internal fixations in the treatment of osteolytic lesions of proximal femur in children by finite element analysis, and to find out the optimal treatment.
METHODS: Based on finite element analysis, the

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary nailing (IMN) is considered the gold standard surgical technique for the management of femoral shaft fractures. Nonunion is characterized by the absence of complete healing within nine months post-injury or the lack of any radiographic evidence of callus formation within three months. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of postoperative fracture interval and translation and other factors on bone union in femoral shaft fractures treated with IMN.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 87 patients with femoral shaft fractures who underwent IMN surgery in our cl

A prospective study of 25 patients with supracondylar and intercondylar fracture of the femur was carried out from January 1999 to June 2003 at SSG Hospital, Baroda, India. Twenty-eight percent fractures were open and 72% were closed. Twelve pecent of the fractures had intraarticular extension. AO classification was used to classify the fractures. Eighty-four percent of the fractures were due to high velocity trauma. All the cases were operated by percutaneous supracondylar nailing. No postoperative complication related to fracture treatment was seen. Average follow up was 20.1 months (range 6

PURPOSE: Anatomically preshaped implants are needed for exact restoration of the anatomy after fractures of the proximal ulna and ulnar shaft, which enables a good functional outcome. Aim of this computed tomographic analysis was to identify specific characteristics of the ulna. The data serve for the development of a new intramedullary implant for stabilisation of proximal and diaphyseal ulna fractures.
METHODS: With a standardized research method 100 CT scans of the ulna were evaluated regarding anatomic parameters like width of the medullary canal, proximal ulna dorsal angulation and varus

UNLABELLED: In emerging countries, nonunion in the shaft of fractured long bones is common.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a 3-year long prospective study, 50 patients (38 men, 12 women) with an average age of 40.9 years (range 17-60) were treated for neglected diaphyseal nonunion an average of 11 months (range 6-48) after the fracture event. The femur was involved 14 times, tibia 22 times, humerus eight times and forearm bones six times. All of these patients had consulted initially with a traditional bone setter at the time of fracture. The surgical procedure consisted of osteoperiosteal decortic

Débridement of the wound and immediate reamed nailing were performed on sixty-seven patients who had an open fracture of the femoral diaphysis. Forty-two of these patients were followed for a minimum of twelve months (average, twenty-three months). Using the classification system of Gustilo and Anderson, there were fifteen (36 per cent) Grade-I, nineteen (45 per cent) Grade-II, and eight (19 per cent) Grade-III soft-tissue injuries. All of the fractures healed within four months after injury. The average flexion of the knee was 127 degrees and that of the hip, 129 degrees. At least 90 degrees

Soft-tissue reconstruction around the popliteal fossa is challenging, particularly when traditional local flap options are unavailable due to trauma or anatomic constraints. We report the case of an 81-year-old woman who sustained Gustilo-Anderson type IIIB distal femoral and tibial plateau fractures with knee dislocation and soft-tissue degloving. Following initial management with a knee-spanning external fixation and a lateral gastrocnemius flap, she developed a pressure wound over the lateral femoral condyle. She underwent knee arthrodesis with a joint-spanning intramedullary nail and soft-

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Atypical femur fractures (AFFs) caused by long-term bisphosphonate use are associated with high rates of delayed healing and nonunion.
CASE REPORT: A 64-year-old woman with osteopenia on alendronate for 15 years sustained a displaced left AFF following a fall from standing height. Imaging showed an acute displaced transverse diaphyseal left femur fracture with lateral cortical thickening and beaking. She underwent an open reduction and internal fixation with insertion of a cephalomedullary nail placed in compression mode, utilizing a novel technique involving intraoperat

An entrapment of the femoral artery by cerclage wiring is a rare complication after spiral diaphyseal femoral fractures. We report the case of an 82-year-old female treated by an antegrade intramedullary nailing and multiple cable augmentation, which was then complicated by injury to the femoral artery that resulted in ipsilateral leg necrosis and amputation. The entrapment was caused by direct belting by the cable and resulted in a total obstruction of the femoral artery.
