Treatment of a cracked tooth with a resin-ionomer restoration and a connective tissue graft: a case report.

Treatment of a cracked tooth can be difficult and unpredictable. Quite often, the most predictable treatment possible is simply extraction. This is a case report of the treatment of a cracked tooth with a resin-ionomer restoration and a connective tissue with partial-thickness double pedicle graft. The crack was detected during a routine root coverage procedure using this type of graft. A resin-ionomer was used to repair the crack. Then, the root coverage procedure was completed. Complete root coverage was obtained, including the portion of the root that was repaired. The results remained stab

The oral effects of smokeless tobacco.

Smokeless tobacco use has increased rapidly in North America. This form of tobacco use has many oral effects including leukoplakia, oral cancer, loss of periodontal support (recession), and staining of teeth and composite restorations. Systemic effects such as nicotine dependence, transient hypertension and cardiovascular disease may also result from smokeless tobacco use. This paper aims to guide dental practitioners in identifying oral lesions that occur due to the use of smokeless tobacco and also offer guidelines on how to counsel patients who express a desire to stop using smokeless tobac

Latex elastic-induced periodontal damage: a case report on the subsequent orthodontic management.

Proper management of a malocclusion relies on a basic understanding of the development of the dentition and the craniofacial complex. Diagnosis should only be formulated after all the relevant diagnostic records, including clinical examination and history, are reviewed. Armed with this information, the dentist forms the treatment plan. The mere occurrence of a malocclusion does not constitute a need for treatment. Injudicious intervention can be counterproductive or destructive. Through a case report, the deleterious effects of improper case management and questionable treatment mechanics are

The histology of new attachment utilizing a thick autogenous soft tissue graft in an area of deep recession: a case report.

An area of deep, long-standing recession on a mandibular first premolar was treated for root coverage in a 40-year-old woman. The recession was 6.0 mm deep with a probing depth of 2.0 mm, and there was no attached gingiva. A thick (1.5-mm) free autogenous epithelium and connective tissue graft from the palate was placed to the cementoenamel junction of the tooth after instrumentation and tetracycline conditioning of the root surface. The tooth and facial soft tissues were removed in block section 10.5 months later. At the time of extraction, there had been a gain of 5.0 mm of root coverage, an

Recurrence of destructive periodontal disease after treatment. A long term study.

This study demonstrates the difficulties which arise in statistical analysis derived from data of observations in post-treatment healing and recurrence of periodontal disease. Ten individuals received an initial phase of treatment followed by surgical pocket elimination utilizing replaced flap surgery. Clinical measurements of recession and pocketing were taken pre-operatively and 6 monthly thereafter for a period of four years after treatment. The results have shown that surgical treatment is least benefit in cases of mild pocketing, and of most benefit in cases of severe pocketing. A tendenc

Inter-generational continuity in periodontal health: findings from the Dunedin family history study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether parental periodontal disease history is a risk factor for periodontal disease in adult offspring. METHODS: Proband periodontal examination [combined attachment loss (CAL) at age 32, and incidence of CAL from ages 26 to 32] and interview data were collected during the age-32 assessments in the Dunedin Study. Parental data were also collected. The sample was divided into two familial-risk groups for periodontal disease (high- and low-risk) based on parents' self-reported periodontal disease. RESULTS: Periodontal risk analysis involved 625 proband-parent(s) group

Periodontal findings in elderly patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.

The periodontal status of 25 patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) (age range 58 to 76) was investigated and compared with 40 non-diabetic control subjects (age range 59 to 77). Surfaces with visible plaque and bleeding after probing, calculus, recessions, and pathological pockets were examined. The total attachment loss was calculated as a sum of recessions and pockets in millimeters. Mesial and distal bone loss was measured from panoramic radiographs and mean alveolar bone loss was calculated. Periodontal disease was considered advanced when mean alveolar bone loss wa
