To study a correlation between anxiety and delirium, 50 schizophrenic patients with the anxiety-delirious syndrome were treated with anxiolytics (leponex and phenazepam). In 31 patients with paroxysm-like progressive and 19 with continuously progressive paranoid schizophrenia the authors examined the results of long-term (from 4 to 11 years) treatment with moditen depot. Evoked potentials (EPs) were studied in patients with endogenic depression prior to and during the therapy. It was found that a reduction in the maximum amplitude of EPs reflecting the initial severity of depression could not serve as an indicator of its time-course in the treatment by tricyclic antidepressants. In contrast, the newly identified electrophysiological sign of endogenic depression, a number of EP waves, shifted toward normalization in the process of the treatment parallelled by a decrease in the severity of the depressive syndrome.

The authors examined 75 mothers suffering from alcoholism with regard to risk factors for their progeny. When children had psychological pathology, the mothers' alcoholism was distinguished by greater severity of biological manifestations and relatively easier social sequelae. The author has analyzed the results of the therapy of 200 epileptic patients and outlined the main causes of its low effectiveness: a high rate of the development and dissemination of foci of epileptic activity, a limited array of drugs for controlling non convulsive paroxysms of a complex structure, a decrease in the tolerance of large doses of drugs and intercurrent diseases. A study involving 36 epileptic patients and 8 control subjects was devoted to the optimization of antiepileptic drug therapy with the help of determining the blood levels of anticonvulsants (benzonal, phenobarbital). The daily dose of an anticonvulsant directly correlated with its blood levels. Blood levels of benzonal increased upon the additional administration to patients of hexamidine or hexamidine and diphenylhydantoin mixtures. A reduction in the daily dose of benzonal by 2/3 was attended by a 50% decline in its blood levels.

An anatomo-surgical classification of arteriovenous malformations of the posterior cranial fossa (PCF) is suggested, based on angiography and computer-aided tomography findings with due consideration for adequate surgical approaches to the defect. Conditions of blood supply and drainage are described with regard to localization of the malformation in the PCF structures. Analysis of the neurologic symptoms in PCF arteriovenous malformations permitted a conclusion on a comparatively rare correlation between the symptoms and the localization of the malformation in a certain PCF structure.

The article deals with a serious complication of antiepileptic treatment, namely, an increase in the frequency of epileptic attacks as a result of drug overdosage. The author considers the causes of this phenomenon. The most common of these causes include malpractice of the dosage build-up in the absence of the clinical effect, polytherapy--not infrequently with drugs of the same chemical group, and insufficient attention to the potentiating drug interaction. The article describes a rare clinical case where a patient with right-side spastic torticollis developed stable left-side spastic torticollis following discontinuation of nacom. On the basis of clinico-physiological analysis of the given phenomenon and having compared their findings with the literature data the authors substantiate the involvement of the nigrostriatal systems of both hemispheres in the pathogenesis of torticollis and in the mechanisms of rotation inversion reported in the given disease for the first time.

Forty patients with vertebrogenic painful syndromes related to radicular, muscular-tonic and neuro-dystrophic damage to the peripheral nervous system were examined for somatosensory evoked potentials of the projection zone of the cortex. Patients with neurological syndromes of lumbar osteochondrosis were subjected to clinico-electromyographic examination to study whether it is possible to regulate the function of spinal alpha-motoneurons by decimetric waves (DMW). The effect of DMW on the excitability of alpha-motoneurons was found to depend on their initial function. The neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the therapeutic action of DMW in this pathology are analyzed.
