Probing the Impact of Inner Retinal Network Changes on Subretinal Electrical Stimulation Responses.

We investigated the influence of degenerated retinal networks on the efficacy of subretinal prosthetic devices in eliciting retinal neural responses. We present a computational model that incorporates intricate descriptions of retinal connectivity spanning neural layers, conductance-based cellular and synaptic parameters, and analytical formulas governing the electrical field. Our results suggest the possibility of selective modulation of functionally-distinct retinal pathways through subretinal stimulation, even in the absence of all photoreceptors. However, we observed a decreasing level of

An EEG correlation framework to study state anxiety and learning under uncertainty.

Objective.Recent developments in computational neuroscience have shed light on the neural processes underlying altered decision-making under uncertainty in anxiety. These disruptions are partly attributed to impaired encoding of precision-weighted prediction errors (pwPEs), which guide belief updating during learning and decision-making, as described by hierarchical Bayesian models. In this paper, we introduce a gamified paradigm for collecting decision-making data, together with a framework for extracting EEG features linked to computationally relevant variables, drawing on principles from ne

Dynamical network models predict spectral response to single-pulse electrical stimulation.

Objective.Drug-resistant epilepsy can be treated by surgically removing the seizure onset zone (SOZ), but localizing this zone is challenging because no clinically accepted biomarker of the SOZ exists. A novel computational biomarker, neural resonance, utilizes control theory to model the brain's response to stimulation. However, model validation is limited, and it is necessary to further contextualize the relationship between the model's prediction and the brain's true response to stimulation.Approach.Single-pulse electrical stimulation (SPES) provides an opportunity to bridge this gap as Bod

Identifying melanoma among benign simulators - Is there a role for deep learning convolutional neural networks? (MelSim Study).

IMPORTANCE: Early detection of cutaneous melanoma (CM) is crucial for patient survival, yet avoiding overdiagnosis remains essential. Differentiating CM from benign melanoma simulators (MelSim) is challenging due to overlapping features. Deep learning convolutional neural networks (DL-CNNs) have demonstrated dermatologist-level accuracy in identifying CM. We hypothesized that support from DL-CNN could increase dermatologists' accuracy in differentiating CM from MelSim. METHODS: This cross-sectional reader study analyzed the diagnostic performance of a DL-CNN and 27 dermatologists for 200 skin

Repetition of Computer Security Warnings Results in Differential Repetition Suppression Effects as Revealed With Functional MRI.

Computer users are often the last line of defense in computer security. However, with repeated exposures to system messages and computer security warnings, neural and behavioral responses show evidence of habituation. Habituation has been demonstrated at a neural level as repetition suppression where responses are attenuated with subsequent repetitions. In the brain, repetition suppression to visual stimuli has been demonstrated in multiple cortical areas, including the occipital lobe and medial temporal lobe. Prior research into the repetition suppression effect has generally focused on a sin

"Leaky" and "Unstable" Neural Integrator Can Coexist-Paradox Observed in Multiple Sclerosis.

The mechanism for stable gaze-holding requires a neural integrator that converts pulse of neural discharge to steady firing rate. The integrator is feedback-dependent, impaired feedback manifests as either "unstable" integration when it is too much or "leaky" when it is too little. The "unstable" integrator is known to cause sinusoidal oscillations of the eyes called pendular nystagmus, whereas the "leaky" integrator causes jerky eye oscillations called gaze-evoked nystagmus. We hypothesized that integrator can be simultaneously leaky and unstable. Mechanistically, some parts of network are se

Altered Dynamic Brain Functional Network Connectivity Related to Visual Network in Spinal Cord Injury.

Visual feedback training (VFT) plays an important role in the motor rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). However, the neural mechanisms are unclear. We aimed to investigate the changes in dynamic functional network connectivity (FNC) related to visual networks (VN) in patients with SCI and to reveal the neural mechanism of VFT promoting motor function rehabilitation. Dynamic FNC and the sliding window method were performed in 18 complete SCI (CSCI), 16 patients with incomplete SCI (ISCI), and 42 healthy controls (HCs). Then, k-mean clustering was implemented to identify di

The role of dataset integrity, calibration and signal quality in neural network-based blood pressure estimation.

Cuffless blood pressure (BP) estimation via photoplethysmography (PPG) and machine learning has been widely studied, yet reported accuracy remains below clinically acceptable levels, limiting adoption in sport, ambient living, and telemedicine. This study systematically examines potential error sources underlying these performance gaps, with emphasis on: dataset selection, signal synchronization, subject-specific calibration, and data leakage. Three neural networks-a multilayer perceptron (MLP_BP), residual network (Res_BP), and temporal convolutional network (TCN_BP)-were evaluated on two cur

Fiber dispersion in the right ventricle: A comparison of constitutive neural network predictions with experimental data.

The mechanical behavior of right ventricular (RV) myocardium is governed by its anisotropic microstructure, yet constitutive models that account for fiber dispersion and enable reliable parameter identification remain limited. In this study, we propose a physics-embedded constitutive neural network framework for automated discovery of strain energy functions and microstructural parameters from experimental data. The model is formulated within an incompressible, orthotropic hyperelastic setting using invariant-based representations. Fiber, sheet, and normal directions are incorporated through a

Maximizing pancreatic carcinoma classification performance using parrot optimized vision transformer.

Pancreatic cancer is a rare kind of cancer that is detected during the final stages. This is because the symptoms are very common and also do not show up in the starting phase. Hence an automated system for identification and classification of pancreatic cancer becomes essential. This becomes possible with the help of artificial intelligence and machine learning. The aim of this research is to develop a model that classifies pancreatic cancer using Pancreatic CT image dataset involving 1411 images from Kaggle website. The input images are augmented for increasing the dataset quality and prepro

A Latent Variable Approach for Causal Effect Estimation Under Misclassified Treatment Assignment.

Misclassification in treatment assignment is a common issue in causal inference with observational studies, often leading to biased estimates of causal effects if unaddressed. Several methods have been developed to handle this issue by making use of a validation dataset. This paper proposes a robust latent variable approach for causal effect estimation without the need of validation data. By employing a potential outcome modeling framework that incorporates true treatment assignment as a latent variable, we construct a likelihood function that involves three models: the outcome model, the meas

AI-Based QRS Onset Detection in the Early Ventricular Activation Site ECGs.

Identifying the onset of the QRS complex is an important step for localizing the site of origin (SOO) of premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) and the exit site of Ventricular Tachycardia (VT). However, identifying the QRS onset is challenging due to signal noise, baseline wander, motion artifact, and muscle artifact. Furthermore, in VT, QRS onset detection is especially difficult due to the overlap with repolarization from the prior beat. In this study, 7706 captured bipolar pacing beats (Stim-QRS < 40 ms) pooled from 384 anatomically widely dispersed pacing sites of 15 patients were used fo

Submanifold sparse convolutional networks for automated 3D segmentation of kidneys and kidney tumours in computed tomography.

Accurate delineation of kidney tumours in Computed Tomography (CT) is essential for downstream quantitative analysis and precision oncology that could enable personalised treatments, but manual segmentation is a specialised task, time-consuming and difficult to scale in routine practice. Automated 3D segmentation remains challenging in medical imaging, where images are large and dense volumes of data, making high-resolution processing with conventional dense convolutional neural networks computationally expensive, and often reliant on downsampling or patch-based inference. To overcome this pro

A deep unrolling network based on cartoon texture decomposition for low-dose CT reconstruction.

Objective.Deep unrolling network, as a promising deep learning approach for low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) reconstruction, can efficiently address the issues of severe noise and artifacts in LDCT imaging. However, most existing methods predominantly unrolled the fidelity term to convolutional neural networks (CNNs) while failing to unroll regularization terms, which inevitably limits the feature capture capability of the network. To further improve the performance of deep unrolling networks, this paper proposed the CTDNet, a cartoon texture decomposition-based deep unrolling network that
