This case report describes the treatment of a patient with a Class II Division 1 subdivision right malocclusion with 8 congenitally missing teeth, incompetent lips, and incisor protrusion. The treatment plan included extractions and space closure with retraction of the anterior teeth; symmetric mechanics were used in the mandibular arch and asymmetric mechanics in the maxillary arch. Because of the mechanics used, some midline deviations were expected. Knowledge of diagnosis and treatment planning of asymmetric malocclusions and dental esthetics are essential for success when correcting asymme

The increasing demand for esthetic orthodontic treatment has led to the development of tooth-colored and even "invisible" appliances. Although sequential removable clear aligners have several advantages over conventional bracket systems, they have some limitations in extraction treatment. This case report presents the esthetic extraction treatment of a patient with bialveolar protrusion; conventional brackets were not used. The treatment was completed in 2 steps. The first step involved segmental retraction of the anterior teeth by using miniscrews and an anterior lingual splint with a clear l

In this article, we report the successful treatment of a patient, aged 19 years 11 months, who had a severe Class II malocclusion and facial asymmetry. A combination of intraoral vertical-sagittal ramus osteotomy (IVSRO), intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO), and LeFort I osteotomy was used for mandibular advancement and maxillary impaction. The patient had a convex profile because of a retrognathic mandible. She also had severe mandibular deviation and vertical maxillary excess with a canted occlusal plane. A deep overbite of 8.0 mm and an excessive overjet of 10.0 mm were observed. Afte

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to investigate the change of lip-line cant (LLC) after 1-jaw orthognathic surgery in mandibular asymmetry patients.
METHODS: Preoperative and postoperative data of 22 patients having 1-jaw orthognathic surgery, with menton deviation over 2 degrees before the surgery, were our subjects. LLC was measured in the preoperative and postoperative frontal photographs, and its change was correlated with various craniofacial measurements obtained from preoperative and postoperative frontal cephalograms and maxillofacial 3-dimensional computed tomography image

INTRODUCTION: This study was designed to evaluate patterns of stress generation in the temporomandibular joint after mandibular protraction, by using a 3-dimensional finite element method. The results of the initial investigation are reported here in Part 1. The effects of varying the construction bite are reported in Part 2.
METHODS: A 3-dimensional computer-aided design model was developed from the magnetic resonance images of a growing boy (age, 12 years), by using I-DEAS NX (version 11.0, Siemens PLM Software, Plano, Tex). The model simulated mandibular protraction, with 5 mm of sagittal

INTRODUCTION: Traditionally, cephalograms have been used to evaluate a patient's maxillofacial skeleton and facial soft-tissue morphology. However, magnification and distortion of the cephalograms make detailed morphologic analysis difficult in patients with complex deformities. The purpose of this article was to introduce a new method for visualizing deformation and deviation of the maxillofacial skeleton and facial soft tissues.
METHODS: Standard 3-dimensional Japanese head models were sized to match the sella-to-nasion distance obtained from 2 patients' (1 man, 1 woman) maxillofacial skele

INTRODUCTION: Traditional cephalometric radiographs can analyze facial soft-tissues 2 dimensionally. Because they cannot provide information about the nose, lips, cheeks, and mouth, another method is needed to analyze these soft tissues. We introduce a new method for analyzing the 3-dimensional (3D) shape and size of facial soft-tissue morphology.
METHODS: A 3D average face model was constructed based on 3D computed tomography images of Japanese male and female adult volunteers who had well-balanced faces and normal occlusions. To test the feasibility of evaluating the quantitative effects of

INTRODUCTION: Functional occlusion has received little attention in short- and long-term evaluations of orthodontic treatment results. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the long-term changes in functional occlusion during the postorthodontic retention period.
METHODS: One hundred fifteen consecutive patients treated with multibracket appliances were examined twice: directly after appliance removal (T1) and after an average retention period of 24 months (T2). The clinical examination comprised the assessment of anteroposterior and lateral interferences (slides) between the retru

INTRODUCTION: Our aims in this study were to determine the anteroposterior facial relationship that is regarded as most attractive by Japanese laypersons in a questionnaire survey and to evaluate which analysis of the soft-tissue profile is most suitable for Japanese people.
METHODS: We showed 262 Japanese laypersons (121 male, 141 female) 9 morphed profile images with Point B and menton anteriorly or distally moved by software and asked them to number them sequentially according to their attractiveness. To examine which analysis best reflects facial attractiveness as judged by laypersons, we

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to analyze craniofacial profiles and head posture in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) subgrouped according to cervical column morphology.
METHODS: Seventy-four white men aged 27 to 65 years (mean, 49.0 years) diagnosed with OSA in sleep studies by using overnight polysomnography were included. Only patients with apnea-hypopnea index scores between 5.1 and 92.7 (mean, 36.4) were included. Lateral profile radiographs in standardized head posture were taken, and cephalometric analyses of sagittal and vertical jaw relationships were made. The pat

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc displacement (DD) is a common finding in preorthodontic adolescents. The natural progression of this disorder has not been described with magnetic resonance imaging.
METHODS: The TMJs of a longitudinal sample of 94 preorthodontic adolescents were evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging to quantify sagittal disc position (SDP). The average time between imaging visits (V1 and V2) was 3.7 years (range, 1-6 years). Boys and girls had significantly different SDP values at V1, and therefore changes in SDP from V1 to V2 were analyzed separately for

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to examine longitudinally the development of specific occlusal traits and space conditions in an Icelandic sample.
METHODS: The sample comprised 245 adolescents examined clinically in the late mixed or permanent dentition and again 25 years later. All subjects were orthodontically untreated, and all had the full complement of teeth at both examinations.
RESULTS: A significant increase in the prevalence of mandibular anterior crowding and mesial molar relationships and a decrease in the prevalence of excessive overjet and maxillary anterior spacing

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate possible characteristic features and dental anomalies that accompany tooth transposition.
METHODS: Several electronic databases were searched. Hand searching was also performed to identify potentially relevant studies. Initially, 409 articles were retrieved (399 by electronic searching, 10 by hand searching). After applying specific exclusion criteria, 5 studies were eligible for this meta-analysis. Meta-analysis was performed by determining the marginal mean proportions and the 95% confidence intervals estimated by the random-effect mode

INTRODUCTION: This study involved the assessment of pretreatment and posttreatment lateral cephalograms from late mixed-dentition patients with Class II Division 1 and Division 2 malocclusions with mild mandibular crowding. All were selected before treatment began.

The study was designed specifically to determine whether anteroposterior mandibular dentoalveolar and skeletal changes associated with reduction of deep incisal overbites, by using a particular late mixed-dentition treatment approach, a
