Maxillary Jaw-in-a-Day: The Role of Point-of-Care Manufacturing and Implant Stability Quotient in Centrofacial Chondrosarcoma.

Chondrosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor of epithelial origin, with fewer than 0.1% of cases affecting the nasal septum. Maxillofacial oncological surgery presents significant challenges, particularly in maxillary reconstruction, often requiring complex rehabilitation. This case report describes the use of point-of-care manufacturing, customized cutting guides, and 3D printing technology for fibular-free flap reconstruction and guided dental implant placement in a 42-year-old male with centrofacial nasal chondrosarcoma. After a bilateral maxillectomy, continuity across the maxillomalar buttres

A stiff bioink for hybrid bioprinting of vascularized bone tissue with enhanced mechanical properties.

3D bioprinting is an emerging technique in tissue engineering that is advantageous for fabricating intricate tissues. However, challenges arise in bioprinting functional, implantable tissues. Commonly utilized hydrogel bioinks, while offering desirable printability and a cell-friendly environment, often lack the mechanical robustness necessary for post-printing maturation, handling, and implantation. These limitations are particularly relevant for bone tissue. Treatment of bone loss resulting from trauma or infection poses a significant clinical challenge. While surgical interventions exist, t

Antimicrobial 3D printed implants for periprosthetic joint infections.

Periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) remain a serious complication following hip and knee arthroplasty, affecting 1-5% of patients in developed countries and posing significant challenges to patients, clinicians, and healthcare systems. Conventional prophylactic strategies, such as antibiotic-loaded bone cement, suffer from limited post-implantation drug release and potential compromise of mechanical integrity. To overcome these limitations, we developed a personalized, 3D-printed implant designed to integrate with the acetabular component of joint prostheses. These implants deliver either m

3D printed rectal swabs for assessing the gut microbiome, metabolome and inflammation.

Investigating the gut microbiome and metabolome frequently requires faecal samples, which can be difficult to obtain. Previous studies have shown that rectal swabs are comparable to faecal samples for analysing gut microbiota composition and key metabolites. In this study, 3D printed rectal swabs were compared with conventional flocked swabs and faecal samples, due to the potential advantages 3D printing as a technique offers for swab production and development. 16S rRNA gene sequencing, qPCR and metabolite profiling (using 1H-NMR spectroscopy) were performed on swab and faecal samples from he

Pipette-operable microfluidic devices with hydrophobic valves in sequential dispensing with various liquid samples: multiplex disease assay by RT-LAMP.

Microfluidic dispensing technologies often require additional equipment, posing challenges for their integration into point-of-care testing (POCT) applications. In response to this challenge, we have developed a pipette-operable microfluidic device fabricated using 3D printing technology for precise liquid dispensing. This device features three reaction chambers and three distinct hydrophobic valves to control the flow direction of liquids. Through these valves, the pipette-operable microfluidic device can sequentially dispense and isolate the liquid into the three reaction chambers, allowing

Development of a 3D-printed phantom for total skin electron therapy dose assessment.

PURPOSE: Total skin electron therapy (TSET) is a complex radiotherapy technique, posing challenges in commissioning and quality assurance (QA), especially due to significant variability in patient body shapes. Previous studies have correlated dose with factors such as obesity index, height, and gender. However, current treatment planning systems cannot simulate TSET plans, necessitating heavy reliance on QA methods using standardized anthropomorphic phantoms and in-vivo dosimetry. Given the relatively few studies on rotational techniques, comprehensive data in commissioning could streamline th

Office-Based Digital Workflow for Managing Old Mandibular Fracture Malunion: Use of Short-Segment Drilling and Osteotomy Guides With Predictive Holes.

Treating old mandibular fractures with malunion is challenging due to the need for osteotomy and interference between bone segments, complicating occlusal restoration. This technical note introduces a novel office-based digital workflow utilizing surgical guides. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) data were imported into MIMICS software for virtual surgical planning to precisely realign bone fragments based on anatomical and occlusal relationships. A pre-bent reconstruction plate was adapted to a 3-dimensional-printed mandible model, and cone beam CT scans captured detailed screw path data.

3D printed dispersible efavirenz tablets: A strategy for nasogastric administration in children.

Enteral feeding tubes (EFTs) can be placed in children diagnosed with HIV which need nutritional support due to malnutrition. EFTs are the main route for medication administration in these patients, bringing up concerns about off label use of medicines, dose inaccuracy and tube clogging. Here we report for the first time the use of selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printing to develop efavirenz (EFZ) dispersible printlets for patients with HIV that require EFT administration. Water soluble polymers Parteck® MXP and Kollidon® VA64 were used to obtain both 500 mg (P500 and K500) and 1000 mg pri

3D printing injectable microbeads using a composite liposomal ink for local treatment of peritoneal diseases.

The peritoneal cavity offers an attractive administration route for challenging-to-treat diseases, such as peritoneal carcinomatosis, post-surgical adhesions, and peritoneal fibrosis. Achieving a uniform and prolonged drug distribution throughout the entire peritoneal space, though, is difficult due to high clearance rates, among others. To address such an unmet clinical need, alternative drug delivery approaches providing sustained drug release, reduced clearance rates, and a patient-centric strategy are required. Here, we describe the development of a 3D-printed composite platform for the su

Horseradish Peroxidase-Mediated Bioprinting via Bioink Gelation by Alternately Extruded Support Material.

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-mediated extrusion bioprinting has a significant potential in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. However, they often face challenges in terms of printing fidelity and structural integrity when using low-viscosity inks. To address this issue, a method that alternately extrudes bioinks and support material was developed in this study. The bioinks consisting of cells, HRP, and phenolated polymers, and the support material contained hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The support material not only prevented the collapse of the constructs but also supplied H2O2 to faci

Microenvironmentally optimized 3D-printed TGFβ-functionalized scaffolds facilitate endogenous cartilage regeneration in sheep.

Clinically, microfracture is the most commonly applied surgical technique for cartilage defects. However, an increasing number of studies have shown that the clinical improvement remains questionable, and the reason remains unclear. Notably, recent discoveries revealed that signals from regenerated niches play a critical role in determining mesenchymal stem cell fate specification and differentiation. We speculate that a microenvironmentally optimized scaffold that directs mesenchymal stem cell fate will be a good therapeutic strategy for cartilage repair. Therefore, we first explored the defi

Engineering Single-Atomic Iron-Catalyst-Integrated 3D-Printed Bioscaffolds for Osteosarcoma Destruction with Antibacterial and Bone Defect Regeneration Bioactivity.

Effective antitumor therapeutics with distinctive bactericidal and osteogenic properties are in high demand for comprehensive osteosarcoma treatment. Here, a "scaffold engineering" strategy that integrates highly active single-atomic iron catalysts (FeSAC) into a 3D printed bioactive glass (BG) scaffold is reported. Based on the atomically dispersed iron species within the catalysts, the engineered FeSAC displays prominent Fenton catalytic activity to generate toxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH) in response to the microenvironment specific to osteosarcoma. In addition, the constructed FeSAC-BG scaff
