BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis is an uncommonly encountered zoonotic disease caused by the taeniid Echinococcus. The only endemic species in Australia, Echinococcus granulosus, forms cysts in the liver in 70% of cases. The aim of this study was to review the literature to provide an evidence-based narrative update on the diagnosis and management of hepatic cystic echinococcosis in Australia.
METHODS: We reviewed the literature, utilizing multiple research databases and citation tracking. Original research and review articles examining the diagnosis and management of hydatid disease in adults, pub

The authors report a case of a 20-year-old woman who was diagnosed with pulmonary cystic echinococcosis. She was admitted to hospital with a 1-week history of unresolving cough, coloured sputum with occasional haemoptysis and fever despite oral antibiotics. Radiology revealed a cavitating right lower lobe lung abscess. After 4 weeks of treatment, follow-up radiology showed incomplete resolution. Bronchoscopy revealed a white, avascular cystic lesion in the right lower lobe and serology testing for Echinococcus granulosus was positive. Repeat imaging eventually confirmed the cystic lesion with

Community-based integrated vector control (IVC) using polystyrene beads (EPS) and pyrethroid impregnated curtains (PIC) as an adjunct to mass drug administration (MDA) was implemented for lymphatic filariasis elimination, in the filaria endemic villages of Tirukoilur, south India. In all the villages, MDA was carried out by the state health machinery, as part of the national filariasis elimination programme. Thirty-six difficult-to-control villages were grouped as, viz, MDA alone, MDA + EPS and MDA + EPS + PIC arms. Implementation and monitoring of IVC was carried out by the community. After 3

Spinal intramedullary cysticercosis is an uncommon clinical condition that may mimic an intramedullary tumour and can lead to irreversible neurological deficits if untreated. We report a case of a 35-year-old man who clinically presented as Brown-Sequard syndrome, having thoracic cord cysticercosis at T11 level. MRI of the spine revealed a well-defined round intramedullary inflammatory lesion with scolex and perilesional oedema at D11 level.

As the liver and the lungs are the most common sites for hydatid cysts, a primary mediastinal involvement is quite rare. The symptoms related to primary mediastinal hydatid cysts usually depend on the size, location and compression to nearby structures. Presenting a 51-year-old male patient with the symptoms of Horner's Syndrome, we draw attention to a rare complication of a giant primary mediastinal hydatid cyst and its challenging management.

Authors present the first laboratory and epidemiological results which reveal the circulation in a population of protozoan Blastocystis hominis and its implication in the determinations of some gastrointestinal troubles, with fever, diarrhea and constipation, intense intestinal meteorism, associated with abdominal pain and cramps. Out of the 3106 investigated patients, 9.7% presented B. hominis as a unique etiologic agent, with an increased prevalence in adults (74.3%) and women (65.3%). Blastocystis infection with clinical manifestations or its asymptomatic form is included among emergent dis

BACKGROUND: Post-cholecystectomy syndrome encompasses numerous biliary, pancreatic and other entities. Biliary ascariasis is a common cause of adult biliary disease in an endemic area. Post-cholecystectomy biliary ascariasis, a cause of post- cholecystectomy syndrome although not yet defined is frequently seen in this part of the world.
METHOD: Between Jan. 1990 and Jan. 2001, 104 cases of post-cholecystectomy biliary ascariasis were seen. Ultrasonography was found to be an excellent tool for diagnosing and monitoring of the worms inside the biliary tract. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancr

OBJECTIVE: Mass systematic screening for alveolar echinococcosis (AE) of the liver in the Haut Cantal endemic area.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Targeted population was composed of the members of the Mutualité Sociale Agricole of the area, from 16 to 65 years old. 2077 notifications were sent, corresponding to 20% of the population of this area, defined by a triangle between Egliseneuve d'Entraigues, Riom ès Montagne and Saint Flour. Two screening tests were performed: Elisa serology test and liver ultrasound examination.
RESULTS: Participation levels were relatively low-ultrasound: 18.92%, serolog

PURPOSE: To describe a case of microsporidia corneal infection in a HIV-negative patient who did not wear contact lenses.
METHOD: Case report and review of literature.
RESULTS: This is the first case report of a human immunodeficiency virus-negative individual, a non-contact lens wearer, with microsporidia infection.
CONCLUSION: Microsporidia keratoconjunctivitis may occur in healthy subjects with no antecedent contact lens wear.

Hydatid pulmonary embolism is an uncommon condition resulting from the rupture of a hydatid heart cyst or the opening of a visceral hydatid cyst (often in the liver) into the venous circulation. We report two cases of hydatid pulmonary embolism following rupture of a hydatic cyst in the right ventricle. One case progressed to chronic cor pulmonale. We examine the pathophysiological mechanisms as well as the clinical, therapeutic and evolutive aspects.

We describe 11 patients with massive brain infection with viable cysticerci, undetectable inflammatory reaction on CNS imaging, and an unexpectedly high (82%) prevalence of tapeworm infection. With the exception of two individuals with heavy parasite loads, patients had a relatively benign clinical course and tolerated the use of cysticidal drugs. This group of patients represents a particular presentation of neurocysticercosis, different from the previously described syndromes of cysticercotic encephalitis and disseminated systemic cysticercosis.

A control strategy against Fasciola hepatica infection based on selective treatment of non-lactating animals was evaluated in four Swedish dairy herds. The study was conducted over the course of two consecutive seasons in moderately to highly F. hepatica infected herds with robotic milking, where heifers and dry cows received an oral drench with albendazole (10 mg/kg) during three visits in January, February and March in both 2017 and 2018. This resulted in an anthelmintic coverage between 38 % and 58 % of the animals. Furthermore, on each visit, the infection status of all dewormed animals al…

The lethal disease alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is caused by the metacestode stage of the fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis. Current chemotherapeutical treatment of AE relies on albendazole and mebendazole, with the caveat that these compounds are not parasiticidal. Drugs have to be taken for a prolonged period of time, often life-long, which can cause adverse effects and reduces the patients' quality of life. In some individuals, benzimidazoles are inactive or cause toxicity, leading to treatment discontinuation. Alternatives to benzimidazoles are urgently needed. Over the recent years…

The prevalence of pancreatic cystic echinococcosis (PCE) in the world is low ranging between 0.2% and 0.6%. The diagnosis of PCE is easy whe … y. For body and/or tail of the pancreas, the tendency is toward radical surgery. Medical treatment (albendazole) should be prescribed 1 week before surgery and 2 months during postoperative period (level II evidence and grade C recommendation).
