The incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), defined as oxygen need at 36 weeks of postmenstrual age, is about 30% for infants with birth weights <1000 g. During the winter of 1986-1987, 64 children with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection were admitted to our hospital. The diagnosis was made by direct immunofluorescent antibody technique. The objective of this study was to determine the association of respiratory symptoms and medication use and exposure to various air pollutants, PM2.5 components, and source factors in a panel of asthmatic and nonasthmatic children in Santiago, Chile.
