Design of a portable urine glucose monitoring system for health care.

This paper describes the design of a monitoring system that can be used to measure urine glucose during daily life. It consists of a bio-chemical sensor, hardware with PIC microcontroller and control circuits, and signal analyzing part. To evaluate the performance, we compared the analyzed glucose levels of the developed system to a standard instrument, YSI glucose analyzer, based on regression analysis using standard glucose solutions mixed with urine. Also, standard deviation and coefficient of variation were computed. In conclusion, the developed system showed it could be used for the measu

Navigated Percutaneous Cervical Pedicle Screw Placement: The Impact of Surgical Experience and Feasibility.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical treatment of cervical instabilities using pedicle screws poses risks of nerve and vessel injury, particularly in percutaneous procedures due to limited visual feedback. Navigation can reduce screw misplacement, but data on its usability across different experience levels in percutaneous approaches remains limited. METHODS: Two surgeons performed navigated cervical pedicle screw placement on human specimens using two C-arm cone-beam computed tomography-based navigation systems (navigation system 1 [NAV1], navigation system 2). One surgeon was an experienced spine surgeon, a

Application of Ionic Liquids for the Determination of Lipophilicity Parameters Using TLC Method, and QSRR Analysis for the Antipsychotic Drugs.

BACKGROUND: Reversed-phase liquid chromatography may cause difficulties, especially in the case of basic drugs due to the strong silanophilic interactions in the partition mechanism. Recently, imidazolium-based ionic liquids additives appeared interesting and a convenient solution for suppressing the harmful effect of free residuals of silanol groups, allowing remodeling of the stationary/mobile-phase system, and thus improving the lipophilicity assessment process. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the retention behavior of basic antipsychotics using various RP-LC systems, and c

Automatic definition of the central-chest lymph-node stations.

PURPOSE: Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Central to the lung-cancer diagnosis and staging process is the assessment of the central-chest lymph nodes. This assessment requires two steps: (1) examination of the lymph-node stations and identification of diagnostically important nodes in a three-dimensional (3D) multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) chest scan; (2) tissue sampling of the identified nodes. We describe a computer-based system for automatically defining the central-chest lymph-node stations in a 3D MDCT chest scan. METHODS: Automated me

Risk factors for systemic embolism in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

The purpose of this study was to define the risk factors for systemic embolism in patients with recently diagnosed paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. We therefore studied 63 consecutive patients with symptomatic nonvalvular paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and performed a clinical and noninvasive cardiac, peripheral vascular, and neurologic evaluation that included two-dimensional echocardiography, 24-hour Holter monitoring, and computed tomographic brain scan. Patients with predisposing clinical conditions for systemic embolism (valvular heart or coronary artery disease) or paroxysmal atrial fibri

Diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis is a demyelinating central nervous system disorder that affects young, otherwise healthy people. Presenting symptoms can be variable; the complaints are often vague and suggestive of a functional disorder. Diagnosis is based mainly on the clinical triad of young age, involvement of two or more areas within the central nervous system, and history characterized by exacerbations and remissions. In selected cases, the diagnosis is aided by cerebrospinal fluid examination, evoked potentials and computed tomographic scanning.

Artificial Intelligence-Driven Precision Bisphosphonate Therapy in Osteoporosis: Mechanisms, Clinical Applications, Risks, and Future Directions.

Bisphosphonates remain the pharmacological standard of care for osteoporosis; however, their clinical efficacy is limited by significant diagnostic gaps, heterogeneous therapeutic responses, and persistent concerns regarding long-term safety, including medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and atypical femoral fractures (AFF). To address these limitations, a structured comprehensive search of the Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, and PubMed (January 2005-December 2025) was conducted to evaluate the intersection of bisphosphonate pharmacotherapy and computational medicine. Explainable Machine Learning for Early Assessment of COVID-19 Risk Prediction in Emergency Departments.

Between January and October of 2020, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus has infected more than 34 million persons in a worldwide pandemic leading to over one million deaths worldwide (data from the Johns Hopkins University). Since the virus begun to spread, emergency departments were busy with COVID-19 patients for whom a quick decision regarding in- or outpatient care was required. The virus can cause characteristic abnormalities in chest radiographs (CXR), but, due to the low sensitivity of CXR, additional variables and criteria are needed to accurately pr

Ophthalmic manifestations of systemic diseases--part 1: phakomatoses, hematologic malignancies, metastases, and histiocytosis.

The orbit can be secondarily involved in various systemic conditions. The ophthalmic involvement is often the first clue to the presence of an underlying systemic condition. The ophthalmic involvement in systemic diseases can be either ocular or extraocular. The extent of involvement can be well delineated by imaging modalities like computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. In the first part of the article, we provide an overview of systemic diseases affecting the orbit, briefly discuss the modalities for orbital imaging, and discuss the imaging appearances of ophthalmic involvement

Theoretical modeling of large molecular systems. Advances in the local self consistent field method for mixed quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations.

Molecular mechanics methods can efficiently compute the macroscopic properties of a large molecular system but cannot represent the electronic changes that occur during a chemical reaction or an electronic transition. Quantum mechanical methods can accurately simulate these processes, but they require considerably greater computational resources. Because electronic changes typically occur in a limited part of the system, such as the solute in a molecular solution or the substrate within the active site of enzymatic reactions, researchers can limit the quantum computation to this part of the sy

Radiographic Outcomes of Preoperative CT Scan-Derived Patient-Specific Total Ankle Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative computer navigation and patient-specific instrumentation have had promising results in total knee arthroplasty and in a previous cadaveric total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) study. Potential benefits of patient-specific guides include improved implant alignment and decreased surgical time. The purpose of this retrospective case series was to evaluate the accuracy, reproducibility, and limitations of TAA tibia and talar implant placement and radiographic alignment using preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan-derived instrumentation in a clinical setting. An investigation into factors influencing immersion in interactive virtual reality environments.

Two interactive virtual reality environments were used to identify factors that may affect, or be affected by, the degree of immersion in a virtual world. In particular, the level of stress in a "swimming with dolphins" simulation is measured, as is the degree of simulator sickness resulting form a virtual roller coaster. Analysis of the results indicates that a relationship between the degree of immersion and the following factors: excitement, comfort, quality and age. The following factors are found to depend on the degree of immersion: simulator sickness, control, excitement and desire to r

Real-scale 3D models of the scoliotic spine from biplanar radiography without calibration objects.

This paper presents a new method for modelling the spines of subjects and making accurate 3D measurements using standard radiologic systems without requiring calibration objects. The method makes use of the focal distance and statistical models for estimating the geometrical parameters of the system. A dataset of 32 subjects was used to assess this method. The results show small errors for the main clinical indices, such as an RMS error of 0.49° for the Cobb angle, 0.50° for kyphosis, 0.38° for lordosis, and 2.62mm for the spinal length. This method is the first to achieve this level of accura

[Reconstruction methods for 3D imaging and quantification of intracoronary ultrasound cross-sectional images using biplanar fluoroscopy. Initial experiences in vitro and in vivo].

In this investigation, we studied the feasibility of 3D-reconstruction from 2D cross-sectional intracoronary ultrasound images. A computer-aided, automated 3D-reconstruction was used to generate cylindrical and sagittal format of vessels in vitro (n = 9) and in vivo (n = 48). Ultrasound 2D-images were acquired with a 20 MHz mechanical intracoronary ultrasound catheter (Boston Scientific). A slow pullback (about 1 mm/s) of the catheter was performed during continuous recording of the ultrasound images. The recorded 2D-images were then fed to an image processing computer. Correction and scaling

HED-ID: a federated expert system for interpretable and resource-adaptive intrusion detection on edge devices.

The proliferation of edge computing in industrial and IoT networks necessitates expert systems that support accurate, interpretable, and resource-efficient intrusion detection under strict privacy and computational constraints. This paper presents HED-ID, a fully integrated federated expert system designed for real-time, edge-oriented anomaly detection. The system combines: (i) a stacked bidirectional GRU (BiGRU) architecture with hybrid temporal-spatial attention for sequential and feature-level anomaly modeling, (ii) a resource-adaptive Grey Wolf Optimizer (A-GWO) that modulates exploration-

Time-Synchronized MRI-Assessment of Respiratory Apparatus Subsystems-A Feasibility Study.

The thorax (TH), the thoracic diaphragm (TD), and the abdominal wall (AW) are three sub-systems of the respiratory apparatus whose displacement motion has been well studied with the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Another sub-system, which has however received less research attention with respect to breathing, is the pelvic floor (PF). In particular, there is no study that has investigated the displacement of all four sub-systems simultaneously. Addressing this issue, it was the purpose of this feasibility study to establish a data acquisition paradigm for time-synchronous quantitativ

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return associated with vascular anomalies of the aorta: multidetector computed tomography findings.

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) is a congenital anomaly that involves drainage of one to three pulmonary veins directly into the right heart or systemic venous system, creating a partial left-to-right shunt. This drainage is associated with cardiac abnormalities such as mitral stenosis and pulmonary stenosis, patent ductus arteriosus, and atrial septal defects. We report a case of PAPVR associated with vascular anomalies of the aorta by multidetector computed tomography in an adult female patient.

CT angiography of systemic to pulmonary venous shunt in superior vena cava obstruction.

Superior vena cava obstruction is associated with multiple venous collaterals. There is an unusual pathway involving pulmonary venous collaterals in which systemic veins drain directly into the left heart, resulting in a right-to-left shunt. We report here a rare case of systemic to pulmonary venous shunt on both hemithoraces in superior vena cava obstruction associated with Budd-Chiari syndrome due to coagulopathy which was diagnosed by multidetector computed tomography angiography.
