BACKGROUND/AIMS: The diagnosis of growth hormone (GH) deficiency (GHD) in infancy and early childhood is not straightforward. GH stimulation tests are unsafe and unreliable in infants, and normative data are lacking. This study aims to investigate whether brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may replace GH stimulation tests in the diagnosis of GHD in children younger than 4 years.
METHODS: We examined a retrospective cohort, with longitudinal follow-up, of 68 children consecutively diagnosed with GHD before the age of 4 years. The prevalence of hypothalamic-pituitary (HP) alterations at MRI

BACKGROUND: Extra-pituitary birth defect (EPBD) in children with congenital hypopituitarism is largely unknown.
OBJECTIVE: The study aims to evaluate the incidence and pattern of EPBD in children with congenital hypopituitarism and to evaluate whether it can serve as a clue to diagnose this condition.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of hospital record of patients of short stature due to various etiology from which patients with congenital hypopituitarism with age ≥18 years were recruited for the analysis. Clinical, hormonal, radiological and ocular electrophysiological studies w

Aarskog-Scott syndrome, also termed as faciogenital dysplasia, is an X-linked disorder consisting of short stature, craniofacial dysmorphism, shawl scrotum, cryptorchidism, and interdigital webbing. Cardiac and central nervous system abnormalities and behavioral disorders can also be detected. The gene responsible for the syndrome is called FGD1, located at Xp11.21. A 7-year-old boy was admitted to our hospital due to short stature. He was born to non-consanguineous parents after an uneventful term pregnancy. Orchiopexy for bilateral cryptorchidism was performed when he was 2 years old. At phy

Suboptimal growth hormone (GH) replacement therapy during childhood is a major cause of osteopenia in young adults with childhood-onset GH deficiency (CO-GHD). This is primarily attributed to reduced bone formation in childhood. It is currently not known whether GHD also has adverse effects on bone metabolism in adult life. To examine the impact of GHD on calcium and bone metabolism in adults, we evaluated 50 men with CO pituitary failure at a mean age of 28.2+/-4.5 years, i.e., 8.8+/-4.1 years after the discontinuation of previous GH treatment for short stature. Thirty-three patients had mult

Ultrasonography is of great importance for the prenatal diagnosis of fetal malformations and abnormalities. An early diagnosis in the second trimester is of great interest for an intrauterine or an extrauterine therapy planning (the choice of the time and mode of delivery). Defects of the neural tube including hydrocephalus, malformations of the extremities, the gastrointestinal tract, omphaloceles, the urogenital and cardiac system are described. Four cases of fetal malformations are presented: fetal myelomeningocele, hydrocephalus, bilateral hydronephrosis and lymphangioma with fetal ascites

Fibroblast growth factors play an important role in the control of ovarian folliculogenesis, but the complete repertoire of ovarian receptors which can transduce the fibroblast growth factor signals and their precise localization in the ovary have not yet been characterized. The most common form of inherited human dwarfism results from a point mutation in the transmembrane region of fibroblast growth factor receptor 3. A mouse model for achondroplasia was generated by introducing the human mutation (glycine 380-arginine) into the mouse fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (G374R) by a "knock-in…

OBJECTIVE: Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) in children results in short stature and impaired bone health. While daily growth hormone (GH) injections are effective, they are associated with adherence challenges. Somatrogon, a long-acting, recombinant human GH (rhGH), allows weekly administration, potentially improving treatment compliance.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included prepubertal children with GHD treated with weekly Somatrogon at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, Dubai. Diagnosis was based on clinical, biochemical, and radiological criteria, including height standard deviati

The role of growth hormone (GH) during childhood and adulthood is well established. Once final stature is reached, GH continues to act during the transition, the period between adolescence and adulthood in which most somatic and psychological development is obtained. The achievement of peak bone mass represents the most relevant aspect of GH action during the transition period; however, equally clear is its influence on body composition and metabolic profile and, probably, in the achievement of a complete gonadal and sexual maturation. Despite this, there are still some aspects that often make

KBG syndrome is a rare genetic disease characterized mainly by skeletal abnormalities, distinctive facial features, and intellectual disability. Heterozygous mutations in ANKRD11 gene, or deletion of 16q24.3 that includes ANKRD11 gene are the cause of KBG syndrome. We describe two patients presenting with short stature and partial facial features, whereas no intellectual disability or hearing loss was observed in them. Two ANKRD11 variants, c.4039_4041del (p. Lys1347del) and c.6427C > G (p. Leu2143Val), were identified in this study. Both of them were classified as variants of uncertain signif
