Human in vivo talocrural contributions to ankle joint complex kinematics during walking, running, and hopping.

The human ankle joint complex, consisting of calcaneus, talus, and tibia, is often simplified as a single functional ankle joint, neglecting the motion of the talus. Understanding the individual contributions of the talus and calcaneus is crucial for comprehending ankle joint complex function in healthy populations, and alterations in function that may exist in clinical conditions. To achieve accurate bone kinematics, high-resolution biplanar videoradiography was used with participants engaged in walking and running (n = 9) and hopping (n = 9) with no overlap in participants. The rotation axes

Orbital Foraminal Morphometrics in Nonsyndromic Unilateral Coronal Craniosynostosis.

Nonsyndromic unilateral coronal craniosynostosis (UCS) is a rare congenital disorder that results from premature fusion of either coronal suture. The result is growth restriction across the suture, between the ipsilateral frontal and parietal bones, leading to bony dysmorphogenesis affecting the calvarium, orbit, and skull base. Prior studies have reported associations between UCS and visual abnormalities. The present study utilizes a novel geometric morphometric analysis to compare dimensions of orbital foramina on synostotic versus nonsynostotic sides in patients with UCS. Computed tomograph

Prevalence and pattern of maxillofacial injuries and treatment outcome after bear attacks in Jharkhand population.

INTRODUCTION: Sloth bear, a native species of Indian subcontinent, has a population estimate of 1200-1500 in Jharkhand. Human habitats in proximity to forest reserve cause frequent human-bear interactions and thus bear attack injuries. Face is the most common site affected. This is a prospective study performed to evaluate the incidence and pattern of maxillofacial trauma after bear attack and the outcome of the treatment provided to them. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with bear attack injuries reporting to the outpatient department were recruited for the study. The incidence was recorded i

Surgical Trapping With Revascularization of Concomitant Cervical and Petrous Internal Carotid Artery Aneurysms: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

Petrous internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysms are rare, complicated lesions to treat. The management paradigms include observation, endovascular exclusion, or surgical trapping with or without revascularization. The case described in this video involved a 67-yr-old woman with a known history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, who presented after a mechanical ground-level fall. Clinically, she had a nasal deformity and resolving epistaxis consistent with mild facial trauma. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a comminuted nasal bone fracture and an incidental 3-cm right petrous ICA aneurysm. Subs

A 1810 skull of Napoleon army's soldier: a clinical-anatomical correlation of steam gun trauma.

INTRODUCTION: In the following article, we are presenting a clinical observation of Baron Larrey. In 1804, Larrey was the inspector general of health, as well as the chief surgeon of the imperial Napoleonic Guard. He participated in all of Napoleon's campaigns. A paleopathological study was performed on a skull from Dupuytren's Museum (Paris) with a long metal stick in the head. We report here a clinical case as well as the autopsy description of this soldier's skull following his death. We propose a different anatomical analysis of the skull, which allowed us to rectify what we believe to be

1-stage bilateral total hip arthroplasty operation in 22 patients with use of short and standard stem length on either side: gait analysis 1 and 2 years after bilateral THA.

BACKGROUND: According to previous gait analyses, insertion of a total hip arthroplasty (THA) will improve the range of hip flexion-extension but not to normal. Use of short stems could have a potential to improve the motion by preservation of more bone and muscular attachments. We evaluated whether a short femoral stem resulted in improved hip motion compared to a conventional stem in patients who underwent 1-stage bilateral THA. The most painful hip was randomised to either design and the 2nd hip was operated with the design not used on the 1st side. METHODS: Gait analysis was performed with

Mutations in SEC24D, encoding a component of the COPII machinery, cause a syndromic form of osteogenesis imperfecta.

As a result of a whole-exome sequencing study, we report three mutant alleles in SEC24D, a gene encoding a component of the COPII complex involved in protein export from the ER: the truncating mutation c.613C>T (p.Gln205(∗)) and the missense mutations c.3044C>T (p.Ser1015Phe, located in a cargo-binding pocket) and c.2933A>C (p.Gln978Pro, located in the gelsolin-like domain). Three individuals from two families affected by a similar skeletal phenotype were each compound heterozygous for two of these mutant alleles, with c.3044C>T being embedded in a 14 Mb founder haplotype shared by all three.

High dietary arachidonic acid levels affect the process of eye migration and head shape in pseudoalbino Senegalese sole Solea senegalensis early juveniles.

The effect of high dietary levels of arachidonic acid (ARA) on the eye migration and cranial bone remodelling processes in Senegalese sole Solea senegalensis early juveniles (age: 50 days post hatch) was evaluated by means of geometric morphometric analysis and alizarin red staining of cranial skeletal elements. The incidence of normally pigmented fish fed the control diet was 99·1 ± 0·3% (mean ± s.e.), whereas it was only 18·7 ± 7·5% for those fed high levels of ARA (ARA-H). The frequency of cranial deformities was significantly higher in fish fed ARA-H (95·1 ± 1·5%) than in those fed the con

Browpexy through the upper lid (BUL): a new technique of lifting the brow with a standard blepharoplasty incision.

BACKGROUND: Browpexy returns the brow to an anatomical, aesthetically-appealing location on the upper face. Recently, browlifting techniques have evolved from aggressive, open approaches toward less invasive, limited-incision techniques. Browpexy through the upper lid (BUL), an innovative technique based on earlier practices, anchors the underlying brow soft tissue to the bone, allowing for stabilization. Furthermore, this procedure can be performed concomitantly with an upper eyelid blepharoplasty through the same access incision. OBJECTIVE: The authors evaluate the efficacy of BUL in patien

Lateral transzygomatic approach to sphenoid wing meningiomas.

BACKGROUND: Sphenoid wing meningiomas are slow-growing, well-circumscribed, and histologically benign lesions. The recurrence rate is low if removed completely at the time of surgery. Adequate surgical exposure with minimal morbidity is a challenge for those treating these lateral skull base lesions. OBJECTIVE: To describe our experience with the lateral tranzygomatic approach for resection of sphenoid wing meningioms in which the entire zygoma is mobilized and remains vascularized by masseter muscle attachments. METHODS: A retrospective review of the records of 19 patients who underwent sph

Update on minimally invasive face lift technique.

BACKGROUND: The aging face is characterized by loss of skin elasticity, fat resorption, loss of muscle tone and volume, and loss of bone volume. Restorative procedures should be based on the condition of the soft tissues and the relationship between these tissues and the existing skeletal volume and can be performed through open, endoscopic, or minimally invasive approaches. OBJECTIVE: A minimally invasive approach to the face lift is presented, updated with useful details that the author has incorporated into his clinical technique on the basis of 15 years of experience. METHODS: The minima

Anatomic and magnetic resonance imaging bases for the naso-maxillo-cheek flap technique.

A transfacial approach to the deep cranio-maxillo-facial areas by the naso-maxillo-cheek flap technique (NMCF) is indicated for the treatment of some bulky tumors of the naso-pharynx. The procedure requires precise preoperative imaging. This study presents the morphologic bases of this surgical access and the reasonable limits of the excision preoperatively determined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). 18 facial and skull specimens were submitted to surgical facial dismantling by the NMCF technique according to Curioni's method. The clinical application in a 66-year-old patient suffering fro

A radiographic and histologic study of the topographic relations in the temporomandibular joint region: implications for a nerve entrapment mechanism.

A radiographic and histologic investigation was performed in 18 temporomandibular joint (TMJ) autopsy specimens. Disc position was determined arthrotomographically. The pathway of the nerve branches in the vicinity of the joint was reconstructed from serial sagittal or frontal histologic sections. The relationship between the joint components and the different nerves running in the vicinity of the joint was studied. The results revealed the existence of topographical prerequisites for mechanical influence upon the nerve branches passing in the TMJ region. In two joints, both with a displaced d
