BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of mature, lamellar bone within soft tissues other than the periosteum. There are three recognized etiologies of HO: traumatic, neurogenic, and genetic. Presently, there are no definitively documented causal factors of HO. The following factors are presumed to place a patient at higher risk: 60 years of age or older, male, previous HO, hypertrophic osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis, prior hip surgery, and surgical risk factors.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the long-term results of the stemless onlay Comprehensive Nano reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) system.
METHODS: We evaluated 35 shoulders at an average follow-up of 106 ± 14.6 months (range, 80-135) (follow-up rate 66%). Patients were evaluated via the Constant-Murley scale, the DASH score (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand) and the subjective shoulder value (SSV). Furthermore, a visual analog scale (VAS) for pain intensity was used. The passive glenohumeral range of motion and active total range of motion were recorded.

BACKGROUND: Isolated greater tuberosity (GT) fractures account for approximately 20% of proximal humeral fractures and are frequently associated with glenohumeral dislocation and rotator cuff injuries. Displacement exceeding 5 mm is recommended for surgery to prevent subacromial impingement and functional impairment. Current fixation methods, such as cannulated screws, suture anchors, and locking plates, each have limitations, including inadequate stability for comminuted fractures, risk of impingement, and suboptimal anatomical adaptation. This underscores the necessity of a hybrid technique …

BACKGROUND: Beside non-operative treatment the therapeutic options for proximal fractures of the humerus range from closed reduction and transcutaneous K-wiring to total joint replacement. While the first is regarded as minimally invasive the latter is a rather complex intervention. Plating has been disregarded as combining the disadvantages of an extended approach with too often insufficient primary postoperative stability. The new concept of completely angle stabile plate fixation aims on improving this balance by achieving greater stability even in osteoporotic fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Proximal humerus fractures are common injuries, and achieving stable fixation is essential to prevent complications such as varus collapse and screw perforation. While optimal screw positioning has been emphasized biomechanically, clinical evidence regarding the required number of screws in the humeral head, particularly when minimally invasive aiming devices limit placement to four screws, remains limited. This study evaluated whether fixation with four cranial screws provides adequate clinical and radiological stability.

OBJECTIVE: The humerus is the second long bone most affected by pathological fractures. According to Capanna and Campanacci criteria, surgical choice is based on bone metastasis location, on the patient's status and on the residual functional capacity. Metadiaphysis is an area of conflict in the choice between megaprosthesis implant and intramedullary nail osteosynthesis. This study compares these two surgical procedures in terms of reacquired functionality and local control of metastasis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-eight patients (17 males and 21 females; mean age: 66 years old) treated in

OBJECTIVE: Effectiveness and morbidity of curettage grafting and intramedullary decompression in the treatment of pathological fractures due to simple bone cysts (SBCs) were evaluated.
METHODS: Between 2005 and 2012, 34 children with SBCs were treated with extended curettage grafting and intramedullary decompression. Average age of the patients (23 male, 11 female) at surgery was 11.7 years (range: 6-21 years). The lesions were localized in the humerus (19), femur (12), tibia (2), and ulna (1). Pathological micro- or displaced fractures occurred in 31 patients. Surgical procedure included ext

OBJECTIVE: To study the capabilities of cone-bean computed tomography (CBCT) in estimating the bone structure when analyzing anthropological findings.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-four bone fragments (remains) of Napoléon Bonaparte Imperial Army soldiers who had died at a Königsberg military hospital during their retreat from Russia in the War of 1812 were examined by CBCT. A total of 28 tubular bones with different injury healing signs and a skull with maxillofacial trauma marks were investigated. Furthermore, an object from D.G. BACKGROUND: Displaced paediatric supracondylar humeral fractures pose a significant risk of neurovascular injury and consequently have traditionally been treated as a surgical emergency. Recently, the need for emergency surgery has been questioned. We wished to analyse our experience at a large UK tertiary paediatric trauma centre.
METHODS: A retrospective case note review was performed on patients with Gartland Grades 2 and 3 supracondylar fractures observed in a 2-year period from July 2008 to July 2010. We divided children into those treated before 12 h (early surgery) and after 12 h (dela…

This study assessed the effect of the time interval from initial injury to surgery and the presence of associated fracture on functional outcomes after acute posterior elbow fracture dislocation. Twenty-six pediatric patients were evaluated with respect to operation time point (within 24 h vs. later) and associated fracture retrospectively. The Mayo Elbow Performance Index (MEPI) score was used to assess functional results. The MEPI score was 91 (80-100) in patients with one associated fracture and 83 (75-95) (P=0.02) in patients with more than one associated fracture. The MEPI score in patien

BACKGROUND: Though pedestrian versus motor vehicle (PVMV) accidents are a common cause of trauma admission and subsequent orthopaedic consult, the prevalence of upper extremity fracture (UEF) in such events and its association with lower extremity injury (LEI) is unknown. We sought to describe UEF in PVMV accident patients at the time of orthopaedic consult.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted for all pedestrian hit by motor vehicle cases for which an orthopaedic consult was performed at Jackson Memorial Hospital between July 2006 and January 2008. Fractures were recorded by l

PURPOSE: To analyze the outcome of the management of pediatric elbow trauma referred to our hospital after initial intervention by traditional bone setters.
METHOD: Retrospective study of 73 patients, presenting to the hospital with a complication attributable to the initial mismanagement of their injuries.
RESULTS: The mode of presentation was directly related to the type of initial intervention on the basis of which we were able to quantify bone setters into two groups. The first group using a rather rough method of trauma treatment involving the application of tight local bandages, massag

Our clinical experience with different constructions of interposition and arthrodesis nails, used in 3 and 12 patients respectively, is presented. It has shown that cemented intramedullary nailing for the stabilization of long bones and the knee joint using an approach from the site of the defect is a useful additional means in reconstructive bone and joint surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic long bone fractures require precise reduction and stable fixation to achieve optimal outcomes during open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Conventional bone-holding instruments are often associated with prolonged operative time, increased blood loss, reliance on surgical assistance, and higher complication rates. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of a newly designed orthopedic repositioning device in reducing operative time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative pain, and complications compared with conventional ORIF techniques.

BACKGROUND: Open distal humerus fractures present significant soft-tissue injury and bone devitalization that require prompt irrigation and debridement, temporization, and soft-tissue coverage.
METHODS: This case-control comparison of open and closed AO type C fractures of the distal humerus tests the null hypothesis that there is no difference in the outcomes and prognosis of open versus closed distal humerus fractures treated operatively. Outcomes were determined clinically and radiographically and reported by the Short Musculoskeletal Function Assessment, the Short Form-36,and the Mayo Elb

This prospective study was undertaken at a regional tertiary referral centre to evaluate the results of treatment of bone defects managed with the induced membrane (IM) technique. Inclusion criteria were patients with bone defects secondary to septic non-union, chronic osteomyelitis and acute fracture with bone loss. Pathological fractures with bone loss were excluded. Data collection included patient demographics, pathology, previous surgical intervention, size of bone defect, type of graft implanted, time-to-union and complications/reinterventions. The minimum time of follow up was 12 months

Although it is much less common than injuries in the lower extremities, an upper extremity stress injury can have a significant impact on an athlete. If an accurate and timely diagnosis is to be made, the clinician must have a high index of suspicion of a stress fracture in any athlete who is involved in a throwing, weightlifting, or upper extremity weight-bearing sport and presents with chronic pain in the upper extremity. Imaging should play an integral role in the work-up of these patients; if initial radiographs are unrevealing, further cross-sectional imaging should be strongly considered
