Effects of hypomagnesemia on reactivity of bovine and ovine platelets: possible relevance to infantile apnea and sudden infant death syndrome.

Blood platelet function and possible involvement in death of hypomagnesemic ruminants was investigated with 26 Angus cows, 15 mature Hampshire wethers, eight Finnish-Hampshire ewes, and 36 growing Dorset lambs. Hypomagnesemia was induced by feeding vegetative spring tall fescue to 13 cows and semipurified diets low in Mg to nine wethers, four ewes, and 18 lambs. In comparison with controls, dietary treatments reduced plasma Mg concentrations 55% in cows, 36% in wethers, 66% in ewes, and 78% in lambs. Hypomagnesemia reduced in vitro reactivity of cow and lamb platelets to thrombin, ADP, and pla

Increased lipid peroxidation in liver mitochondria from Mg-deficient rats.

Feeding young rats an Mg-deficient diet for 4 weeks increased serum-Fe concentration from 38.2 to 43.7 mumol/L and non Hb-Fe content in liver from 6.33 to 9.31 mmol/kg dry weight. The increase in non Hb-Fe occurred in all liver cell fractions. In heart and kidney, Fe content was not significantly changed by Mg deficiency. Lipid peroxidation measured by formation of malondialdehyde was only increased in liver mitochondria from Mg-deficient rats. Therefore, an Mg-deficiency-induced increase in non Hb-Fe may be involved in the increased lipid peroxidation of liver mitochondria, but cannot represe

Isolated autosomal recessive renal magnesium loss in two sisters.

A familial autosomal recessive form of isolated renal magnesium loss is presented. Two children in this family suffered from convulsions unrelated to hypomagnesemia. Magnesium infusion studies revealed a lowered threshold but a normal tubular maximum for magnesium. In contrast to two families with the autosomal dominant form of isolated renal magnesium wasting, the calcium excretion in the urine was normal.

Effects of vitamin D and diet magnesium on magnesium metabolism.

Effects of 6-9 days of vitamin D3 (D3), 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3], 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [24,25(OH)2D3], or 1,24,25-trihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,24,25(OH)3D3] on Mg metabolism were studied in vitamin D-deficient (-D) rats. Mg absorption expressed as percent intake increased with 1,25(OH)2D3 and 1,24,25(OH)3D3. Urinary Mg (UMg) increased with no change in serum Mg (SMg) or Mg balance. 1,25(OH)2D3 was threefold more potent than 1,24,25(OH)3D3 in raising serum Ca and Mg absorption. In a separate experiment in pair-fed rats given D3, 1,25-(OH)2D3, or 1,24,25(OH)3D3, the diet contained

Effect of varying doses of potassium-magnesium citrate on thiazide-induced hypokalemia and magnesium loss.

The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of three dosages of potassium-magnesium citrate in overcoming thiazide-induced hypokalemia and magnesium loss and increasing urinary pH and citrate. Sixty-one normal subjects first took hydrochlorothiazide at 50 mg/d. After 3 weeks of thiazide treatment or earlier if hypokalemia developed, the subjects were randomized to take one of three dosages of potassium-magnesium citrate (K ( 4 ) MgCit ( 2 ) ) for 3 weeks while continuing on the thiazide: 4 tablets per day (24 mEq potassium, 12 mEq magnesium, and 36 mEq citrate per day), 7 tablets per

Comprehensive assessment of nutritional and functional status of patients with ulcerative colitis and their impact on quality of life.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) are likely to have poor nutritional intake and increased gut losses. This study was designed to study the prevalence and predictors of nutritional deficiencies in patients with UC and their impact on the quality of life (QOL). METHODS: A prospective study was conducted among consenting patients with UC (cases) and healthy relatives of the cases (controls) visiting a university teaching hospital. They were assessed for clinical, demographic, endoscopic (Mayo score) and histological profile (Robart's score). They were assessed for the presence

TUSC3 regulates ERMA-mediated Mg2+ uptake for synaptic function and neurodevelopment.

Intellectual disability (ID) is characterized by deficits in cognition and adaptive behavior, with few treatment options. Tumor Suppressor Candidate 3 (TUSC3) has been genetically linked to autosomal recessive ID, but its molecular mechanism and therapeutic potential remain unclear. Here we show that TUSC3 is essential for endoplasmic reticulum (ER) Mg²⁺ homeostasis and neuronal function. Using a TUSC3 knockout (KO) mouse model, we find ID-like phenotypes including impairments in learning, memory, stress adaptation, and social behavior. Mechanistically, TUSC3 forms an ER-localized Mg²⁺ transpo

Lactose intolerance: myths and facts. An update.

Lactose is the main carbohydrate present in human milk. It is a disaccharide made up of glucose and galactose. It is produced in the mammary glands, regardless of maternal diet. In addition to providing energy, it is the only source of dietary galactose, necessary for macromolecule synthesis, including oligosaccharides, glycoproteins, and glycolipids. It favors calcium, magnesium, and zinc absorption and retention. Its digestion by lactase and subsequent absorption occurs in the small intestine. Lactase deficiency may be classified into congenital primary (very rare), late-onset primary or sec

Mechanistic origin of chemoselectivity in thiolate-catalyzed Tishchenko reactions.

The thiolate-catalyzed Tishchenko reaction has shown high chemoselectivity for the formation of double aromatic-substituted esters. In the present study, the detailed reaction mechanism and, in particular, the origin of the observed high chemoselectivity, have been studied with DFT calculations. The catalytic cycle mainly consisted of three steps: 1,2-addition, hydride transfer, and acyl transfer steps. The calculation results reproduce the experimental observations that 4-chlorobenzaldehyde acts as the hydrogen donor (carbonyl part in the ester product), while 2-methoxybenzaldehyde acts as th

Trace elements and bone health.

The importance of nutrition factors such as calcium, vitamin D and vitamin K for the integrity of the skeleton is well known. Moreover, bone health is positively influenced by certain elements (e.g., zinc, copper, fluorine, manganese, magnesium, iron and boron). Deficiency of these elements slows down the increase of bone mass in childhood and/or in adolescence and accelerates bone loss after menopause or in old age. Deterioration of bone quality increases the risk of fractures. Monitoring of homeostasis of the trace elements together with the measurement of bone density and biochemical marker

Familial hypocalciuric hypercalcaemia and acute pancreatitis.

Four families with familial hypocalciuric hypercalcaemia were studied. The probands presented with abdominal pain, which in three was due to acute pancreatitis; in two the condition was life threatening. Serum concentrations of calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and immunoassayable parathyroid hormone, urinary calcium excretion, and the rate of renal tubular reabsorption of phosphate were measured; the findings were compared with results in 10 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism matched for serum calcium concentration to establish differences between the diseases. Familial hypocalciuric hype

Soil type influences crop mineral composition in Malawi.

Food supply and composition data can be combined to estimate micronutrient intakes and deficiency risks among populations. These estimates can be improved by using local crop composition data that can capture environmental influences including soil type. This study aimed to provide spatially resolved crop composition data for Malawi, where information is currently limited. Six hundred and fifty-two plant samples, representing 97 edible food items, were sampled from >150 sites in Malawi between 2011 and 2013. Samples were analysed by ICP-MS for up to 58 elements, including the essential mineral

A prospective analysis of micronutrient status in quiescent inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: ESPEN guidelines advocate patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have their micronutrient levels checked regularly. This study described the micronutrient status of patients with quiescent IBD and explores whether biochemical micronutrient deficiencies related to time to subsequent disease relapse. METHODS: Sixteen micronutrients were measured prospectively in blood of patients with IBD in clinical remission [Harvey Bradshaw Index (HBI) ≤4 in Crohn's disease (CD) and a partial Mayo score <2 in ulcerative colitis (UC)]. Patients were followed prospectively using th

Unexpected Absence of Skeletal Responses to Dietary Magnesium Depletion: Basis for Future Perspectives?

It's known that a magnesium (Mg)-deficient diet is associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis. The aim of this work is to investigate, by a histological approach, the effects of a Mg-deprived diet on the bone of 8-weeks-old C57BL/6J male mice. Treated and control mice were supplied with a Mg-deprived or normal diet for 8 weeks, respectively. Body weight, serum Mg concentration, expression of kidney magnesiotropic genes, and histomorphometry on L5 vertebrae, femurs, and tibiae were evaluated. Body weight gain and serum Mg concentration were significantly reduced, while a trend toward inc
