OBJECTIVE: To describe two different types of device extrusion occurring in the same patient 1 and 6 years after cochlear implantation and t … urgery for cleaning the tympanic cavity and reconstruction of the bony canal after previous radical mastoidectomy was performed in the right ear first. One year later, cochlear implantation was performed in this ear.
RESULTS: One year after implantation, the anterior edge of the internal device of cochlear implant was exposed along the skin incision. Thi …

OBJECTIVE: The most common location for dural arteriovenous fistulae (AVFs) is the transverse/sigmoid sinus. We describe our prospective ana … ep. Other symptoms included severe headaches, papilledema and visual disturbances, hemiparesis, and mastoid pain. All 10 parallel venous channels communicated with the transverse or sigmoid sinus. Cortical venous drainage was present in 50% of cases. Endovascular ablative procedures, using either coils or ethanol, were performed for all patients. The para …

Two thousand three hundred and thirty four selected patients with ear problem were seen in one of the ENT out patients department of Yekatit 12 Hospital from September 1994 to August 1996 were prospectively studied. Most of the patients came from Addis Ababa. Major clinical presentations were ear pain, purulent ear discharge, uni or bilateral decreased hearing ability. Patients were carefully evaluated by physical examination, otoscopy examination of the ear, schuilers view of the mastoid bone, audiometry findings and pus culture results. Diagnosis of these patients revealed that 1,630 (69.8%)…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring is a gold standard in brain injury management. While supratentorial ICP monitoring is widespread, monitoring in the posterior cranial fossa is rare and lacks a standardized location. To define and validate a novel anatomic reference point-the WON point-for minimally invasive and standardized infratentorial ICP (iICP) probe placement.
METHODS: The WON point was defined as the outer third toward the ear along a line connecting the center of the external auditory canal on the side of ICP probe placement to the mastoid tip on the c…

OBJECTIVE: Facial nerve schwannomas (FNSs) are rare benign tumors that can involve any segment of the facial nerve. Comprehensive understand … the nerve preservation group, tumors confined within the temporal bone (intrameatal, tympanic, and mastoid types), younger age, and favorable EMG responses were associated with better postoperative facial nerve function. During long-term follow-up (mean 87.2 months), 27.7% of this group required additional treatment.
CONCLUSIONS: A function-centered str …

RESULTS: A 21-year-old male presented for assessment of a mass appearing over his left mastoid region, first noticed within the previous 12 months. He experienced growth of the lesion and pain that increased when pressure was applied to the mass. Results from fine needle aspiration and CT-guided core biopsy were positive for osteosarcoma, ost …

BACKGROUND: The postauricular injection technique is a needle-based technique that places soft tissue fillers behind the ears into the supra-periosteal plane of the mastoid process of the temporal bone. The resulting clinical effect pushes the auricles more laterally mimicking the inverse effects of a surgical otoplasty.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the aesthetic outcome of the postauricular injection technique by having the treatment results evaluated by several international, independent, and blinded reviewers.
METHODS: 2D frontal before and after images of 30 Chi…

Robotic and computer-assisted systems for ear surgery are receiving growing attention as tools to overcome the challenges intrinsic to the delicate, restricted operative field of the middle and inner ear. This review highlights recent advances in robotic platforms, clinical outcomes, and emerging technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and artificial intelligence (AI). Multiple groups worldwide have introduced robotic devices that aid or automate tasks like mastoid drilling, stapes footplate fenestration, and cochlear implant (CI) electrode insertion. Seminal studies…

The widespread use of Photoplethysmography (PPG) wearables in various form factors has facilitated long-term continuous cardiac monitoring beyond clinical settings. This study aims to investigate the accuracy of infrared PPG sensors in heart rate (HR) estimation across eight anatomical sites and to characterize the relationship between PPG waveform features and HR estimation accuracy at these sites. We collected PPG data from eight anatomical locations (fingertip, finger base, wrist, forearm, earlobe, mastoid bone, temple, and forehead) to estimate HR. Electrocardiogram (ECG) data were collect…

Spontaneous middle cranial fossa cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks can be treated surgically by middle cranial fossa (MCF), transmastoid (TM), or combined approaches. Efficacy of these approaches and the factors influencing CSF leak recurrence rates need further clarity. A literature search was conducted across EMBASE, MEDLINE, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library. Case reports, non-English articles, and studies with pediatric patients alone were excluded. Proportional meta-analysis was used to estimate the CSF leak recurrence rates. Influence of associated comorbidities and adjuvant treatment measu…

BACKGROUND: Standard methods of otoplasty may risk anatomical distortion. Previous work showcased a novel, cartilage-sparing technique. This study aimed to confirm the safety and effectiveness of the method in a larger cohort.
METHODS: This retrospective study included patients undergoing otoplasty by a single surgeon using a single technique between January 2021 and December 2023. Eligible patients were aged >5 years and had prominent or constricted or cup ears, forming a 2 cm distance from the mastoid. Surgical techniques included novel key-point sutures. Minimum follow-up was 6 months. Dat…
