Prospective clinical validation of 3D printed nasopharyngeal swabs for diagnosis of COVID-19.

COVID-19 greatly disrupted the global supply chain of nasopharyngeal swabs, and thus new products have come to market with little data to support their use. In this prospective study, 2 new 3D printed nasopharyngeal swab designs were evaluated against the standard, flocked nasopharyngeal swab for the diagnosis of COVID-19. Seventy adult patients (37 COVID-positive and 33 COVID-negative) underwent consecutive diagnostic reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction testing, with a flocked swab followed by one or two 3D printed swabs. The "Lattice Swab" (manufacturer Resolution Medical) demons

3D printing and intraoperative neuronavigation tailoring for skull base reconstruction after extended endoscopic endonasal surgery: proof of concept.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic endonasal approaches are increasingly performed for the surgical treatment of multiple skull base pathologies. Preventing postoperative CSF leaks remains a major challenge, particularly in extended approaches. In this study, the authors assessed the potential use of modern multimaterial 3D printing and neuronavigation to help model these extended defects and develop specifically tailored prostheses for reconstructive purposes. METHODS: Extended endoscopic endonasal skull base approaches were performed on 3 human cadaveric heads. Pre-Preprocedure and intraprocedure CT sca

Design and fabrication of a generic 3D-printed silicone unilateral cleft lip and palate model.

The complexity of plastic surgery procedures often requires visualization of the anatomy in three dimensions and therefore demands the development of new and innovative teaching methods. This work describes the development and manufacture of a 3D silicone cleft lip and palate (CLP) model evaluated by surgical residents on its similarity to the biological model. Thirty unilateral CLP models were created and distributed to residents at two different institutions. The model was based on an adult CT scan that was manipulated to resemble an infant with a complete unilateral CLP. This digital model

Effect of 3D Printing Individualized Ankle-Foot Orthosis on Plantar Biomechanics and Pain in Patients with Plantar Fasciitis: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND Traditional ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) are not effective in treating plantar fasciitis, while customized 3-dimensional (3D) printed ankle-foot orthoses are effective in treating many ankle-foot diseases. This study investigated the effects of customized 3D printed AFOs on biomechanics and comfort of the plantar foot in plantar fasciitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty patients with bilateral plantar fasciitis aged 31-60 years participated in this study. At week 0, patients were randomly assigned into 2 groups: the control group consisting of those wearing separate shoes with prefabricat

PCL-MECM-Based Hydrogel Hybrid Scaffolds and Meniscal Fibrochondrocytes Promote Whole Meniscus Regeneration in a Rabbit Meniscectomy Model.

Regeneration of an injured meniscus continues to be a scientific challenge due to its poor self-healing potential. Tissue engineering provides an avenue for regenerating a severely damaged meniscus. In this study, we first investigated the superiority of five concentrations (0%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 4%) of meniscus extracellular matrix (MECM)-based hydrogel in promoting cell proliferation and the matrix-forming phenotype of meniscal fibrochondrocytes (MFCs). We found that the 2% group strongly enhanced chondrogenic marker mRNA expression and cell proliferation compared to the other groups. Moreov

Automated therapy preparation of isoleucine formulations using 3D printing for the treatment of MSUD: First single-centre, prospective, crossover study in patients.

Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is a rare metabolic disorder with a worldwide prevalence of 1 in every 185,000 live births. However, certain populations display a significant overexpression of the disorder where incidence is reported to be 1 in every 52,541 new-borns. The first-line therapy for MSUD involves a strict dietary leucine restriction and oral supplementation of isoleucine and valine. The dose administered to patients requires strict tailoring according to age, weight and blood levels. In current clinical practice, however, practitioners still have to prepare extemporaneous formulat

Clinical application of a 3D-printed scaffold in chronic wound treatment: a case series.

OBJECTIVE: This case series evaluates the safety and effectiveness of 3D-printed scaffold in chronic wounds. The scaffold is a composite of natural and synthetic materials, and can be prepared in the form of powder or membrane. METHOD: We recruited patients with pressure ulcera (PU) and/or a diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). We used two methods: 3D-printed scaffolds alone, or 3D-printing powder mixed with platelet-rich fibrinogen (PRF). Clinicians and patients were asked to rate the scaffold's ease of application and comfort during use. RESULTS: A total of five patients were recruited; four with a

BACKGROUND: Open reduction and internal fixation of pelvic fractures could restore the stability of the pelvic ring, but there were several problems. Minimally invasive closed reduction cannulated screw treatment of pelvic fractures has lots advantages. However, how to insert the cannulated screw safely and effectively to achieve a reliable fixation were still hard for orthopedist. Our aim was to explore the significance of 3D printing technology as a new method for minimally invasive cannulated screw treatment of unstable pelvic fracture. METHODS: One hundred thirty-seven patients with unsta

3D Printing Technology in Planning Thumb Reconstructions with Second Toe Transplant.

OBJECTIVE: To report preoperative planning using 3D printing to plan thumb reconstructions with second toe transplant. METHODS: Between December 2013 and October 2015, the thumbs of five patients with grade 3 thumb defects were reconstructed using a wrap-around flap and second toe transplant aided by 3D printing technology. CT scans of hands and feet were analyzed using Boholo surgical simulator software (www.boholo.com). This allowed for the creation of a mirror image of the healthy thumb using the uninjured thumb. Using 3D images of the reconstructed thumb, a model of the big toe and the se

Asymmetric pedicle subtractionosteotomy (aPSO) guided by a 3D-printed model to correct a combined fixed sagittal and coronal imbalance.

Surgical correction of fixed thoracolumbar deformity is usually achieved by estimating the preoperatively planned correction angles during surgery and is therefore prone to inaccuracy. This is particularly problematic in biplanar deformities. To overcome these difficulties, 3D model for planning, preparation, and simulation of an asymmetric pedicle subtraction osteotomy (aPSO) was printed and used to realign coronal and sagittal balance in case of rigid degenerative kyphoscoliosis. A 59-year-old woman presented with severe back pain and spinal claudication and was diagnosed with a rigid kyphos

Visualizing endocytic recycling and trafficking in live neurons by subdiffractional tracking of internalized molecules.

Our understanding of endocytic pathway dynamics is restricted by the diffraction limit of light microscopy. Although super-resolution techniques can overcome this issue, highly crowded cellular environments, such as nerve terminals, can also dramatically limit the tracking of multiple endocytic vesicles such as synaptic vesicles (SVs), which in turn restricts the analytical dissection of their discrete diffusional and transport states. We recently introduced a pulse-chase technique for subdiffractional tracking of internalized molecules (sdTIM) that allows the visualization of fluorescently ta

Inhaled Aerosol Distribution in Human Airways: A Scintigraphy-Guided Study in a 3D Printed Model.

BACKGROUND: While it is generally accepted that inertial impaction will lead to particle loss as aerosol is being carried into the pulmonary airways, most predictive aerosol deposition models adopt the hypothesis that the inhaled particles that remain airborne will distribute according to the gas flow distribution between airways downstream. METHODS: Using a 3D printed cast of human airways, we quantified particle deposition and distribution and visualized their inhaled trajectory in the human lung. The human airway cast was exposed to 6 μm monodisperse, radiolabeled aerosol particles at dist

Surgical Planning by 3D Printing for Primary Cardiac Schwannoma Resection.

We report herein a case of benign cardiac schwannoma in the interatrial septum. A 42-year-old woman was transferred from a clinic because of cardiomegaly as determined by chest X-ray. A transthoracic echocardiography and chest computed tomography examination revealed a huge mass in the pericardium compressing the right atrium, superior vena cava (SVC), left atrium, and superior pulmonary vein. To confirm that the tumor originated from either heart or mediastinum, cine magnetic resonance imaging was performed, but the result was not conclusive. To facilitate surgical planning, we used 3D printi

Evaluation of Three Sources of Validity Evidence for a Synthetic Thoracoscopic Esophageal Atresia/Tracheoesophageal Fistula Repair Simulator.

PURPOSE: Thoracoscopic esophageal atresia (EA)/tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) repair is technically challenging. We have previously reported our experiences with a high-fidelity hybrid model for simulation-based educational instruction in thoracoscopic EA/TEF, including the high cost of the tissue for these models. The purposes of this study were (1) to create a low-cost synthetic tissue EA/TEF repair simulation model and (2) to evaluate the content validity of the synthetic tissue simulator. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Review of the literature and computed tomography images were used to create c

Engineering vascularized brain tumor organoids: bridging the gap between models and reality.

Traditional two-dimensional cultures and patient-derived xenografts fail to fully mimic the complexity of the tumor microenvironment, limiting their utility in drug discovery and personalized medicine. Recent breakthroughs in three-dimensional tumor modeling have led to the development of brain tumor organoids, patient-derived organoids, and bioengineered tumor-on-chip systems that offer more physiologically relevant platforms for studying glioblastoma biology and therapeutic response. One of the key advancements in these models is the incorporation of vascular networks to mimic the neurovascu

Development and Preliminary Evaluation of A Soft Tissue Microtia Simulator.

Surgical simulation has been used extensively for learning microtia reconstruction and has almost exclusively involved framework creation. However, soft tissue reconstruction in microtia is equally challenging and would benefit from a simulation platform. This study aimed to describe the development and preliminary evaluation of a high-fidelity soft tissue microtia simulator. Three-dimensional modeling software, fused deposition 3-dimensional printing, adhesive techniques, silicones, and polyurethane rubbers were utilized to create a right lobular-type microtia simulator that comprises skin, s

Self-assembled micropillar arrays via near-field electrospinning.

Self-assembly in near-field electrospinning is reported for the first time in this paper, which realized the conversion from two-dimensional planar printing to three-dimensional (3D) structures. Repeatedly stacked fibres formed a micropillar array structure (MPAS) with intervals on the deposition paths by adding carbonyl iron powder particles to a polyethylene oxide (PEO) solution. The growth process of the self-assembled MPAS is documented, and the mechanism of the self-assembled MPAS is proposed. In addition, the effects of substrate speed and injection speed on self-assembly were investigat
