NIR reflection measurements of hemoglobin and cytochrome aa3 in healthy tissue and tumors. Correlations to oxygen consumption: preclinical and clinical data.

OBJECTIVES: A new near infrared reflectance spectroscopy based technology (MULTISCAN OS 10/30) for non-invasive measurements of tissue oxygenation allows detection of absolute tissue hemoglobin concentration and saturation values in real time. METHODS: MULTISCAN OS 10/30 scans a tissue sector of defined geometry at 400 to 1200 nm wavelength with 0.3 nm intervals at a scan rate of up to 400 Hz in reflection mode. The newly developed algorithms are based on the entropy pattern of photons and allow the detection of absolute values of total hemoglobin (tHb), deoxy- (Hb) and oxy-hemoglobin (HbO2)

Efficacy of sensorimotor cortical paired associative magnetic stimulation prior to exercise on balance and gait in Parkinson's disease: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial in China.

INTRODUCTION: Balance and gait dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD) involves impairments in both motor execution and sensory processing. Conventional transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) protocols targeting only the motor cortex may not fully address these complex deficits. A dual-site TMS protocol targeting the sensorimotor network could be more effective. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This three-arm, double-blind, randomised controlled trial will recruit 72 participants with PD. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive sensorimotor cortical paired associative TMS (sm-PAS) followed by

Neurovascular phase coherence is altered in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease is the commonest form of dementia, but its cause still remains elusive. It is characterized by neurodegeneration, with amyloid-beta and tau aggregation. Recently, however, the roles of the vasculature and the neurovascular unit are being highlighted as important for disease progression. In particular, there is reduced microvascular density, and altered gene expression in vascular and glial cells. Structural changes naturally impact the functioning of the neurovascular unit, and the goal of the study was to quantify the corresponding changes in vivo, non-invasively. Our asse

Regional Cerebral Blood Flow Increase After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Is Related to Cardiac Output but Is Not Associated with Delirium: An Observational Cohort Study Using Transcranial Indocyanine Green Dye Dilution Technique.

Background: Despite the success of transcatheter aortic valve repair (TAVR) over the past years, its impact on global and cerebral hemodynamics remains largely unexplored. Changes in cerebral blood flow may be associated with delirium, which may occur in 26 to 29% of cases. We aimed to examine the relationships between global hemodynamic parameters and cerebral parameters in patients who underwent TAVR and their impact on postinterventional delirium. Methods: Patients scheduled for TAVR were enrolled after obtaining written informed consent. Patients received light sedation according to standa

Impact of cerebral oxygen saturation on mortality and rehospitalisation in patients with heart failure and the role of physical activity as a modifying factor: the HARVEST-Malmö Study.

BACKGROUND: The cross-sectional association between cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (SctO2) and heart failure (HF) has been previously studied, but the prognostic significance of SctO2 in HF remains uncertain. This study aimed to assess the role of SctO2 as a risk factor for all-cause mortality and rehospitalisation, as well as to explore the cross-sectional association between physical activity and SctO2 in a Swedish HF cohort. METHODS: In 102 patients with HF (mean age 70.2 years (±12.4); 21.6% women), near-infrared spectroscopy was used to assess SctO2. Adjusted Cox regression analyses w

Ester Formation in Alcohol Microdroplet Sprays: Enhanced Reactivity of C8 to C16 Carboxylic Acids with C1 to C3 Alcohols and the Effect of Water.

Esterification reactions are key reactions in organic synthesis with significant industrial and environmental implications. Esterification reactions typically require acids or solid catalysts and/or heat to overcome the activation energy barrier for this condensation reaction. Here, we demonstrate a new approach facilitated by organic acid-alcohol microdroplets formed from bulk solutions of carboxylic acids (C8, C9, C12, and C16) dissolved in an excess of methanol, ethanol, or isopropanol. Utilizing a Collison nebulizer, a spray of microdroplets is produced and then deposited onto a CaF2 subst

Cardiorespiratory interactions during the transitional period in extremely preterm infants: a narrative review.

We aimed to review the physiology and evidence behind cardiorespiratory interactions during the transitional circulation of extremely preterm infants with fragile physiology and to propose a framework for future research. Cord clamping strategies have a great impact on initial haemodynamic changes, and appropriate transition can be facilitated by establishing spontaneous ventilation before cord clamping. Mechanical ventilation modifies preterm transitional haemodynamics, with positive pressure ventilation affecting the right and left heart loading conditions. Pulmonary vascular resistances can

The fNIRS evaluation of frontal and temporal lobe cortical activation in Chinese first-episode medication-naïve and recurrent depression during a verbal fluency task.

BACKGROUND: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) identifies neurophysiological differences between psychiatric disorders by assessing cortical hemodynamic function. Few trials have studied differences in brain functional activity between first-episode medication-naïve depression patients (FMD) and recurrent major depression (RMD). We aimed to determine the differences between FMD and RMD in oxygenated hemoglobin concentration ([oxy-Hb]), and to investigate the correlation between frontotemporal cortex activation and clinical symptoms. METHODS: We recruited 40 patients with FMD, 53 wi

Brain hypoxia, neurocognitive impairment, and quality of life in people post-COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: Systemic hypoxia occurs in COVID-19 infection; however, it is unknown if cerebral hypoxia occurs in convalescent individuals. We have evidence from other conditions associated with central nervous system inflammation that hypoxia may occur in the brain. If so, hypoxia could reduce the quality of life and brain function. This study was undertaken to assess if brain hypoxia occurs in individuals after recovery from acute COVID-19 infection and if this hypoxia is associated with neurocognitive impairment and reduced quality of life. METHODS: Using frequency-domain near-infrared spectr

Muscle oxygenation of the paretic and nonparetic legs during and after exercise in chronic stroke: Implications for mobility.

BACKGROUND: Oxygen delivery and demand are reduced in the paretic leg of individuals after stroke. However, it is unknown how muscle oxygenation, the balance between delivery and utilization of oxygen at the muscle, is altered post-stroke during aerobic exercise and how it relates to mobility. OBJECTIVE: To monitor muscle oxygenation changes between the paretic and nonparetic legs of individuals after stroke during treadmill exercise and the 6-minute walk test and analyze the association with mobility. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Cardiac rehabilitation program. PATIENTS: Eleven

Minimally invasive staged segmental artery coil embolization (MIS2ACE) for spinal cord protection.

Minimally invasive staged segmental artery coil embolization (MIS2ACE) is an emerging technology for priming of the paraspinous collateral network prior to open or endovascular thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) repair. Its safety and efficacy have been previously proven in various experimental settings and confirmed in numerous multicentric pilot studies for open and endovascular repair. MIS2ACE is safe and has the potential to decisively reduce the risk of postoperative paraplegia, the most devastating complication of open and endovascular TAAA repair, still affecting up to 20% of patie

Relationship of cerebral blood volume with arterial and venous flow velocities in extremely low-birth-weight infants.

Unstable cerebral blood flow is theorised to contribute to the occurrence of intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) in extremely low-birth-weight infants (ELBWIs), which can be caused by increased arterial flow, increased venous pressure, and impaired autoregulation of brain vasculature. As a preliminary step to investigate such instability, we aimed to check for correlations of cerebral blood volume (CBV), as measured using near-infrared spectroscopy, with the flow velocities of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) and internal cerebral vein (ICV), as measured using Doppler ultrasonography. Data we

The brain in flow: A systematic review on the neural basis of the flow state.

BACKGROUND: Flow state is a subjective experience that people report when task performance is experienced as automatic, intrinsically rewarding, optimal and effortless. While this intriguing phenomenon is the subject of a plethora of behavioural studies, only recently researchers have started to look at its neural correlates. Here, we aim to systematically and critically review the existing literature on the neural correlates of the flow state. METHODS: Three electronic databases (Web of Science, Scopus and PsycINFO) were searched to acquire information on eligible articles in July, 2021, and

A comprehensive review of cerebral oximetry in cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: Patients who undergo cardiac surgery are at increased risk of stroke, postoperative cognitive decline, and delirium. These neurocognitive complications have led to increased costs, intensive care unit stays, morbidity, and mortality. As a result, there is a significant push to mitigate any neurological complications in cardiac surgery patients. Near-infrared spectroscopy to measure regional cerebral oxygen saturations has gained consideration due to its noninvasive and user-friendly nature. Cerebral oximetry desaturations during cardiac surgery have been linked to an array of adver

The MUC5B Promoter Polymorphism is Not Associated With Non-ILD Chronic Respiratory Diseases or Post-transplant Outcome.

Motor imagery (MI) is an important brain-computer interface (BCI) paradigm. The traditional MI paradigm (imagining different limbs) limits the intuitive control of the outer devices, while fine MI paradigm (imagining different joint movements from the same limb) can control the mechanical arm without cognitive disconnection. However, the decoding performance of fine MI limits its application. Electroencephalogram (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) are widely used in BCI systems because of their portability and easy operation. In this study, a fine MI paradigm including fou

Use of Raman spectroscopy to evaluate the biochemical composition of normal and tumoral human brain tissues for diagnosis.

Raman spectroscopy was used to identify biochemical differences in normal brain tissue (cerebellum and meninges) compared to tumors (glioblastoma, medulloblastoma, schwannoma, and meningioma) through biochemical information obtained from the samples. A total of 263 spectra were obtained from fragments of the normal cerebellum (65), normal meninges (69), glioblastoma (28), schwannoma (8), medulloblastoma (19), and meningioma (74), which were collected using the dispersive Raman spectrometer (830 nm, near infrared, output power of 350 mW, 20 s exposure time to obtain the spectra), coupled to a R

Site-selective mapping of metastable states using electron-beam induced luminescence microscopy.

Metastable states created by electron or hole capture in crystal defects are widely used in dosimetry and photonic applications. Feldspar, the most abundant mineral in the Earth's crust (> 50%), generates metastable states with lifetimes of millions of years upon exposure to ionizing radiation. Although feldspar is widely used in dosimetry and geochronometry, the creation of metastable states and charge transfer across them is poorly understood. Understanding such phenomena requires next-generation methods based on high-resolution, site-selective probing of the metastable states. Recent studie

Noncontact optical imaging of brain hemodynamics in preterm infants: a preliminary study.

Extremely preterm infants' hemodynamic instability places them at high risk of brain injury. Currently there is no reliable bedside method to continuously monitor cerebral hemodynamics in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This paper reports a feasibility study to adapt and test an innovative speckle contrast diffuse correlation tomography (scDCT) device for noncontact, high-density, 3D imaging of cerebral blood flow (CBF) in preterm infants. The scDCT scans a focused point near-infrared illumination to multiple source positions for deep tissue penetration, and controls an electron multi
