Ointment Fistulography: Introducing a Novel Technique for Single or Multiple Urethrocutaneous Fistula Diagnosis After Hypospadias Surgery.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Hypospadias is a common congenital malformation of the male genital tract. The most frequent complication after hypospadias repair is urethrocutaneous fistula.1 Its incidence has been reported up to 35% worldwide.2 The diagnosis of these fistulas is sometimes challenging particularly with tiny and multiple fistulas. Usually, parents complain of urinary spraying, sprinkling, or passing a single stream of urine from the undersurface of the penis after the surgery. Urethrocutaneous fistulas are not always visible on physical examination. Locating the fistula and status

Outcomes of living donor renal transplantation in children with lower urinary tract dysfunction: a comparative retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES: To compare outcomes of renal transplantation (RTx) in children with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) resulting from lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) vs other causes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A database of children (<18 years old) who underwent RTx between May 2008 and April 2012 was reviewed. Patients were divided into those with LUTD (group A, n = 29) and those with other causes of ESRD (group B, n = 74). RTx was performed after achieving low intravesical pressure (<30 cmH2 O) with adequate bladder capacity and drainage. The groups were compared using Student's t-test, Mann-Whit

Meta-analysis comparing the outcomes of single stage (foreskin pedicled tube) versus two stage (foreskin free graft & foreskin pedicled flap) repair for proximal hypospadias in the last decade.

BACKGROUND: Despite many technical advances the debate continues on single versus staged procedures for proximal hypospadias. In this systematic review and meta-analysis we have compared the contemporary outcomes of proximal hypospadias repair: single stage foreskin pedicle tube (FPT) versus two stage foreskin free graft (FFG) and two-stage foreskin pedicled flap (FPF) over the last decade. METHODS: A systematic literature review of publications in English of the following electronic databases was conducted: Cochrane Database, PUBMED, MEDLINE and EMBASE. The following keywords were used: (pro

[An urodynamic study on neobladder function].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the urodynamic characteristics of neobladders, we conducted a pressure-flow study in patients with orthotopic urinary reservoirs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1986 to 1996, 90 patients underwent bladder replacement following cystectomy, using a right colonic, ileocolic, ileal, or sigmoid colonic segment. The subjects were 38 patients (31 men and 7 women) with stable urination and no evidence of cancer recurrence, urethral stricture, urinary tract infection or vesicoureteral reflux. Their mean age was 60.5 years, with a range of 38 to 77 years. Information on neobladder fun

Revision Phalloplasty: Evaluation, Algorithms, and Techniques for Salvage after Major Complications.

BACKGROUND: Phalloplasty is among the most complex and technically demanding reconstructive procedures. As a larger pool of surgeons perform this difficult procedure, more patients will present with major complications. There are few published data on the comprehensive evaluation and management of these patients, particularly those needing correction of multiple ongoing complications, which may require consideration of starting over with a new microsurgical procedure versus salvage of the existing flap. METHODS: A literature review on complications of phalloplasty was conducted in combination

A Review of Oxidative Stress and Urinary Dysfunction Caused by Bladder Outlet Obstruction and Treatments Using Antioxidants.

Urinary dysfunction is a common pathological condition that can significantly decrease the quality of life. Bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) is a major cause of urinary dysfunction, and various lower urinary tract diseases including benign prostatic hyperplasia and urethral stricture disease cause BOO. According to the results of a variety of animal experiments on partial BOO (PBOO), there is a general agreement that ischemic conditions and repeated ischemia/reperfusion of the bladder are closely associated with BOO-induced bladder damage, and that increased oxidative stress by ischemia/reperf

The use of suprapubic cystoscopy in perineal urethroplasty.

OBJECTIVE: Posterior urethral strictures are difficult cases to treat for urologists. Anastomotic open urethroplasty is the major surgical treatment option, and various modifications/manipulations to the procedure have been recommended in the literature. We aimed to assess the advantages of performing antegrade endoscopy through the suprapubic cystostomy tract during perineal urethroplasty. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-six perineal urethroplasties combined with suprapubic cystoscopy were performed in 33 adult male patients between 2005 and 2011. Pre-and peri-operative records of the patients

Two methods in the treatment of prostate cancer T1-T2.

The author reports experience of 82 radical retropubic prostatectomies. In accordance with the length of isolable urethra two methods were applied. In one of the methods the bladder-neck was pulled down to the floor of the pelvis by a synthetic reabsorbable thread (40 cases), in the other method, the urethra-trunk was sewn up to the bladder-neck (42 cases). The early and later complications are dealt with. Their findings: the blood transfusion during intra and perioperative period was identical in both methods. Injury of ureter did not occur, injury of rectum in one case (1.2%) occurred. In th

Recurrent urinary tract infections in infants and children.

Urinary tract infection is the most common abnormality found in the urinary tract of children, and it is as dangerous as it is common. The infections usually commence in infancy, especially in neonates. Of special interest to the radiologist is the fact that radiologic examination is the only way to assess damage to the kidneys and to determine the long term risk to the child.

Clues to neonatal genitourinary problems.

Most neonatal genitourinary problems are due to congenital anomalies. The first clues to urinary dysfunction are the quantity and quality of the urinary stream, and this should be scrutinized in every newborn. Common signs of dysfunction include anuria, hematuria, and masses. Anuria may be caused by obstruction, a vascular disorder, or renal agenesis or dysplasia. In the male, obstruction is commonly caused by posterior urethral valves. A mass may be a bladder distended by obstruction, a persistent urachus, a hydronephrotic or dysplastic kidney, or scrotal enlargement due to spermatic cord tor
