[Traumatic jejuno-ileal ruptures: apropos of 18 cases at the Central Hospital of Yaounde].

Eighteen blunt small bowel traumas were reviewed in this retrospective study (1986-1996) concerning 12.8% of laparotomies for blunt abdominal trauma. The clinical presentation at admission was peritonitis (9 cases) or hemoperitoneum (4 cases) whereas 5 cases were diagnosed lately because of non specific signs at the beginning. All patients underwent surgery: simple suture or suture after excision of edges (12 cases); resection anastomosis (6 cases). There were no post-operative complications in most of the cases. The mortality rate was 5%. Blunt small bowel traumas are not frequent in our prac

The influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on traumatic brain injuries in Tyrol: experiences from a state under lockdown.

PURPOSE: In February 2020, the federal state of Tyrol in Austria has become one of the epicenters of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tyrol is known for numerous skiing areas. Thus, winter sport resorts became a starting point for COVID-19 infections spreading towards the rest of the state, Austria and other countries, leading to a mandatory quarantine for almost a million people, who were placed under a curfew and restrictions in daily life. Additionally, all ski resorts and hotels were closed. We aimed to analyze the influence of the COVID-19 quarantine on traumatic brain injury (TBI) cases in Tyrol.

The Frequency of Cranial Base Fractures in Lethal Head Trauma.

The interpretation of cranial base injuries has never been investigated from a purely anthropological perspective. Very little exists in forensic literature in order to interpret the significance of cranial base fractures. We analyzed 296 cases of deaths due to skull-brain injuries. The frequency of vault fractures was 75.7% and that of base fractures was 91.9%. We observed the distribution of cases of death according to manner of death and manner of injury and number of fossae involved. These observations were analytically compared to different variables (age, sex, manner of injury, and mode

Predictors of Surgical Outcome in Acute Spinal Cord Injury Patients with Cervical Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament.

OBJECTIVE: A retrospective study was conducted to clarify the predictors of the operation results for ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) patients with acute spinal cord injury (SCI). Detailed analyses of surgical outcomes of OPLL patients with SCI have been rare because most surveys have aimed to investigate OPLL or SCI, but not both. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 36 patients who underwent operation for OPLL between January 2011 and December 2011 were included in this analysis. We investigated the patients' characteristics and surgical approaches and compared the ra

[Traumatic neurogenic shock].

Traumatic neurogenic shock is a rare but serious complication of spinal cord injury. It associates bradycardia and hypotension caused by a medullary trauma. It is life-threatening for the patient and it aggravates the neurological deficit. Strict immobilization and a quick assessment of the gravity of cord injury are necessary as soon as prehospital care has begun. Initial treatment requires vasopressors associated with fluid resuscitation. Steroids are not recommended. Early decompression is recommended for incomplete deficit seen in the first 6 hours. We relate the case of secondary spinal s

Therapeutic options in osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a major and global public health concern. This disorder is characterized by a compromised bone strength and increased susceptibility to fractures, with important health and socioeconomic consequences. Age remains a cardinal, independent determinant of fracture risk; hence, the prevalence of osteoporotic fractures is expected to rise as the proportion of older populations increases worldwide. The prevention of osteoporosis should begin early and continue all the way through life with measures that improve or maintain bone health including regular physical activity and a balanced

Conservative aesthetic solutions for the adolescent and young adult utilizing composite resins.

The demand for aesthetic procedures in today's dental arena is increasing exponentially, yet these desires often call for conservative restorative options, especially for the adolescent patient. The use of direct composite resin restorations offers the dentist the most sim-ple and cost-effective manner in which to create an aesthetic change in the anterior portion of the mouth. The combination of improved materials and innovative delivery techniques allows clinicians to reach these aesthetic goals by creating conservative and functional restorations that have excellent longevity. Spontaneous healing of large femoral cortical bone defects: does genetic predisposition play a role?

Traumatic segmental femoral defects are commonly high velocity injuries and their reconstruction necessitates challenging surgical procedures. These injuries present commonly as open fractures and thorough wound debridement followed by adequate soft tissue cover is mandatory before skeletal reconstruction can be commenced. The definitive reconstructive procedure is therefore often delayed and the optimal treatment option is frequently determined by the extent of the cortical defect. The complication rate is high and femoral non-union is not uncommon in these injuries but associated head injuri
