Retinal prostheses for the blind.

INTRODUCTION: Using artificial means to treat extreme vision impairment has come closer to reality during the past few decades. The goal of this research has been to create an implantable medical device that provides useful vision for those patients who are left with no alternatives. Analogous to the cochlear implants for some forms of hearing loss, these devices could restore useful vision by converting visual information into patterns of electrical stimulation that excite the remaining viable inner retinal neurons in patients with retinitis pigmentosa or age-related macular degeneration. Timely Intervention: Navigating Ethical Challenges in OTOF-Gene Therapy Trials.

OTOF-gene therapy for profound deafness in children has entered clinical trials. Given that there is an approved alternative therapy with cochlear implants, it is imperative to scrutinize the risks, while also highlighting the novel benefits, of this experimental gene therapy. Since the untreated inner ear subsequently degenerates in this form of inherited deafness, the OTOF-gene therapy will be most effective in young children. Moreover, the best outcome in terms of hearing and speech comprehension is expected when the gene therapy is applied before the age of 3 years. Given such "earlier the

Parent-child interaction and early pragmatic, auditory and linguistic abilities in deaf children.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the Parent-Child Interaction (PCI) in prelingually deaf children with hearing aids and cochlear implants; to evaluate correlations between PCI, parental stress and family participation in the intervention programme, as well as between PCI and auditory and spoken language abilities. METHODS: Twenty children (12 males, 8 females; mean age 21.8 ± 4.2 months) received a test battery including Categories of Auditory Performance (CAP), Social Conversational Skills Rating Scale for Assertiveness (SCS-A) and for Responsiveness (SCS-R), MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development

Binaural Hearing Using the ADHEAR Bone Conduction System in the Monaurally Occluded Ear.

INTRODUCTION: The study aimed to investigate binaural cues in the rehabilitation of unilateral occluded ears with a bone conduction hearing aid. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 40 adult volunteers with normal hearing. Unilateral pseudo-conductive hearing loss was induced by inserting an earplug into the external auditory canal (EAC) and silicone material in the concha for ear impression. The adaptive speech-in-noise test (Italian Matrix test) was performed in three spatial orientations to assess binaural cues (summation, squelch, and head shadow effects). All evaluations were performed

ASL Developmental Trends Among Deaf Children, Ages Birth to Five.

Language development is an important facet of early life. Deaf children may have exposure to various languages and communication modalities, including spoken and visual. Previous research has documented the rate of growth of English skills among young deaf children, but no studies have investigated the rate of ASL acquisition. The current paper examines young deaf children's acquisition of ASL skills, the rate of growth over time, and factors impacting levels and growth rates. Seventy-three children ages birth to 5 were rated three times using the Visual Communication and Sign Language Checkli

[Prediction of facial nerve fronting with temporal bone high resolution computed tomograph].

Objective:To report a new CT measurement to predict the exposure of round window niche during facial nerve recess surgery. Methods:Forty CT scans were measured by conventional facial-round window line and limiting facial-round window line method, and compared with the exposure of round window niche after the opening of the facial recess. Results:There was no significant difference in the sensitivity and specificity of the two CT measurement methods to predict the exposure degree of the round window niche, and the Kappa consistency test of the two methods also showed a strong correlation. Musical pitch perception with electrical stimulation of the cochlea.

Studies were undertaken to investigate the ability of a user of the Nucleus multi-electrode cochlear implant to judge pitch in the context of musical intervals. The subject had qualified as a musical instrument tuner before he received his implant, and was able to judge the intervals between electrical sensations with neither training nor the guidance of familiar melodies. The procedures used were interval estimation, and interval production by the method of adjustment. The pitch of the electrical stimulation was controlled by varying the pulse repetition rate, the active electrode position, o

Imaging in neuro-otology.

Imaging the disorders of the auditory pathways is best achieved by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), especially with contrast enhancement. Computerized tomography (CT) still has an important role for disorders of the middle ear as well as congenital, traumatic and other osseous abnormalities of the petrous temporal bone.

Reframing language decisions for d/Deaf children through family language policy.

For families of deaf children, early language planning is often shaped by high-pressure decisions and conflicting professional advice. This brief introduces Family Language Policy (FLP) as a practical, strengths-based framework for supporting communication decisions following cochlear implantation. Rather than framing oral and visual languages as competing approaches, FLP acknowledges the diverse values, beliefs, and contexts that shape each family's choices. Drawing on bilingualism research and findings from (McMenamin, 2019) this article highlights that developmental outcomes are not determi…

Vestibular function in children with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Children with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) account for about 10% of paediatric patients referred for cochlear implantation. Vestibulopathy may be associated with ANSD, and may have implications when formulating management plans in this patient group. We wanted to determine the incidence and predictive factors for vestibulopathy in this patient group to guide vestibular testing in this patient population, and give insight to the aetiology of ANSD. METHODS: We reviewed the outcomes of vestibular function testing in a cohort of paediatric patients with ANSD. RESULTS: …

Laser-Modified Surface Enhances Osseointegration and Biomechanical Anchorage of Commercially Pure Titanium Implants for Bone-Anchored Hearing Systems.

Osseointegrated implants inserted in the temporal bone are a vital component of bone-anchored hearing systems (BAHS). Despite low implant failure levels, early loading protocols and simplified procedures necessitate the application of implants which promote bone formation, bone bonding and biomechanical stability. Here, screw-shaped, commercially pure titanium implants were selectively laser ablated within the thread valley using an Nd:YAG laser to produce a microtopography with a superimposed nanotexture and a thickened surface oxide layer. State-of-the-art machined implants served as control

Cross-modal plasticity in developmental and age-related hearing loss: Clinical implications.

This review explores cross-modal cortical plasticity as a result of auditory deprivation in populations with hearing loss across the age spectrum, from development to adulthood. Cross-modal plasticity refers to the phenomenon when deprivation in one sensory modality (e.g. the auditory modality as in deafness or hearing loss) results in the recruitment of cortical resources of the deprived modality by intact sensory modalities (e.g. visual or somatosensory systems). We discuss recruitment of auditory cortical resources for visual and somatosensory processing in deafness and in lesser degrees of

Functional imaging of the auditory system: the use of positron emission tomography.

Modern brain imaging methods now afford unprecedented opportunities for the in vivo study of central auditory system function. Positron emission tomography (PET) has been used as a functional imaging technique for more than 15 years to study the distribution of cerebral haemodynamic changes associated with auditory stimulation, in subjects with normal and abnormal auditory function. Many of these studies concern processes related to, but not identical with, audition, such as speech perception, melodic processing and directed attention. Additionally, PET has been used to explore auditory percep
