Congenital melanocytic nevus syndrome (CMNS) is the result of an abnormal proliferation of melanocytes in the skin and central nervous system caused by progenitor-cell mutations during embryonic development. Mutations in the NRAS gene have been detected in many of these cells. We present 5 cases of giant congenital melanocytic nevus, 3 of them associated with CMNS; NRAS gene mutation was studied in these 3 patients. Until a few years ago, surgery was the treatment of choice, but the results have proved unsatisfactory because aggressive interventions do not improve cosmetic appearance and only

CONCLUSIONS: Deep-lobe tumor parotidectomy decreases the incidence of parotidectomy post-surgical complications, preserves parotid function, and has a good esthetic appearance.
OBJECTIVE: The existing surgical technique in the parotidectomy of deep-lobe benign tumors can be improved.
METHODS: Fourteen surgical operations were performed (2004-2015) for selective deep lobe parotidectomy for patients with primary benign parotid tumors. The patients with deep-lobe benign tumors were operated on with the method of superficial lobe preservation, which included methylene blue staining of the gland

OBJECT: Staged resection of large vestibular schwannomas (VSs) has been proposed as a strategy to improve facial nerve outcomes and morbidity. The authors report their experience with 2-stage resections of large VSs and analyze the indications, facial nerve outcomes, surgical results, and complications. The authors compare these results with those of a similar cohort of patients who underwent a single-stage resection.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients (age > 18 years) who underwent surgery from 2002 to 2010 for large (≥ 3 cm) VSs at the authors' institution with a minimum of 6 m

Sternal cleft is a chest wall malformation that can expose mediastinal viscera and vessels to injuries. It can be classified into two forms, complete and partial. Its etiology and incidence are unknown and it is often associated with other defects. The aim of this article is to review the literature and report our experience with this rare anomaly, focusing on clinical presentation and management. We reviewed the English written literature about sternal cleft and collected the clinical data of all the published series. We present seven new cases that we have observed and treated since 1999. Li

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing infundibular crystalline folliculitis (NICF) is a folliculocentric disorder associated with filamentous crystalline deposits, enclosed by parakeratotic columns within the partly necrotic follicular ostium and infundibulum. There are only very few data published about this disorder of unknown origin.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the clinicopathological features and pathogenetic aspects of NICF.
METHODS: Clinicopathological characterization of 9 patients with NICF and a second group of 7 patients with coincidental findings of NICF in the vicinity of epithelial skin

PHACE and PHACES are acronyms for a syndrome of variable expression comprising posterior cranial fossa malformations, facial haemangiomas, arterial anomalies, aortic coarctation and other cardiac disorders, ocular abnormalities and stenotic arterial disease. We review five girls and three boys aged 1 month-14 years with disorders from this spectrum. Six had large facial haemangiomas but recent reports suggest that small haemangiomas may occur; hence our inclusion of two possible cases. We also focus on the recently recognised feature of progressive intracranial arterial occlusions, present in

During the past ten years, immediate mandibular reconstruction has gradually fallen into disfavor because of the incidence of infection and the increasing use of preoperative radiation therapy. The difficulty lies in selection of the ideal material for mandibular replacement and the attainment of a healthy recipient bed. An attempt has been made to solve this problem with microsurgical techniques, and our experience in six free tissue transfers utilizing both free rib and free osteocutaneous groin flap transfers is reported. The evolution of these techniques has required confirmation of the fe

The study aimed to highlight the complementary roles of computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and gallium-68 DOTA-(Tyr³)-octreotide positron emission tomography (68Ga-DOTATOC PET) in the diagnosis and treatment of jugulotympanic paragangliomas. We present cases of three patients: a 48-year-old woman with tympanic paraganglioma associated with left facial paralysis (patient 1), a 60-year-old man with asymptomatic jugular paraganglioma (patient 2), and a 73-year-old woman with a small tympanic paraganglioma (patient 3). All patients underwent CT, MRI, and 68Ga-DOTATOC PET i

BACKGROUND: Long-term outcomes after face transplantation are rarely reported in the scientific literature. Here we present outcome data of a partial face allograft recipient 10 years after transplantation.
METHODS: Medical records were reviewed for functional and psychosocial outcomes as well as complications. Histopathologic analyses of autopsy tissues and characterization of skin immune cells were performed.
RESULTS: The patient retained long-term motor and sensory function, though with a noticeable drop in sensory function after year 5. Social reintegration of the patient was marked by r

Radiosurgery has become an accepted treatment option for vestibular schwannomas. Nevertheless, predictors of tumor control and treatment toxicity in current radiosurgery of vestibular schwannomas are not well understood. To generate new information on predictors of tumor control and cranial nerve toxicity of single-fraction radiosurgery of vestibular schwannomas, we conducted a single-institution long-term observational study of radiosurgery for sporadic vestibular schwannomas. Minimum follow-up was 3 years. Investigated as potential predictors of tumor control and cranial nerve toxicity were

INTRODUCTION: Fibrous dysplasia or Jaffe Lischtenstein's disease is sporadic and rare bone affection, mainly observed in young adults. It is characterized by a bone maturation disorder that can affect one or several bones. Fibrous dysplasia is relatively rare in the craniofacial region, (only 20% of all locations). The authors analyzed the epidemiological, anatomoclinical and evolutive features of fibrous dysplasia in a Tunisian population.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The authors retrospectively studied 18 cases of craniofacial fibrous dysplasia, diagnosed at the pathology department of the Sousse F
