Human perinatal stem cell derived extracellular matrix enables rapid maturation of hiPSC-CM structural and functional phenotypes.

The immature phenotype of human induced pluripotent stem cell derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) is a major limitation to the use of these valuable cells for pre-clinical toxicity testing and for disease modeling. Here we tested the hypothesis that human perinatal stem cell derived extracellular matrix (ECM) promotes hiPSC-CM maturation to a greater extent than mouse cell derived ECM. We refer to the human ECM as Matrix Plus (Matrix Plus) and compare effects to commercially available mouse ECM (Matrigel). hiPSC-CMs cultured on Matrix Plus mature functionally and structurally seven days after t

Global Mapping of Interventions to Improve the Quality of Life of People Living with HIV/AIDS: Implications for Priority Settings.

Enhancing the quality of life (QOL) of people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) has become a significant global health goal, as combination antiretroviral therapy has helped to transform HIV/AIDS from a fatal illness to chronic disease. In this study, we aim to comprehensively describe the growth of research publications and the development of research landscapes regarding interventions to improve QOL among PLWH, as well as to characterize interdisciplinary topics and emerging interests of the research community. English articles and reviews published from 1991 to 2018 concerning interventions

Development of a mixture model allowing for smoothing functions of longitudinal trajectories.

In the health and social sciences, two types of mixture models have been widely used by researchers to identify participants within a population with heterogeneous longitudinal trajectories: latent class growth analysis and the growth mixture model. Both methods parametrically model trajectories of individuals, and capture latent trajectory classes, using an expectation-maximization algorithm. However, parametric modeling of trajectories using polynomial functions or monotonic spline functions results in limited flexibility for modeling trajectories; as a result, group membership may not be cl

Treatment Failure in Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Patients Referred to the School of Public Health, Tehran University of Medical Sciences during 2008-2017.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a vector borne disease predominantly found in tropical and subtropical countries, including Iran. For more than 6 decades, pentavalent antimonials have been used successfully worldwide for the treatment of leishmaniasis, but over the past few years, clinical resistance to these medications has increased. In this study, we evaluated CL patients who did not show any desirable responses to the anti-leishmanial treatment within a 10-year period (2008 to 2017). METHODS: All patients from different parts of Iran suspected of having cutaneous leishmaniasis

New Approaches to Identifying and Reducing the Global Burden of Disease From Pollution.

Pollution from multiple sources causes significant disease and death worldwide. Some sources are legacy, such as heavy metals accumulated in soils, and some are current, such as particulate matter. Because the global burden of disease from pollution is so high, it is important to identify legacy and current sources and to develop and implement effective techniques to reduce human exposure. But many limitations exist in our understanding of the distribution and transport processes of pollutants themselves, as well as the complicated overprint of human behavior and susceptibility. New approaches

Epidemiology of tungiasis in sub-saharan Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Tungiasis is a public health disease in many rural and urban slums in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), primarily affecting children and the elderly. Yet, this disease has received little attention in many sub-Saharan African countries. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the pooled prevalence of tungiasis and associated risk factors in SSA. We searched AJOL, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and PubMed for population-based studies that reported the prevalence of tungiasis and risk factors in SSA between January 1980 and July 2020. The study employed a random-effects model and

Integrating the prevention and control of rheumatic heart disease into country health systems: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a preventable chronic condition affecting the valves of the heart. RHD prevention and care programmes have historically originated in more developed countries, implemented in a targeted (or vertical) manner and evaluated using non-controlled approaches. Taking a broad view of the integration of RHD activities within the whole system is critical for health planning in low-income regions with a high burden of RHD and less robust health systems. Therefore, we propose to conduct a systematic review to assess RHD programme models in order to gain a bet

Assessment of oral health-related quality of life instruments for oral submucous fibrosis: A systematic review using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist.

Quality of life (QoL) instruments are becoming increasingly important in research and often used in clinical practice. Various QoL instruments have been developed/ validated for assessment of oral health-related QoL (OHRQoL) in patients with oral submucous fibrosis (OSF). Selection of an adequate instrument is challenging in routine practice due to lack of information on psychometric quality of measurement instruments. This systematic review gives an extensive overview of quality of all the currently available measurement instruments for use in OSF patients. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and

A network embedding model for pathogenic genes prediction by multi-path random walking on heterogeneous network.

BACKGROUND: Prediction of pathogenic genes is crucial for disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. But traditional genetic localization methods are often technique-difficulty and time-consuming. With the development of computer science, computational biology has gradually become one of the main methods for finding candidate pathogenic genes. METHODS: We propose a pathogenic genes prediction method based on network embedding which is called Multipath2vec. Firstly, we construct an heterogeneous network which is called GP-network. It is constructed based on three kinds of relationships betw

Population-based prevalence of human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1), the causative agent of adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATL) and HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), is endemic in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and poses a high morbidity and mortality risk. Its prevalence in the general population is poorly understood. The potential for prevention motivated us to do a systematic review and meta-analysis of population-based studies to estimate the prevalence of HTLV-1 in SSA. METHODS: A comprehensive, no-limit search was conducted in EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science and th
