Anterior Nares Diversity and Pathobionts Represent Sinus Microbiome in Chronic Rhinosinusitis.

It is generally believed that the microbiome plays a role in the pathophysiology of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), though its exact contribution to disease development and severity remains unclear. Here, samples were collected from the anterior nares, nasopharynx, and maxillary and ethmoid sinuses of 190 CRS patients and from the anterior nares and nasopharynx of 100 controls. Microbial communities were analyzed by Illumina sequencing of the V4 region of 16S rRNA. The phenotype and patient characteristics were documented, and several serum inflammatory markers were measured. Our data indicate a

Performance of threaded versus sintered porous-surfaced dental implants using open window or indirect osteotome-mediated sinus elevation: a retrospective report.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this retrospective report was to evaluate the performance of dental implants placed in a teaching environment in patients requiring maxillary sinus elevation. METHODS: Threaded (acid-washed or sand-blasted acid-etched) and sintered porous-surfaced (SPS) press-fit implants were used. Sinuses were managed using direct (open window) or indirect (osteotome-mediated) techniques. Records were available for 97 implants in 62 patients. Preoperative subantral bone heights were determined from radiographs, primarily panoramic. Of 69 threaded implants used, 40 and 29 were plac

Cutaneous and paranasal aspergillosis in an immunocompetent patient.

A 26-year-old Libyan woman presented with asymptomatic nodulo-ulcerative skin lesions present for 1 year. Three years prior to presentation, she had experienced a nasal discharge followed by the development of a nodule in the nasal cavity and a plaque on the hard palate. These lesions had gradually increased in size and ulcerated, resulting in perforation of the nasal septum and palate. Two years later, the patient noticed the appearance of skin lesions: a nodule on the right thumb and numerous nodulo-ulcerative lesions on the extremities. General physical examination was normal with no signif

[Antileukotrienes in the prevention of postoperative recurrence of nasal polyposis in ASA syndrome].

There is a high incidence of post-surgical recurrences of nasal polyps (NP) in patients suffering from the ASA Syndrome. The numerous theories as to the pathogenesis of the ASA Syndrome include an increase in lipoxygenase-mediated arachidonic acid metabolism, with the subsequent hyperproduction of leukotrienes (LT), and an inhibition of the cycloxygenase. Therefore, based on the information acquired on the immunobiological action mechanism of montelukast, a cysteinyl-LT receptor antagonist, it appeared worth testing the effectiveness of this substance in preventing post-surgical NP recurrences

Clinical evaluation of maxillary sinus floor elevation with or without bone grafts: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials with trial sequential analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Our goal was to systematically review the current evidence comparing the relative effectiveness of two maxillary sinus floor elevation (MSFE) approaches (internal and external) without bone grafts with that of conventional/grafted MSFE in patients undergoing implantation in the posterior maxilla. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Medical databases (PubMed/Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) were searched for randomised controlled trials published between January 1980 and May 2023. A manual search of implant-related journals was also performed. Studies published in English

Investigating paranasal sinuses developmental disorders and septum deviation angle effects on olfactory fossa depth using cone-beam computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: The ethmoid roof separates the ethmoid cells from the anterior cranial fossa. From the medial side, the roof of the ethmoid is connected to the lateral lamella of the ethmoid plate, which is the thinnest bone at the base of the skull and is most vulnerable to damage during endoscopic surgeries. The purpose of this study is to investigate the height of the lateral lamella in patients with hypoplasia/aplasia of the paranasal sinuses and deviation of the nasal septum using reconstructed multiplanar images by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this descrip

Identification of a Unique Morphological Pattern for the Diagnosis of Fungal Rhinosinusitis.

Fungal rhinosinusitis (FRS) is a relatively common, but often misdiagnosed disease of paranasal sinuses. The FRS is classified into invasive and non-invasive forms. The non-invasive form includes fungal ball and allergic FRS, and invasive form includes acute invasive FRS, chronic invasive FRS, and granulomatous FRS. Invasive fungal infections are associated with high morbidity and mortality, hence requiring urgent medical and surgical intervention. The histomorphology can help identify certain fungal organisms that cannot be cultured or are rarely visible in exudates. The morphologic diagnosis

Survival and complications of zygomatic implants: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: This systematic review attempted to answer the focused questions: "What is the survival rate of zygomatic implants (ZIs)?" and "What are the most common complications related to surgery of zygomatic implants?" METHODS: An electronic search without date or language restrictions was undertaken in PubMed in March 2012. Titles and abstracts from these results (n = 123) were read for identifying studies that meet the eligibility criteria. Eligibility criteria included studies reporting clinical series of zygomatic implants (ZIs). Because of the scarcity of articles with high-level grades

Zinc as a growth factor for Aspergillus sp. and the antifungal effects of root canal sealants.

Noninvasive aspergillosis of the maxillary sinus is frequently associated with extrusion of root canal cements into the sinus, and it has been suggested that zinc oxide-based materials might promote infection because zinc is a growth factor for Aspergillus sp. To investigate this possibility pure zinc oxide-eugenol cement and five other cements were tested for antifungal activity against five strains of Aspergillus fumigatus, one strain of A. niger, and one strain of A. flavus by zone inhibition and by spectrophotometric measurement of growth rates at various zinc concentrations. All cements h

Orofacial pain disorder or trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia? Insights into pathophysiology and implications in medicine and dentistry.

OBJECTIVE: This narrative review highlights the importance of orofacial pain considerations in the differential diagnosis of trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias (TACs)/trigeminal autonomic orofacial pains (TAOPs). In addition, we provide novel insights into the pathophysiology of the presentation of TACs in the maxillary (V2) and mandibular (V3) trigeminal distributions (TAOPs). BACKGROUND: TACs are lifelong disorders characterized by severe unilateral head pain accompanied by cranial autonomic phenomena. However, the head pain experienced may refer to the face, be present solely in the orofaci
