INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate cranial magnetic resonance (MR) image distortion caused by various orthodontic brackets.
METHODS: Ten subjects received 5 consecutive cranial MR scans. A control scan was conducted with Essix trays (GAC International, Bohemia, NY) fitted over the maxillary and mandibular teeth. Four experimental MR scans of the head were conducted with plastic, ceramic, titanium, and stainless steel brackets incorporated into the Essix tray material. Each MR scan consisted of 4 sequences: sagittal T1-weighted spin echo (T1 sagittal), axial T2-weighted spin e

INTRODUCTION: Our aim in this study was to assess the relationship between the eruption of the permanent maxillary canines and skeletal maturity in subjects with different skeletal relationships in the sagittal and vertical planes.
METHODS: A sample of 152 subjects (63 boys, 89 girls) with erupting permanent maxillary canines was analyzed. On the lateral cephalograms, the stage of cervical vertebral maturation was assessed. Then the subjects were divided into prepeak (before the pubertal growth spurt, cervical stage [CS]1 and CS2), peak (during the pubertal growth spurt, CS3 and CS4), and pos

INTRODUCTION: Gingival recession can be localized or generalized and associated with at least 1 tooth surface. As a result, gingival recession leads to root surface exposure, often causing esthetic impairment, fear of tooth loss, increased susceptibility for root caries, and dentin hypersensitivity. The prevalence, extent, and severity of gingival recession in a young adult Israeli population were evaluated, and the relationship between orthodontic therapy and other potential risk indicators and gingival recession was assessed.
METHODS: Our cohort included 303 consecutive healthy patients who

INTRODUCTION: In spite of growing concern of routine mechanotherapy modalities in patients' health and recent regulations on nickel exposure, there has been no relevant meta-analysis. The aim of this study, therefore, was to investigate the effect of orthodontic therapy on the prevalence of nickel hypersensitivity and compare it with the prevalence in the general population.
METHODS: Several electronic databases were searched. Hand-searching was also performed to identify additional relevant studies. Initially, 324 articles were retrieved. After applying specific inclusion criteria, 8 studies

This case report describes the treatment of a boy with both central maxillary incisors impacted because of 2 supernumerary teeth. Therapeutic management of the impacted teeth was combined with orthodontic treatment of a Class II Division 1 malocclusion. A sequential approach of surgical removal of the supernumerary teeth with 2 stages of surgical exposure and orthodontic traction of the impacted teeth resulted in proper incisor positioning. Close monitoring and multidisciplinary cooperation during the various treatment phases led to a successful esthetic result, with good periodontal health an

INTRODUCTION: Conductive hearing loss is affected by physical changes imposed on the mechanical system of the outer or middle ear. Maxillary expansion can affect conductive hearing loss, and the changes have been investigated with pure-tone audiograms. Semirapid and slow methods of maxillary expansion have some advantages over rapid maxillary expansion, but the effects on conductive hearing loss have not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to investigate long-term effects of semirapid maxillary expansion (SRME) with an acrylic bonded appliance on conductive hearing loss by using a

INTRODUCTION: Posterior crossbite is defined as an abnormal buccolingual relationship between opposing posterior teeth including the canines in centric occlusion. The most common form of posterior crossbite is unilateral with a functional shift of the mandible toward the crossbite side. Lateral shift of the mandible in functional crossbite patients results in mandibular skeletal deflection to the crossbite side. Thus, the asymmetrical position of the mandible in these patients can result in asymmetrical condylar heights. The purpose of this study was to investigate condylar and ramal asymmetri

INTRODUCTION: Unilateral posterior crossbite is a malocclusion that, if not corrected during infancy, typically causes permanent asymmetry. Our aims in this study were to evaluate various occlusal parameters in a group of adults with uncorrected unilateral posterior crossbite and to compare findings with those obtained in a group of normal subjects.
METHODS: Midline shift at maximum intercuspation, midline shift at maximum aperture, and lateral guidance angle in the frontal plane were assessed in 25 adults (ages, 17-26 years; mean, 19.6 years) with crossbites.
RESULTS: Midline shift at maxim

INTRODUCTION: Distraction osteogenesis (DO) has become an accepted treatment method for patients requiring mandibular lengthening because of congenital malformations. However, the skeletal growth pattern of a distracted mandible in the long term has still not been clearly shown in the literature. The purpose of this report was to analyze the dentofacial changes observed during a 10-year follow-up period in a patient treated with mandibular DO.
METHODS: The patient was a 12-year-old girl with hemifacial microsomia who had undergone DO with an external device. Morphologic changes during the obs

Class III malocclusion is a difficult anomaly to understand. Because not all Class III patients are candidates for surgical correction, patient assessment and selection are especially important in diagnosis and treatment planning. In this article, we report the orthopedic treatment of a teenage girl with a severe skeletal Class III malocclusion. Her ANB angle was -4.5 degrees, and she had a 2-mm anterior crossbite, a 1-mm overbite, and a posterior asymmetric crossbite (greater on the left side). The patient refused surgery. We used a rapid palatal expansion appliance to expand the maxilla, sta

We present the orthodontic treatment of a patient with occlusal dysfunction after plastic surgery for multiple maxillofacial bone fractures caused by a traffic accident. The patient had mandibular deviation to the right because of inappropriate repositioning and fixation of the fractured bone and complete avulsion of both mandibular central incisors. The bilateral mandibular incisors, canines, and premolars were also suspected of partial avulsion or alveolar bone fracture. Several tests, including percussion and dental computed tomography, were performed on these teeth to rule out ankylosis an

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to elucidate the influence of extraoral lateral force loading of the mandible on mandibular development.
METHODS: Thirty growing Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups: control, sham, and experimental. To determine longitudinal developmental changes, each animal was placed under anesthesia and immobilized in a custom-built body retainer to allow microcomputed tomography to be performed before and after the experiment. In the experimental group, a fixing device of aluminum was fitted to the zygomatic arch. Lateral force was then applied to the mand
