Arterial tortuosity syndrome is a connective tissue disorder characterized by elongation and tortuosity of large elastic arteries, potentially resulting in multiple vascular stenoses. This paper reports a novel hybrid strategy to treat 'complex' bilateral peripheral pulmonary artery stenoses consisting of transcatheter stent implantation via midline sternotomy and reductive angioplasty of the proximal pulmonary arteries.

Hypovitaminosis D and its consequences are significant complications in the course of untreated celiac disease (CD). We report a case that illustrates the natural evolution of osteomalacia in an adult patient with untreated CD and his response to vitamin D supplementation. In patients with complicated CD and hypovitaminosis D, vitamin D-2 replacement in high enough doses is important to improving functional performance and for the treatment of osteomalacia.

We evaluated the effectiveness of surgical treatment for coarctation of the aorta in infants and young children, based on our experience over 7 years. From March 1999 to December 2005, 168 cases of coarctation of the aorta in patients aged 21 days to 3 years were treated by end-to-end, extended end-to-end, or extended end-to-side ascending aorta and aortic arch anastomosis. INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive aortic valve surgery is performed in many centres worldwide with low mortality and morbidity. In this article the initial experience from Rigshospitalet, the Copenhagen Universital Hospital, is described.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: From September 2001 to March 2002, a total of 11 patients underwent isolated aortic valve replacement using a minimally invasive technique. The procedure was performed through an eight centimeter skin incision and an upper partial sternotomy. The mean age of the patients was 60 years (range 38 to 85 years).

AIM: A review of past and current operative procedures for the treatment of aneurysms of the distal aortic arch is presented in conjunction with a series of 43 patients. In this study, distal aortic arch aneurysm refers to an aneurysm involving at least the origin of the left subclavian artery, but not extending beyond the left common carotid artery. Recent advancement of minimally invasive cardiac surgical procedures have prompted the use of minimal incisions to perform operations on patients with congenital heart defects. In this report, we describe a new technique for closure of a patent ductus arteriosus, using an anterior extrapleural approach. We present our technique and results in five low-weight infants. This approach is safe and effective, shortens hospital stay, and is less invasive than classical approaches.

Isolated sternal fractures are seen with an increasing frequency in traffic road accidents especially after the introduction of the seatbelt legislation. Three pairs of female conjoined twins--a xiphoomphalopagus, a pygopagus, and a thoracopagus--were encountered during the past 10 years.
