An orbital hydatid cyst involving inferior rectus muscle: A case report.

The orbital hydatid cyst is a rare entity and although most of them are located in superolateral and superomedial angles of orbits, involvement of inferior sites is uncommon. We report a 12-year-old case of primary hydatid cyst situated in inferior rectus muscle which was undergone surgical removal. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used for differential diagnosis of hydatid cyst. Moreover, histological analysis was performed, after the cyst removal, to confirm the diagnosis. Early clinical and radiological evaluations and subsequent surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment and should

IL-10- and TGFβ-mediated Th9 Responses in a Human Helminth Infection.

BACKGROUND: Th9 cells are a subset of CD4+ T cells that express the protoypical cytokine, IL-9. Th9 cells are known to effect protective immunity in animal models of intestinal helminth infections. However, the role of Th9 cells in human intestinal helminth infections has never been examined. METHODOLOGY: To examine the role of Th9 cells in Strongyloidis stercoralis (Ss), a common intestinal helminth infection, we compared the frequency of Th9 expressing IL-9 either singly (mono-functional) or co-expressing IL-4 or IL-10 (dual-functional) in Ss-infected individuals (INF) to frequencies in uni

Abdominal echinococcosis: outcomes of conservative surgery.

BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease, infection with the larval stage of the cestode Echinococcus spp., represents a substantial disease burden worldwide. We report here the outcomes of conservative surgery in patients with abdominal echinococcosis. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective review of patients who underwent conservative surgery for abdominal hydatid disease during the period January 2008 to December 2011. Perioperative outcomes were analysed after a mean follow-up of 24 months (range 6-36 months). RESULTS: Thirty patients (mean age 40.4 years; male:female=7:3) underwent surgery. Most (2

[Reduction of the recurrences and postoperative complications in surgical treatment of hepatic echinococcosis].

Results of examination and treatment of 326 patients, suffering hepatic echinococcosis, in whom 449 surgical interventions were performed, were analyzed. In 123 of them the disease recurrence was diagnosed, and laparoscopic, laparotomy and puncture interventions were applied. Conduction of active screening examination of population in the regions, endemic for echinococcosis, application of effective intraoperative methods for prophylaxis of abdominal dissemination of invasive material, usage of antiparasitic chemical and thermal processing of cystic contents and its walls, left after echinococ

Populations at risk for alveolar echinococcosis, France.

During 1982-2007, alveolar echinococcosis (AE) was diagnosed in 407 patients in France, a country previously known to register half of all European patients. To better define high-risk groups in France, we conducted a national registry-based study to identify areas where persons were at risk and spatial clusters of cases. We interviewed 180 AE patients about their way of life and compared responses to those of 517 controls. We found that almost all AE patients lived in 22 départements in eastern and central France (relative risk 78.63, 95% CI 52.84-117.02). Classification and regression tree a

Echinococcus alveolaris: presenting as a cerebral metastasis.

Echinococcus multilocularis (EM) is caused by the larval stage of the tapeworm. The main endemic regions for human alveolar echinococcosis are Central Europe, Russia, Turkey, Japan, China, Eastern France, North America. EM is an endemic disease in Turkey and especially common in the eastern Anatolia Region as seen in our case. The liver is the primary focus of the disease, cerebral localization is rare. Cerebral hydatid disease is approximately 5% of alveolar hydatid cases and generally considered to be fatal. Surgical treatment should be considered whenever possible. We present a case of cere

Combined medical and surgical treatment of intracardiac hydatid cysts in 11 patients.

OBJECTIVES: Echinococcosis is a human parasitic disease common in sheep-rearing regions, which is caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granolosus and can involve any heart region. We report 11 cases of cardiac hydatidosis who were treated medically and surgically. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eleven patients diagnosed with cardiac echinococcosis were referred to the Cardiac Surgery Department of Shahid Madani Hospital from 1992 to 2004. Symptoms included dyspnea, palpitation, limb ischemia, fever, weight loss, hemiplegia, and loss of consciousness. Patients underwent surgical removal of the cy

[Case report: Budd-Chiari syndrome and esophageal variceal bleeding due to alveolar echinococcosis].

Alveolar echinococcosis of the liver is a rare larval cestode disease which is due to the intrahepatic growth of the tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis. This cestode naturally evolves as a larval stage within cysts in the body of carnivores. Humans are accidental intermediate hosts and become infected, either by eating food contaminated with carnivore-originated eggs or by touching foxes. It behaves as malignant liver tumour and rarely causes Budd-Chiari syndrome and variceal bleeding. Budd-Chiari syndrome is a hepatic venous outflow tract obstruction and may be present abdominal pain, hepat

Neurocysticercosis: a rare cause of seizure.

Neurocysticercosis is endemic in certain parts of the world, is rare in Europe and has never previously been described in the Irish healthcare setting. We report the case of a healthy male, originally from Guatemala, who presented to our hospital with a generalized tonic-clonic seizure presumed secondary to neurocysticercosis.

Individual-level agreement between coverage surveys and treatment registers in mass drug administration: A secondary analysis of the multi-country DeWorm3 cluster randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Accurate measurement of treatment coverage is critical for the monitoring and evaluation of mass drug administration (MDA) progr … : The DeWorm3 trial analyzed individual-level treatment data across six rounds of biannual MDA with albendazole for STH in Benin, India, and Malawi (2018-2020). Coverage surveys and treatment registers were linked using unique identifiers. Combined endoscopic and laparoscopic approach to a giant hepatic hydatid cyst with biliary compression: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatic hydatid disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus remains a significant health burden in endemic regions. Giant cysts … l compression of the CBD, and a plastic stent (10 Fr) was placed after balloon clearance of sludge. Albendazole (400 mg BID) was initiated preoperatively. Four days later, laparoscopic exploration confirmed a giant hydatid cyst occupying segments V-VIII and II-III. Laparoscopic endocystectomy with omentoplasty was performed without spillage. The postoperative …

Molecular-based assessment of the efficacy of anthelminthic combination regimens for the treatment of Strongyloides stercoralis in Gabon.

Purpose: To assess the efficacy of three proposed anthelminthic combination regimens for the treatment of strongyloidiasis using real-time polymerase chain reaction (real-time PCR) diagnostic method. Methods: We conducted an interventional randomized assessor-blinded clinical trial in which participants positive for strongyloidiasis were treated with three different therapeutic regimens: albendazole (ABZ) once a day for three days, and ABZ on days 1 and 3 associated with mebendazole (MBZ) or pyrantel (PYR) on day 2, respectively. All participants were seen after treatment for drug efficacy ass…
