Cohabitating in the City: A Case of Hemolytic Anemia in a Patient Coinfected With Babesiosis, Lyme Disease, and Mononucleosis.

In the past decades, the number of tick-borne illnesses reported in the United States has increased exponentially, leading to significant human morbidity and mortality. Among tick-borne illnesses, the most frequent in the United States is Lyme, a disease caused by the spirochetal bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi. Coinfection with Lyme disease and Babesia spp. is common among ticks, rodent reservoirs, and human hosts. At an early stage, both Lyme disease and babesiosis present with flu-like symptoms, such as fever, myalgias, fatigue, headache, and malaise. Due to the nonspecific presentation of th…

In vitro feeding of Hyalomma excavatum and Hyalomma marginatum tick species.

The rearing of ticks is an important technique for studies aiming to elucidate the course and pathogenesis of tick-borne diseases (TBDs). TBDs caused by protozoans (Theileria, Babesia) and bacteria (Anaplasma/Ehrlichia) impose a serious constraint upon livestock health and production in tropical and sub-tropical regions where the distributions of host, pathogen, and vector overlap. This study focuses on Hyalomma marginatum, one of the most important Hyalomma species in the Mediterranean region, being a vector of the virus that causes Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in humans, together with H.…

Imported Hyalomma ticks in the Netherlands 2018-2020.

BACKGROUND: Ticks of the genus Hyalomma, which are vectors for several tick-borne diseases, are occasionally found in areas outside their en … ly photographic images were available, as Hyalomma sp. No Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus or Babesia/Theileria parasites were detected. One adult tick tested positive for Rickettsia aeschlimannii. In the cross-sectional horse survey, no Hyalomma ticks were found. Analysis of temperatures showed that engorged nymphs arriving on migratory birds in sp …

A novel metabarcoded 18S ribosomal DNA sequencing tool for the detection of Plasmodium species in malaria positive patients.

Various PCR based methods have been described for the diagnosis of malaria, but most depend on the use of Plasmodium species-specific probes … A sequencing method and applied it for the quantification of haemoprotozoan parasites (Theleria and Babesia) of livestock. Here, we describe a novel, high throughput method using an Illumina MiSeq platform to demonstrate the proportions of Plasmodium species in metabarcoded DNA samples derived from human malaria patients. Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmod …

A Leishmania-specific hypothetical protein expressed in both promastigote and amastigote stages of Leishmania infantum employed for the serodiagnosis of, and as a vaccine candidate against, visceral leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: LiHyV is an antigenic hypothetical protein present in both promastigote and amastigote stages of Leishmania infantum, which was … inated with a Brazilian commercial vaccine, with sera from animals infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, Babesia canis and Ehrlichia canis, or those from non-infected animals living in an endemic area for leishmaniasis. After challenge with L. infantum, spleen cells of BALB/c mice vaccinated with rLiHyV/saponin stimulated with parasite antigens showed a higher …

Detection of Dirofilaria immitis and other arthropod-borne filarioids by an HRM real-time qPCR, blood-concentrating techniques and a serological assay in dogs from Costa Rica.

BACKGROUND: Canine filarioids are important nematodes transmitted to dogs by arthropods. Diagnosis of canine filariosis is accomplished by t … n dogs infected only with D. immitis and dogs co-infected with Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma platys or Babesia vogeli. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of A. reconditum and C. bainae in Costa Rica and Central America. Among the evaluated diagnostic techniques, the HRM-qPCR showed the most sensitive and reliable performance in the detection of blood fil …

The Chemotherapy of Infectious Diseases caused by Protozoa and Bacteria: (Section of Tropical Diseases and Parasitology).

The possibility of combating infectious diseases with chemotherapeutically active substances depends to a large extent on the structure of t … diseases of man. The most important of these epizootics are the piroplasmoses, which are caused by babesiae and theileriae and which are found, not only in tropical and subtropical regions, but also in temperate zones. In this paper the discovery of a new remedy against piroplasmosis will be reported (acaprin).Further, advice will be given of a new class …

Molecular standardization and epidemiological mapping of canine haemoprotozoa in West Bengal, India.

BACKGROUND: Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) impose considerable morbidity in subtropical India, yet the epidemiological burden of haemoprotozoan polyparasitism, diagnostic performance of microscopy versus real-time PCR (qPCR), and clinical impact across five co-circulating pathogens have not been simultaneously quantified in West Bengal. METHODS: Peripheral blood from 584 client-owned dogs presenting at the State Animal Health Centre, Salt Lake, Kolkata (July 2024-December 2025), was analyzed in parallel by bright-field microscopy and a five-target qPCR panel targeting 18S rRNA (Babesia …

Pathogen transmission in relation to duration of attachment by Ixodes scapularis ticks.

Ticks threatening lineage of Anatolian wild sheep (Ovis gmelinii anatolica) and determination of their tick-borne pathogens.

We aimed to determine the ticks of the Anatolian wild sheep and to define their tick-borne pathogens while molecularly studying their relationships with those of the domestic sheep. Furthermore, another aim of this study is to investigate tick paralysis resulting in the death of the Anatolian wild sheep. Ticks and blood samples were collected from the wild sheep whilst tick samples were also collected from hares, guinea fowls, chickens, and a turkey living in the Anatolian wild sheep breeding area. While PCR amplification was carried out for the detection of Babesia spp., Theileria spp. and An…

Activities of ectonucleotidases and adenosine deaminase in platelets of dogs experimentally infected with Rangelia vitalii.

Rangeliosis is a disease which affects dogs in Brazil, caused by a piroplasm known as Rangelia vitalii. This disease causes a lot of clinico-pathological features, including the coagulation disorders associated with bleeding. The cause of these changes has not yet been determined. Considering the association of purinergic system and hemostasis this study aimed to evaluate the activity of enzymes that hydrolyze ATP, ADP and AMP; and deamination of adenosine in platelets from dogs experimentally infected with R. vitalii. For this study, 12 healthy young dogs (females) were used, separated in two

Spinal anaesthesia for caesarean delivery in a parturient with babesiosis and Lyme disease.

We present a case of a parturient with babesiosis and Lyme disease who was scheduled for elective caesarean section. The caesarean section was performed under spinal anaesthesia, and the patient had a coronary artery dissection 4 days postoperatively. Neuraxial anaesthesia and possible mechanisms for the coronary artery dissection in a patient with babesiosis and Lyme disease are discussed.

Species interactions in a parasite community drive infection risk in a wildlife population.

Most hosts, including humans, are simultaneously or sequentially infected with several parasites. A key question is whether patterns of coinfection arise because infection by one parasite species affects susceptibility to others or because of inherent differences between hosts. We used time-series data from individual hosts in natural populations to analyze patterns of infection risk for a microparasite community, detecting large positive and negative effects of other infections. Patterns remain once variations in host susceptibility and exposure are accounted for. Indeed, effects are typicall
