The AZURE trial is an ongoing phase III, academic, multi-centre, randomised trial designed to evaluate the role of zoledronic acid (ZOL) in the adjuvant therapy of women with stage II/III breast cancer. Bi-functional coatings of carbonated calcium deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA) on Ti alloys were developed by using a biomimetic coating process. The bi-functionality was achieved by loading alendonate sodium (AS), an approved bisphosphonate drug used for the treatment of osteoporosis, into the inner layers of CDHA coatings. Gorham-Stout disease is a rare disease characterized by osteolysis, angiomatosis, and soft-tissue swelling. It is a diagnosis of exclusion and has an unknown etiology. Chylothorax is a common complication of the disease that is associated with a high mortality rate. There is no standard of treatment. We report a case of a 16-year-old female with Gorham-Stout disease and recurrent pleural effusions who was successfully treated with concurrent zoledronic acid and peg-interferon α-2b.

Degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis, manifesting as chronic low back pain and neurogenic claudication, is an increasing chronic problem in an aging population, with limited effective conservative treatment options. BACKGROUND: Oral bisphosphonates are routinely prescribed for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. In clinical trials, oral bisphosphonates have been found to increase bone mineral density (BMD) and decrease fracture risk in the majority of the treated population. However, in both clinical trials and clinical practice, not all patients experience significant increases in BMD. In clinical trials, nonresponse is often defined as a BMD change of <or=0%. In clinical practice, a decrease in BMD greater than the calculated least significant change (LSC) is considered nonresponse to therapy.

When the primary implant fixation is poor, micromotions occur at the bone-implant interface, activating osteoclasts, which leads to implant loosening.
