Integrated palliative care in Europe: a qualitative systematic literature review of empirically-tested models in cancer and chronic disease.

BackgroundIntegrated Palliative Care (PC) strategies are often implemented following models, namely standardized designs that provide frameworks for the organization of care for people with a progressive life-threatening illness and/or for their (in)formal caregivers. The aim of this qualitative systematic review is to identify empirically-evaluated models of PC in cancer and chronic disease in Europe. Further, develop a generic framework that will consist of the basis for the design of future models for integrated PC in Europe.MethodsCochrane, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, AMED, BNI, Web of Science

TRAK ontology: defining standard care for the rehabilitation of knee conditions.

In this paper we discuss the design and development of TRAK (Taxonomy for RehAbilitation of Knee conditions), an ontology that formally models information relevant for the rehabilitation of knee conditions. TRAK provides the framework that can be used to collect coded data in sufficient detail to support epidemiologic studies so that the most effective treatment components can be identified, new interventions developed and the quality of future randomized control trials improved to incorporate a control intervention that is well defined and reflects clinical practice. TRAK follows design princ

The Arkansas aging initiative: an innovative approach for addressing the health of older rural Arkansans.

The Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock is addressing one of the most pressing policy issues facing the United States: how to care for the burgeoning number of older adults. In 2001, the Institute created the Arkansas Aging Initiative, which established seven satellite centers on aging across the state using $1.3 to $2 million dollars annually from the state's portion of the Master Tobacco Settlement. These centers on aging assist the state's population of older adults, many of whom reside in rural areas, live in poverty, and

The Baltic dental programme at the Faculty of Dentistry of The Karolinska Institute: first evaluation.

In 1992, The Faculty of Dentistry of The Karolinska Institute (KI) introduced a dental undergraduate programme specifically for Baltic students. Initiative for this programme came from both the Ministries of Health in Estonia and Latvia and a Member's Bill in the Swedish Committee for Foreign Affairs. The first 10 students were admitted in January 1992, and in 1994, a further 8 students were accepted. The main objective is to train Baltic students according to the Scandinavian model of dental education, in order to facilitate a positive development in dentistry in these countries. Candidates f

Measures implemented in the school setting to contain the COVID-19 pandemic: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: In response to the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and the impact of COVID-19, national and subnational governments implemented a variety of measures in order to control the spread of the virus and the associated disease. While these measures were imposed with the intention of controlling the pandemic, they were also associated with severe psychosocial, societal, and economic implications on a societal level. One setting affected heavily by these measures is the school setting. By mid-April 2020, 192 countries had closed schools, affecting more than 90% of the world's student population. In c

Lung Ultrasound-Guided Surfactant Therapy in Neonatal Pneumothorax and Pulmonary Hemorrhage: Pathophysiology, Diagnostic Ultrasonography, and Emerging Clinical Approaches.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Lung ultrasound (LUS) has fundamentally transformed neonatal respiratory diagnostics, offering a radiation-free, bedside-applicable modality capable of guiding surfactant therapy, characterizing pulmonary pathology, and monitoring treatment response in real time. While surfactant replacement therapy is firmly established for neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), its role in acute complications-specifically pulmonary hemorrhage (PH) and pneumothorax (PTX)-remains uncertain and heterogeneous in clinical practice. This review examines how LUS-based phenotyping c

How effective is mHealth-supported home-based post-knee arthroplasty rehabilitation in improving knee function and continuum of care: protocol of an open label randomised controlled trial from India.

INTRODUCTION: Monitoring physical rehabilitation is an essential component of patient recovery after knee arthroplasty. Monitoring can be remote, or clinic based. In India, unsupervised home-based physical rehabilitation is a common practice, but there is a lack of evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of remote monitoring. Therefore, we developed and piloted a mobile application (TeleREhabilitation after knee ArThroplasty app) based on behaviour design thinking to support the recovery period. This trial aims to compare the effectiveness, acceptability, cost and safety of this app-supporte

Community engagement in maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response: a realist review.

BACKGROUND: Community engagement in maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response (MPDSR) could support health systems in providing people-centred care and ensure accountability for the prevention of maternal and perinatal deaths. Although community engagement activities in MPDSR have been described, the literature does not adequately explain which community engagement in MPDSR strategies succeed, the contexts in which they work, the outcomes they produce, and for whom. METHODS: We conducted a realist review, which involved the identification and refinement of programme theories. An

Feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of group antenatal care on the continuum of care and perinatal outcomes in Sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Women with adequate antenatal care (ANC) experience more reduction in adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes compared to those with insufficient care. However, the conventional individualized ANC models have not significantly improved perinatal outcomes. Comprehensive, woman-centered group ANC (G-ANC) interventions, integrating medical care with education, demonstrate positive effects on maternal and newborn health. While promising evidence exists in sub-Saharan Africa, the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of G-ANC in resource-limited settings require further invest

The role of syphilis self-testing as an additional syphilis testing approach in key populations: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis is causing epidemics in many countries. Syphilis self-testing (SST) has potential to increase testing and treatment coverage in the same manner as documented for self-testing of, for example, HIV, hepatitis C virus, and COVID-19. We aimed to synthesise current evidence on the utility of SST. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and, where possible, meta-analysis. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science for publications published from Jan 1, 2000, to Oct 13, 2022. We included publications with original data on any syphilis rapid tests, includin

Behavioural optimisation to address trial conduct challenges: case study in the UK-REBOA trial.

BACKGROUND: Clinical trials comprise multiple processes at various stages of the trial lifecycle. These processes often involve complex behaviours such as recruiting vulnerable patient populations and clinicians having to deliver complex trial interventions successfully. Few studies have utilised a behavioural framework to assess challenges and develop strategies for effective trial recruitment and delivery of trial interventions. This study reports the application of an innovative methodological approach to understand core trial processes, namely recruitment and intervention delivery, using a
