Tourette's syndrome and psychopathology in a child psychiatry setting.

UNLABELLED: Prior investigations of psychopathology among children with Tourette's syndrome (TS) have rarely used child psychiatry samples and sophisticated personality instruments. OBJECTIVE: To produce an objectively derived composite TS personality profile and to determine the rate of particular problems in a TS psychiatry sample compared with children with out TS from the same clinical practice. METHOD: Children (n = 33) referred to child psychiatrists because of emotional and behavior problems who were subsequently also found to meet DSM-III-R criteria for TS were assessed by the Person

Differentiating irritable mood and disruptive behavior in adults.

INTRODUCTION: Irritability has both mood and behavioral manifestations. These frequently co-occur, and it is unclear to what extent they are dissociable domains. We used confirmatory factor analysis and external validators to investigate the independence of mood and behavioral components of irritability. METHODS: The sample comprised 246 patients (mean age 45 years; 63% female) from four outpatient programs (depression, anxiety, bipolar, and schizophrenia) at a tertiary hospital. A clinical instrument rated by trained clinicians was specifically designed to capture irritable mood and disrupti

Differentiating social preference and social anxiety phenotypes in fragile X syndrome using an eye gaze analysis: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the leading inherited cause of autism spectrum disorder, but there remains debate regarding the clinical presentation of social deficits in FXS. The aim of this study was to compare individuals with FXS to typically developing controls (TDC) and individuals with idiopathic autism spectrum disorder (ASD) across two social eye tracking paradigms. METHODS: Individuals with FXS and age- and gender-matched TDC and individuals with idiopathic ASD completed emotional face and social preference eye tracking tasks to evaluate gaze aversion and social interest, r

The development of thought problems: a longitudinal family risk study of offspring of bipolar, unipolar, and well parents.

There is growing evidence that many offspring of parents with bipolar disorder (BD) will develop moderate to severe forms of psychopathology during childhood and adolescence, including thought problems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the developmental progression of thought problems within the context of a family risk study. Repeated assessments of thought problems, spanning approximately 15 years, were conducted in offspring (N = 192 from 98 families) of parents diagnosed with BD (O-BD), unipolar depression (O-UNI), or no significant psychiatric or medical problems (O-WELL). Surviv

A measure of functional impairment in youth with Tourette's syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Tourette's Syndrome (TS) during childhood is linked to varied behavioral and psychological difficulties and functional impairment. The current study was undertaken to examine both tic-related impairment and impairment from other psychological problems in 59 youth (mean age 11.4 years, 69% male) with TS. METHODS: Caretakers completed a checklist about the impact of tics and other psychological difficulties on family, school, and social functioning. In addition, a clinician administered a measure of tic severity to families. RESULTS: Over half of the sample reported one significant

Oculocutaneous albinism: the neurological, behavioral, and neuro-ophthalmological perspective.

UNLABELLED: Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a group of rare, genetic disorders caused by absent/reduced melanin biosynthesis. The aim of this study was to explore the neurovisual, cognitive, adaptive, and behavioral profile of children affected by OCA, also evaluating any possible effect of the visual acuity deficit on the clinical profile and genotype-phenotype correlations. Eighteen children (9 males, mean age 84 months ± 41; range 18-181 months) with a molecular confirmed diagnosis of OCA were enrolled in the study. We collected data on clinical history, neurodevelopmental profile, neurolo

Behavior and circadian glucocorticoids in prepubertal monozygotic twins with birthweight differences: A prospective longitudinal cohort study on twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome patients.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Low birthweight may have adverse sequelae in later life. Therefore, we analyzed behavioral difficulties and salivary glucocorticoid profiles in monozygotic twins with intra-twin birthweight differences due to twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). METHODS: 46 monozygotic TTTS twin pairs with birthweight differences of <1SDS (concordant; n=29) and ≥1SDS (discordant; n=17) were recruited at a mean age of 6.9 years for a prospective longitudinal cohort study. For glucocorticoid analysis, saliva samples were collected (at 7 h, 13 h, 18 h and 21 h) and analyzed with liquid

Parenting children with and without developmental delay: the role of self-mastery.

BACKGROUND: While parenting behaviours have direct effects on children's behavioural outcomes, other, more distal factors also may be shaping the way a mother handles parenting responsibilities. Dispositional factors are likely to be a major influence in determining how one parents. Although researchers have studied the relationships among maternal dispositional factors, parenting, and child behaviours, few studies have examined these relationships when the child is at developmental risk. Children with developmental delays evidence elevated clinical level behaviour problems, so this group is o

Characteristics of early rhythmic behaviors in children at risk for developmental disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal stereotyped behaviors are a significant problem for many individuals with mental retardation or mental illness. To increase understanding of the development of abnormal stereotyped behaviors, the authors investigated the early rhythmic behaviors of children at increased risk for developmental delays. METHOD: Rhythmic behaviors in 13-month-old children born prematurely and in children born at term were coded from laboratory videotapes of structured interaction segments. RESULTS: While few differences in early rhythmic behaviors were found between children born prematurely

Efficacy of a treatment program based on positive psychology for drug use in juvenile offenders.

One of the factors that increase the likelihood of adolescents starting to exhibit and consolidate anti-social behavior is drug use, with a consistent pattern of consumption of different substance found in young offenders (Aebi, Bessler & Steinhausen, 2021). A cognitive-behavioral group treatment program inspired by the positive psychology approach was developed and applied to drug use in minors deprived of liberty (experimental group); the results were compared to those of a group of adolescents with the same type of drug use in the same center (active control group) at two points in time: du

Relationship of Temperament Differences with Diagnosis, Severity and Accompanying Psychiatric Symptoms in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Temperament differences were shown in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, associations of temperament with ASD severity and accompanying psychiatric symptoms have yet to be studied. METHODS: We evaluated 58 ASD-diagnosed children's temperaments through disorder severity and psychiatric symptoms and compared them with 58 typically developed children. We utilized the Children's Behavior Questionnaire-Short Form, The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). The Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) was used to evaluate psychiatric symptoms and ASD severity

Methylphenidate and continuous spike and wave during sleep in a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is the most common neurobehavioral disorder in children and frequently associated with epilepsy. For patients with both conditions, methylphenidate remains a mainstay in the treatment of behavioral problems. Most studies demonstrate that methylphenidate is effective in treating children with well-controlled epilepsy, and that methylphenidate does not increase the risk of having seizures in patients with EEG abnormalities without epilepsy. However, in patients with active seizures, the results are somewhat contradictory. This article presents the case of
