Cu Nanoclusters-Encapsulated Liposomes: Toward Sensitive Liposomal Photoelectrochemical Immunoassay.

Herein we report the strategy of liposome-mediated Cu2+-induced exciton trapping upon CdS quantum dots (QDs) for amplified photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioanalysis application. Specifically, the Cu nanoclusters (NCs)-encapsulated liposomes were first fabricated and then processed with antibodies bound to their external surfaces. After the sandwich immunocomplexing, the confined liposomal labels were subjected to sequential lysis treatments for the release of Cu NCs and numerous Cu2+ ions, which were then directed to interact with the CdS QDs electrode. The interaction of Cu2+ ions with CdS QDs c…

The role of intracellular trafficking of CdSe/ZnS QDs on their consequent toxicity profile.

BACKGROUND: Nanoparticle interactions with cellular membranes and the kinetics of their transport and localization are important determinants of their functionality and their biological consequences. Understanding these phenomena is fundamental for the translation of such NPs from in vitro to in vivo systems for bioimaging and medical applications. Two CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QD) with differing surface functionality (NH2 or COOH moieties) were used here for investigating the intracellular uptake and transport kinetics of these QDs. RESULTS: In water, the COOH- and NH2-QDs were negatively and p…

A Novel Photoelectrochemical Biosensor for Tyrosinase and Thrombin Detection.

A novel photoelectrochemical biosensor for step-by-step assay of tyrosinase and thrombin was fabricated based on the specific interactions between the designed peptide and the target enzymes. A peptide chain with a special sequence which contains a positively charged lysine-labeled terminal, tyrosine at the other end and a cleavage site recognized by thrombin between them was designed. The designed peptide can be fixed on surface of the CdTe quantum dots (QDs)-modified indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode through electrostatic attraction to construct the photoelectrochemical biosensor. The tyrosin…

Probing the wave function delocalization in CdSe/CdS dot-in-rod nanocrystals by time- and temperature-resolved spectroscopy.

Colloidal semiconductor quantum structures allow controlling the strong confinement of charge carriers through material composition and geometry. Besides being a unique platform to study fundamental effects, these materials attracted considerable interest due to their potential in opto-electronic and quantum communication applications. Heteronanostructures like CdSe/CdS offer new prospects to tailor their optical properties as they take advantage of a small conduction band offset allowing tunability of the electron delocalization from type-I toward quasi-type-II. Here, we report on a detailed

Nano-engineered electron-hole exchange interaction controls exciton dynamics in core-shell semiconductor nanocrystals.

A strong electron-hole exchange interaction (EI) in semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) gives rise to a large (up to tens of meV) splitting between optically active ('bright') and optically passive ('dark') excitons. This dark-bright splitting has a significant effect on the optical properties of band-edge excitons and leads to a pronounced temperature and magnetic field dependence of radiative decay. Here we demonstrate a nanoengineering-based approach that provides control over EI while maintaining nearly constant emission energy. We show that the dark-bright splitting can be widely tuned by co

Effect of CdTe QDs on the protein-drug interactions.

Recently, investigations of biological toxicity of cadmium QDs and their toxic interaction with plasma proteins have attracted great interest. In this work, flavonoids were studied for the affinities for human serum albumin (HSA) in the presence and absence of CdTe G-QDs by fluorescence quenching method. CdTe G-QDs obviously enhanced the binding affinities of kaempferol, genistein and biochanin A by 3.78 to 154.88 times depending on the QDs concentration. However, the affinity of kaempferide for HSA was slightly weakened in the presence of G-QDs. The non-methylated flavonoids were more sensiti

A Wearable Extracorporeal Device for Imaging-Guided Therapy of Sepsis Through Rapid Removal of Bacteria.

Sepsis is a severe infectious disease triggered by pathogenic bacteria invading the bloodstream, with mortality risk increasing by 7%-9% for each hour of delayed treatment. Real-time pathogen monitoring and rapid intervention are crucial for the timely and effective management of sepsis. Here, we show that a wearable extracorporeal blood purification device, filled with bioorthogonal polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microspheres, can effectively remove bacteria while allowing for visual monitoring of bacteria clearance. The PDMS microspheres exhibit excellent stability in the bloodstream and enable

CRISPR-initiated exponential amplification on fluorescently-barcoded microspheres for deep learning-assisted multiplexed HPV detection.

Rapid, low-cost, and multiplexed nucleic acid testing is essential for human health but remains challenging. Although CRISPR-Cas systems offer high specificity, their integration into Multiplexed platforms suitable for near-patient testing has been limited. Here, we introduce a biosensing platform that combines CRISPR-initiated enzymatic amplification with quantum-dot encoded microbeads and deep-learning based image analysis for Multiplexed detection of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA. The high specificity of CRISPR/Cas9 first triggers an exponential amplification. The products are then specifi

Mechanochemical approach for the capping of mixed core CdS/ZnS nanocrystals: Elimination of cadmium toxicity.

The wet mechanochemical procedure for the capping of the CdS and CdS/ZnS quantum dot nanocrystals is reported. l-cysteine and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were used as capping agents. When using l-cysteine, the dissolution of cadmium(II) was almost none for CdS/ZnS nanocrystals. Moreover, prepared CdS- and CdS/ZnS-cysteine nanosuspensions exhibited unimodal particle size distributions with very good stability, which was further supported by the zeta potential measurements. The Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy showed the successful embedment of c

Hybrid epitaxial-colloidal semiconductor nanostructures.

We present a growth technique which combines wet-chemical growth and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to create complex semiconductor nanostructures with nanocrystals as active optical material. The obtained results show that wet-chemically prepared semiconductor nanocrystals can be incorporated in an epitaxally grown crystalline cap layer. As an exemplary system we chose CdSe nanorods and CdSe(ZnS) core-shell nanocrystals in ZnSe and discuss the two limits of thin (d approximately 2R) and thick (d>2R) ZnSe cap layers of thickness d for CdSe nanorods and nanodots of radii R between 2 and 4 nm. Cellulose-based yellow-green emitting carbon dots with large Stokes shift as effective "turn off-on" fluorescence platforms for Cr (VI) and AA dual efficacy detection.

BACKGROUND: Hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) is highly carcinogenic to humans. Ascorbic acid (AA) deficiency can be hazardous to health. And the dual-effect fluorescence detection of them is an important research topic. Carbon dots (CDs) based on cellulose are excellent candidates for the fluorescence probes due to their low cost and environmental friendliness. But most of them exhibit shortwave emission, small Stokes shift and poor fluorescence performance, all of which limit their use. Therefore, there is an urgent need for cellulose CDs with longer emission wavelengths and larger Stokes shifts

Polarization-sensitive nanowire photodetectors based on solution-synthesized CdSe quantum-wire solids.

Polarization-sensitive photodetectors are demonstrated using solution-synthesized CdSe nanowire (NW) solids. Photocurrent action spectra taken with a tunable white light source match the solution linear absorption spectra of the NWs, showing that the NW network is responsible for the device photoconductivity. Temperature-dependent transport measurements reveal that carriers responsible for the dark current through the nanowire solids are thermally excited across CdSe band gap. The NWs are aligned using dielectrophoresis between prepatterned electrodes using conventional optical photolithograph

Red-emissive carbon dot (RCDs@Ag+) nanohybrid as a dual-functional platform for glutathione sensing and antibacterial applications.

BACKGROUND: Biothiols, especially glutathione (GSH), are crucial for cellular redox balance, detoxification, and disease progression, and require highly sensitive and selective detection methods in biological, clinical, and food-safety contexts. Red-emitting carbon dots are ideal due to their photostability, biocompatibility, and adjustable optical features. Meanwhile, silver-based nanocomposites demonstrate potent antimicrobial properties and improve analytical signals by facilitating efficient electron transfer and fluorescence control. Combining these components into a single nanoplatform o

Machine learning-assisted smartphone fluorescence sensing for ultrasensitive and point-of-care testing of acid phosphatase.

BACKGROUND: Fluorescence-based methods are crucial in clinical diagnosis due to their high sensitivity and visualization capabilities. Traditional single-emission sensors often have the problems of background interference and poor visual recognition in complex biological environments. Although multicolor fluorescence visualization sensors can broaden the color gamut to improve resolution, they are still limited by subjective human color judgment and individual differences. RESULTS: We developed a three-color fluorescence sensing platform that integrates smartphone machine learning (ML) to ena

Visible light-induced antibacterial pea protein isolate/bacterial cellulose composite films incorporated with nitrogen-doped carbon dots for strawberry preservation.

Microbial contamination-induced food spoilage necessitates antibacterial packaging, with visible light-driven systems gaining attention due to their controllability and environmental compatibility. In this study, positively charged nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-MCDs) were synthesized and incorporated into a pea protein isolate/bacterial cellulose (PPI/BC) matrix to fabricate biodegradable composite films (PPI/BC@N-MCDs) with antibacterial and antioxidant properties. N-MCDs imparted films with visible light-responsive antibacterial activity by generating reactive oxygen species under light irra

Spent Coffee Ground-Derived Carbon Dots as Redox-Modulating Biomaterials for Astrocytic Differentiation of Human Neural Progenitor Cells.

Food waste-derived carbon dots (CDs) from spent coffee grounds or spinach were synthesized via hydrothermal and solvothermal methods and systematically characterized for their photoluminescence and surface chemical properties. Biological evaluations using human neural progenitor cells (hNPCs) demonstrated efficient cellular uptake and high biocompatibility across all synthesized CDs. Notably, coffee-derived blue-emitting CDs (B-CDs) exhibited robust concentration-dependent antioxidant activity and reduced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. In addition, B-CDs were associated wi

Development of a ratiometric N-CDs/RhB fluorescent probe for selective and sensitive detection of arginine and ascorbic acid.

Arginine (Arg) and ascorbic acid (AA) are essential nutrients that significantly impact human health. In this research, we introduced a novel N-CDs/RhB ratiometric fluorescent probe for sensitive detection of Arg and AA. The probe was constructed through simple physical mixing of rhodamine B (RhB) and nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs), leveraging fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between N-CDs and RhB. The optimal excitation wavelength for N-CDs was determined to be 440 nm, with fluorescence emission at 510 nm, while RhB exhibited excitation and emission peaks at 557 nm and 572 nm

Synthesis and valorization of corn silk-derived carbon dots for antimicrobial fruit preservation.

Developing safe and sustainable antimicrobial strategies is critical for postharvest fruit preservation. In this work, corn silk, an abundant agri-food byproduct with a long history of food and medicinal use, was upcycled into fluorescent carbon dots (CS-CDs) via a green hydrothermal route (yield: 27.3%). The resulting CS-CDs were quasi-spherical (∼1.8 nm) and enriched with oxygen-/nitrogen-containing surface groups, exhibiting excitation-dependent blue-green photoluminescence (λ_em ≈ 492 nm at λ_ex = 414 nm). CS-CDs displayed broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas fluoresce
