To Regulate or Not to Regulate: Emotion Regulation in Participants With Low and High Impulsivity.

Successful emotion regulation plays a key role in psychological health and well-being. This study examines (1) whether cognitive control and corresponding neural connectivity are associated with emotion regulation and (2) to what extent external instructions can improve emotion regulation in individuals with low vs. high cognitive control capacity. For this, emotion regulation capabilities and the impact of emotion regulation on a subsequent emotional Stroop task was tested in participants with low (N = 25) vs. high impulsivity (N = 32). The classification according to impulsivity is based upo

Effect of Adrenaline on Cerebral Blood Oxygenation Measured by NIRS in a Rat Asphyxia Cardiac Arrest Model.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Adrenaline is an important pharmacologic treatment during cardiac arrest (CA) for resuscitation. Recent studies suggest that adrenaline increases the likelihood of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) but does not contribute to improving neurological outcomes of CA. The mechanisms have not been elucidated yet. A bimodal increase in mean arterial pressure (MAP) is observed after adrenaline injection in rodent CA models (Okuma et al. Intensive Care Med Exp 7(1), 2019). In this study, we focused on alteration of systemic arterial pressure in conjunction with the measurement of cerebral blood

Neural correlates of mindful emotion regulation in high and low ruminators.

Depressive rumination is considered a prominent risk factor for the occurrence, severity, and duration of depressive episodes. A variety of treatment options have been developed to treat depressive rumination of which mindfulness based programs are especially promising. In the current study, we investigated the neural underpinnings of a short mindfulness intervention and mindful emotion regulation in high and low trait ruminators in an ecologically valid environment using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Participants were randomly assigned to a mindfulness instruction (MT) group

3,4-Dihydroxyphenylacetaldehyde Is More Efficient than Dopamine in Oligomerizing and Quinonizing α-Synuclein.

Lewy body diseases such as Parkinson's disease involve intraneuronal deposition of the protein α-synuclein (AS) and depletion of nigrostriatal dopamine (DA). Interactions of AS with DA oxidation products may link these neurohistopathologic and neurochemical abnormalities via two potential pathways: spontaneous oxidation of DA to dopamine-quinone and enzymatic oxidation of DA catalyzed by monoamine oxidase to form 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetaldehyde (DOPAL), which is then oxidized to DOPAL-Q. We compared these two pathways in terms of the ability of DA and DOPAL to modify AS. DOPAL was far more pot

Cholesterol-crystalized coronary atheroma as a potential precursor lesion causing acute coronary syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Histopathological studies have reported the presence of cholesterol crystals in the culprit lesion in patients with sudden cardiac death. Given that cholesterol crystals themselves promote pro-inflammatory cascades, they may destabilize atherosclerotic plaques, leading to the occurrence of acute coronary events. CASE SUMMARY: A 60-year-old man presented with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. Emergent coronary angiography revealed a severely stenotic lesion (=culprit lesion) and another non-obstructive lesion in the proximal and middle segments of the left anterior descen

Resting state low-frequency fluctuations in prefrontal cortex reflect degrees of harm avoidance and novelty seeking: an exploratory NIRS study.

Harm avoidance (HA) and novelty seeking (NS) are temperament dimensions defined by Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), respectively, reflecting a heritable bias for intense response to aversive stimuli or for excitement in response to novel stimuli. High HA is regarded as a risk factor for major depressive disorder and anxiety disorder. In contrast, higher NS is linked to increased risk for substance abuse and pathological gambling disorder. A growing body of evidence suggests that patients with these disorders show abnormality in the power of slow oscillations of resting-state brain ac

In vivo measurement of water content of the fingernail and its seasonal change.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Recently, there has been increasing awareness regardless keeping nails in good condition. Maintenance of an optimum water level in the nail plate is very important since water content affects the nail condition. However, a simple method for in vivo measurement of water in the nail plate quantitatively has not been reported. In this study, we applied Near infrared spectroscopy (NIR)-based prediction of water content of the cut nail plate to in vivo measurement to obtain information about the seasonal change of water in the fingernail. METHODS: Diffused reflectance spectra of t

Detection of occult hemorrhage using multivariate non-invasive technologies: a porcine study.

Objective.Occult hemorrhage (OH) can emerge subtly post-trauma, especially when internal bleeding is not yet severe enough to result in noticeable hemodynamic changes or shock. Despite normal appearances of traditional vital signs like heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP), clinically significant OH may be present, posing a critical diagnostic challenge. Early detection of OH, before vital signs begin to deteriorate, is vital as delays in identifying such conditions are linked to poorer patient outcomes. We analyze the performance of poly-anatomic multivariate technologies-including electric

Impact of lipid-rich plaques in the femoropopliteal artery on limb outcomes in patients undergoing endovascular therapy.

BACKGROUND: The impact of lipid-rich plaques (LRPs) in the femoropopliteal artery on limb outcomes remains underexplored. We investigated the influence of LRPs on limb outcomes in patients undergoing endovascular therapy (EVT) for femoropopliteal disease. METHODS: This single-center, prospective noninterventional observational study included patients undergoing drug-coated balloon angioplasty for femoropopliteal disease between July 2022 and November 2024. Near-infrared spectroscopy-intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) assessment was conducted on the entire femoropopliteal arterial segment. L

Efficacy and safety of high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation combined with digital rehabilitation on upper limb function in stroke patients: study protocol for a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled confirmatory trial.

BACKGROUND: Stroke remains a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide, with a significant proportion of survivors suffering from persistent upper limb impairments despite conventional rehabilitation. High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) has emerged as a promising neuromodulation technique capable of precise cortical targeting, potentially enhancing motor recovery when combined with structured rehabilitation. This study aims to confirm the efficacy and safety of HD-tDCS combined with digital upper limb rehabilitation in improving upper limb motor function amo

Intensive care management of right ventricular failure and pulmonary hypertension crises.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH), an often unrelenting disease that carries with it significant morbidity and mortality, affects not only the pulmonary vasculature but, in turn, the right ventricle as well. The survival of patients with PH is closely related to the right ventricular function. Therefore, having an understanding of how to manage right ventricular failure (RVF) and acute pulmonary hypertensive crises is imperative for clinicians who encounter these patients. This review addresses the management of these patients in detail, addressing: (a) the pathophysiology of RVF, (b) intensive care

Remote peripheral tissue oxygenation does not predict postoperative free flap complications in complex head and neck cancer surgery: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing free flap reconstruction after head and neck cancer may develop free flap complications. In the perioperative period, haemoglobin content and oxygen tissue saturation (StO2) measured directly on the free flap reflect peripheral tissue oxygenation. However, in this type of surgery, StO2 cannot always be applied directly or proximate to the free flap. The aim of this study was to assess the possible value of StO2 measured at the thenar eminence and other 24hour perioperative factors on free flap complications. METHODS: Inclusion criteria corresponded to patients

(Near-Infrared) Fluorescence-Guided Surgery Under Ambient Light Conditions: A Next Step to Embedment of the Technology in Clinical Routine.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In open surgery procedures, after temporarily dimming the lights in the operation theatre, the Photo Dynamic Eye (PDE) fluorescence camera has, amongst others, been used for fluorescence-guided sentinel node (SN) biopsy procedures. To improve the clinical utility and logistics of fluorescence-guided surgery, we developed and evaluated a prototype modified PDE (m-PDE) fluorescence camera system. METHODS: The m-PDE works under ambient light conditions and includes a white light mode and a pseudo-green-colored fluorescence mode (including a gray-scaled anatomical backgrou

Peripheral blood flow changes in response to postexercise cold water immersion.

This study compared the effect of postexercise water immersion (WI) at different temperatures on common femoral artery blood flow (CFA), muscle (total haemoglobin; tHb) and skin perfusion (cutaneous vascular conductance; CVC), assessed by Doppler ultrasound, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and laser Doppler flowmetry, respectively. Given that heat stress may influence the vascular response during cooling, nine men cycled for 25 min at the first ventilatory threshold followed by intermittent 30-s cycling at 90% peak power until exhaustion at 32·8 ± 0·4°C and 32 ± 5% RH. They then received 5-m

Time to surgery and preoperative cerebral hemodynamics predict postoperative white matter injury in neonates with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Hypoxic-ischemic white mater brain injury commonly occurs in neonates with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). Approximately one half of HLHS survivors will exhibit neurobehavioral symptoms believed to be associated with this injury, although the exact timing of the injury is unknown. METHODS: Neonates with HLHS were recruited for pre- and postoperative monitoring of cerebral oxygen saturation, cerebral oxygen extraction fraction, and cerebral blood flow using 2 noninvasive optical-based techniques: diffuse optical spectroscopy and diffuse correlation spectroscopy. Anatomic mag

Neurovascular coupling in simultaneous EEG-fNIRS studies: A scoping review of analytical frameworks and clinical applications.

Simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) have been used across cognitive and physiological states and in diverse clinical populations. However, the interpretation of cross-modal coupling remains difficult because findings from different analytical frameworks, populations, and experimental conditions have not been systematically mapped. This scoping review followed the Arksey and O'Malley framework and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Duration of surfactant administration and its impact on stabilisation of vital parameters in very preterm neonates <28 weeks of gestational age (SurfStab): 1 min versus 5 min-study protocol for a prospective randomised-controlled phase IV trial.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory distress syndrome remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in extremely preterm neonates. Surfactant replacement therapy substantially improves survival. Current European Consensus Guidelines recommend the less invasive surfactant administration (LISA) technique. However, no evidence exists on whether the duration of administration affects physiological stability. Rapid surfactant administration may provoke transient hypoxia or bradycardia due to airway obstruction, whereas slower delivery could potentially reduce such fluctuations. METHODS/DESIGN:

Neurophysiological signatures of latent brain vulnerability in perioperative neurocognitive disorders: integrating EEG, cerebral oximetry, and processed EEG.

Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND) remain difficult to prevent because conventional cognitive assessments may fail to capture brain vulnerability in patients who appear cognitively normal before anesthesia and surgery. This narrative review examines the potential role of objective perioperative neuromonitoring markers as complements to cognitive scales, focusing on electroencephalography (EEG), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)/cerebral oximetry, and processed EEG/bispectral index (BIS). Evidence from perioperative studies and related neurophysiological literature suggests that reduc
