BACKGROUND: Emergency department observation units (EDOU) are often used for patients with cellulitis to provide intravenous antibiotics followed by a transition to an oral regimen for discharge. The cold growth phenotypes and transcriptional activation of cold stress adaptation genes was evaluated amongst Listeria monocytogenes strains from human listeriosis cases, food products and associated production environments. Significant cold growth phenotypic variation was observed during growth of such strains in rich (BHI) as well as chemically defined minimal (MDM) nutrient conditions. Hospital wastewater (HWW) is a critical hotspot for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and pathogens. This study provides the first comprehensive metagenomic characterization of HWW across Poland, analyzing 64 medical facilities across two seasons via Nanopore long-read sequencing (total of 128 HWW samples).
