Challenges and opportunities to addressing non-communicable diseases after climate-related disasters in Mozambique: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Low- and middle-income countries are facing a new double burden: an increasing frequency of extreme weather events that disrupt healthcare services for people living with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and a rising prevalence of NCDs. In Mozambique, NCDs are the second leading cause of death among adults, and climate-related disasters, occurring with increasing intensity, exacerbate this problem. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to understand the challenges and opportunities for addressing the needs of persons living with NCDs in the aftermath of extreme weather events in Mozambique

Psychometric validation of the Loyola Generativity Scale in Chilean teachers: evidence for a three factor structure.

This study examined the psychometric properties and factorial structure of the Loyola Generativity Scale (LGS) in a large sample of Chilean primary school teachers, addressing the need for validated measures of generativity in Latin American educational contexts. Using a cross-sectional design and a rigorous analytical framework that included item purification based on MSA criteria, polychoric correlations, robust unweighted least-squares estimation, and a Solomon split-sample approach, the findings provide strong evidence for the reliability and structural validity of a refined version of the

Year-round consistency in upper extremity trauma surgery in Florida: challenging the concept of "trauma season": a retrospective study.

PURPOSE: Upper extremity (UE) trauma requiring surgery in the United States typically peaks during the summer and fall; however, Florida's climate may create a distinct temporal pattern. This study analyzes year-round UE trauma surgery volumes at a South Florida academic medical center to explore the potential impact of environmental factors. METHODS: Current Procedural Terminology (CPT; standardized codes used to report medical and surgical procedures) databases were analyzed to identify acute UE trauma codes over a 132-month period, and surgical volume was tabulated accordingly. Raw data we

Illuminating the complex interplay of risk factors for depression symptoms within a large-scale US longitudinal cohort.

PURPOSE: Understanding depression susceptibility requires research to assimilate a vast and complex array of risk factors comprehensively. We quantify the influence of prominent individual-level and wider social environmental risk factors on symptom occurrence. METHODS: We leverage data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (US) to integrate factors spanning biological (genetic), psychological (health, personality, positive cognition), social (family, peers, school, and neighbourhood), built (geocoded healthcare, education, religion, crime, poverty, political clim

Democritus: Homotopy-Localized Causal Discourse Extraction from Language.

Natural-language documents contain many causal claims, but those claims are unstable under paraphrase, granularity shifts, and contextual drift. A collection may express one mechanism in many surface forms, while neighboring studies may agree locally yet fail to glue globally because relation families, polarities, temporal scopes, or regimes differ. This paper studies that post-extraction problem through Democritus, an implemented system for extracting, normalizing, localizing, and diagnosing causal discourse. We do not claim to identify ground-truth causal structure from text alone. Instead,

The new normal: Simultaneous temporal increases in workload and physician well-being experienced by Stanford pathology in a transformed work environment.

Healthcare systems face immense economic pressures, workforce challenges, and increased demand for services, culminating in high occupational burnout among physicians. Here, we evaluate how one department tried to navigate these evolving challenges while simultaneously supporting the occupational well-being and work environment characteristics that influence well-being among pathologists. Existing electronic health records data from the Stanford Medicine Department of Pathology and de-identified data collected from the Stanford Doctor Survey™ were used to evaluate caseload sign-out patterns an

Three Decades of Land Cover Changes Shifted Environment-Driven Greening Towards Browning in Coastal China.

Coastal vegetation serves as a protective buffer against the deleterious impacts of storm surges, influencing the dynamic exchange of energy and matter and mediating the lateral transport of carbon from land to the ocean. Comprehensive understanding of coastal vegetation dynamics is crucial for sustaining the ecological and biogeochemical functions of coastal ecosystems. Despite the considerable influence of land cover change (LCC) on vegetation greenness, quantifying this impact along the rapidly developing Chinese coasts amid significant social and economic changes over the past decades rema

Association between heatwave exposure and rapid kidney function decline: a longitudinal cohort study from CHARLS.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: The worldwide prevalence of renal disease is substantial, with a significant impact on public health and the economy due to the high rates of mortality and morbidity associated with this condition. It is anticipated that projected rises in temperature in a warm climate will have a significant impact on kidney health, with older adults potentially experiencing the most pronounced effects. METHODS: In the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, we assessed daily heatwave exposure individually for 6450 participants and kidney function decline during follow-up f

Health implications of established and emerging stressors: design of the prospective New Jersey Population Health Cohort (NJHealth) Study.

INTRODUCTION: Some stressors, like the death of a partner, are common and rigorously studied, while others, such as those related to climate change or social media, are just emerging and in need of systematic research. The New Jersey Population Health Cohort (NJHealth) Study aims to characterise established and emerging stressors and delineate the pathways through which they influence health, especially among groups likely to experience chronic exposure to stressors including immigrants, people of colour, multigenerational families and low-income families. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A prospective

Combined effect of heat and outdoor O3 pollution on emergency department visits in Florida.

Short-term exposure to air pollution and heat can independently or jointly increase health risks, but national or regional health estimates may not accurately apply to local areas due to differences in pollution, climate, and population adaptation. This study focused on the state of Florida in the US, aiming to estimate the individual and interactive effects of ozone (O3) and Heat on localized human health outcomes. We applied time-series generalized additive models to estimate the effects of heat index (HI) and O3 on emergency department visits (ED) for all causes (n = 79378186) and category-

Mammal community composition and season determine the abundance of questing ticks in mountainous forests of central Japan.

Understanding the ecological drivers of tick abundance is crucial to mitigate the growing risk of tick-borne diseases such as severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) in Japan. This study investigates how mammal community composition and seasonality affect the abundance of questing ticks in mountainous forests of Gifu Prefecture, a border region of the SFTS endemic zone. Camera traps were used to monitor mammal species, and questing ticks were collected monthly via flagging along transects in 10 forest plots during 2021-2022. We recorded 14 mammal species including small-sized mammal

High sensitivity to ocean acidification in wild out-migrating juvenile Pacific salmon is not impacted by feeding success.

Salmon populations are declining worldwide, with high mortality rates during juvenile marine migration presenting a bottleneck to recruitment. The ocean conditions along the main migratory route of juvenile salmon in British Columbia are characterized by high variability in CO2, with the amplitude, duration, and frequency of ocean acidification events exacerbated by climate change. Similarly, the variability in ocean conditions affects the abundance and diversity of plankton prey, leading to areas of food paucity for juvenile salmon. We investigated the combined effects of ocean acidification

Seasonality and mycobacterial infectious diseases in animals and humans: is there a generality of seasonal patterns for mycobacterial infections?

BACKGROUND: Seasonal patterns of mycobacterial infections affecting humans and animals remain a complex and understudied aspect of infectious disease dynamics. These intra-annual patterns are increasingly relevant in the context of global climate change, which may influence the timing and geographic spread of these diseases. A better understanding of such patterns could improve surveillance, prevention, and control strategies. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods bibliometric review combining bibliographic searches and scoping analysis to synthesize decades of research on the seasonality of
