[Patchy changes in white matter in cranial computerized and magnetic resonance tomography--significance for (differential) diagnosis of dementia of the Alzheimer type and vascular dementia].

With the advancement of technical progress, especially with respect to magnetic resonance imaging, patchy cerebral white matter lesions (WML) are being found with increasing frequency. The (differential) diagnosis between the two main dementias of old age, (senile) dementia of the Alzheimer type ([S]DAT) and vascular dementia (VD) is made more frequently in favour of the latter, since the detection of WML leads to support a vascular origin for dementia. The present article reviews the literature concerning X-ray computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in these disorders.

The Impact of Changes to the Payment Restrictions of the National Reimbursement Drug List in China: An Empirical Study Employing a Stacked Difference-in-Differences Approach.

Background: Since 2004, China's National Reimbursement Drug List has implemented a payment restriction management system for certain drugs, to safeguard the fund and avoid unreasonable medication. With the development of medical technology and changes in clinical needs, the fairness and rationality of payment restrictions have come under scrutiny. In recent years, the National Healthcare Security Administration has gradually lifted the payment restrictions for some drugs during dynamic adjustments to the National Reimbursement Drug List; however, the net effect of this policy adjustment still

Rare endocannabinoid system variants identified by whole-exome sequencing and structural modeling in adults with severe obesity predominantly of childhood onset.

BACKGROUND: The endocannabinoid system (ECS) regulates key processes in energy homeostasis, but its contribution to severe obesity beginning in childhood or adolescence remains incompletely understood. This study aimed to identify rare variants in ECS genes and evaluate their potential structural effects. METHODS: A total of 93 adults with severe obesity beginning before 21 years of age (BMI ≥ 35 kg/m²) were recruited from two specialized obesity programs; among participants with onset information, 97.8% reported childhood onset. Whole-exome sequencing was performed, followed by targeted anal

Sixty years of linguistic change in the poetry of a Zen practitioner: a longitudinal case study of Gary Snyder.

Can decades of Zen meditation leave measurable traces in the practitioner's natural language? Long-term contemplative practice is widely understood to reshape emotion regulation, self-referential processing, and perceptual engagement, yet empirical research on these transformations has been fundamentally constrained by two limitations: an observation window of weeks to months at most, and an almost exclusive reliance on self-report and neuroimaging measures that cannot reach the automated, prereflective dimensions of psychological life most directly reshaped by sustained practice. This study a

Computer vision augmented indocyanine green near-infrared fluorescence (ICG-NIRF) signal-to-background ratio (SBR) for identification of extrahepatic biliary structures in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Indocyanine green near-infrared fluorescence (ICG-NIRF) improves visualization of extrahepatic biliary ducts (EHBD) compared to white light imaging (WLI) in laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). However, the optimal EHBD signal is limited by background hepatic fluorescence disturbance, complicating interpretation of critical structures despite ICG pharmacologic approaches. We describe the feasibility of multi-modal computer vision (CV) models to improve the discrimination of the EHBD ICG signal to liver background ratio (SBR), facilitating intra-operative visualization of critical s

Tri-dimensional pattern analysis of foodstuff bitemarks: A quantitative method of comparison.

Bitemark analysis has long been an important field within of forensic odontology, yet it remains controversial due to its inherent subjectivity and the limitations of currently adopted 2D methodologies. The National Institute of Standards and Technology has highlighted the lack of sufficient scientific foundation for conventional bitemark analysis, particularly with respect to bitemarks impressed on human skin, concerning uniqueness, reproducibility, and evidentiary reliability. Rather than addressing the limitations identified for human skin bitemark analysis, this study proposes a three-dime

Development of National Diagnostic Reference Levels for Chest Computed Tomography in Georgia.

Computed tomography (CT) is an essential diagnostic modality in modern medicine; however, it is associated with relatively high radiation exposure. Optimizing radiation dose while maintaining diagnostic image quality remains a major priority in clinical practice. Diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) are internationally recommended tools for dose optimization, yet national DRLs for chest CT examinations have not previously been established in Georgia. The objective of this study is to assess radiation dose metrics from non-contrast chest CT examinations across medical institutions in Georgia and

Enhancing PET/CT Radiomics Robustness Through Graph Signal Processing.

Background/Objectives: Prostate cancer (PCa) frequently metastasizes to bone, leading to severe clinical complications and reduced quality of life. Accurate and robust imaging-based characterization of bone lesions is therefore critical for diagnosis and treatment planning. Radiomics has emerged as a powerful tool for extracting quantitative information from medical images; however, classical radiomics features are often affected by inter-scanner variability, segmentation dependence, and limited ability to describe lesions with complex biological heterogeneity. This study aims to introduce a t

Impact of Different Exercise Modalities on Visceral Adipose Tissue in Normal Weight and Low-Overweight Individuals: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The "thin outside, fat inside" (TOFI) phenotype, also termed normal weight obesity (NWO), describes individuals with normal body mass index (BMI) but elevated visceral adipose tissue (VAT). Individuals at the lower boundary of the overweight range may also present with excess VAT despite near-normal BMI. Although exercise is widely recommended to improve body composition, its effects on VAT in these populations remain unclear. This review evaluated the effects of different exercise modalities on VAT in adults with BMI ≤27 kg/m2. A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was con

Flexible In-Sensor Computing Strain Sensor for Lower-Limb Gait Recognition.

Flexible strain sensors have attracted considerable attention in gait recognition owing to their ability to adhere directly to the skin near joints and transduce local deformation. In existing work, however, sensor placement and orientation are largely determined by anatomical experience, while multi-channel classification still relies on back-end digital processors, whose power consumption and latency constrain system practicality in wearable scenarios. This paper presents an integrated design path that proceeds from skin-mechanics theory through sensor-layout optimization to analog-domain fr

Exploring spirituality in palliative care services: an All-Ireland survey.

BACKGROUND: Spirituality and spiritual care are recognised as integral components of palliative care practice. Because of the diverse nature of this unique part of humanity, it may be challenging to describe what spirituality is or to ensure that spiritual care is delivered consistently in palliative care settings. However, failure to address the spiritual needs of a person and those who are important to them, who are in receipt of palliative care, can contribute to unnecessary distress. METHODOLOGY: This study employed a mixed-method design. Using a purposefully selected non-probability sampl

Urban radiological risk assessment using HotSpot and Geant4: From probabilistic dose estimates to shielding effects.

Radiological dispersal devices (RDDs) present a significant threat in urban environments due to their potential to deliver high radiation doses over populated areas. This study presents a novel integrated framework for assessing radiological risk from potential urban RDD incidents by integrating probabilistic uncertainty analysis with advanced computational modeling, including automated HotSpot simulations and Geant4-based urban shielding. This combined approach captures both the variability inherent in environmental conditions and the complex interactions of radiation with densely built struc
