Class III camouflage treatment: what are the limits?

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to determine the skeletal, dental, and soft-tissue changes in response to camouflage Class III treatment. METHODS: Thirty patients (average age, 12.4 + or - 1.0 years) with skeletal Class III malocclusions who completed comprehensive nonextraction orthodontic treatment were studied. Skeletal, dental, and soft-tissue changes were determined by using published cephalometric analyses. The quality of orthodontic treatment was standardized by registering the peer assessment rating index on the pretreatment and posttreatment study models. The change in th

Interforaminal implant therapy using a split skin graft--treatment outcome after 13 years.

In implant patients who have extended soft tissue deficiencies, split skin grafts have been performed for the prevention of peri-implant inflammation. The aim of this investigation was to assess a patient who received 2 interforaminal implants and a split skin graft 13 years prior. In addition to clinical, mycologic, and radiographic examinations, the condition of the split skin graft was evaluated using histologic analysis of 3 punch biopsies taken from the mucosa, grafted area, and border between both areas. The implants were found to have an overall good clinical condition. Fungal infection

Treating sensitive cervical areas with ozone. A prospective controlled clinical trial.

PURPOSE: To determine whether the treatment of hypersensitive teeth with gaseous ozone (Healozone, KaVo 1600 ppm) for 60 seconds reduces pain immediately after treatment and in the longer term. METHODS: In three private practices in Switzerland, 31 subjects suffering from hypersensitive teeth were treated with gaseous ozone over a period of 54 weeks (one test and one control tooth in each subject). A cross-over design was chosen. The pain level was measured with a Visual Analogue Scale before and after the treatment. RESULTS: The subjects' pain level was reduced by 55% +/- 5.5% immediately a

Nonsurgical management of interdental papillae loss following extraction of anterior teeth.

When a tooth is extracted, the interproximal papilla recedes and the buccal bone collapses; as a result, restoring an edentulous space in the esthetic zone becomes a challenge. Various surgical reconstructions can be performed with different levels of risk and predictability. This article examines three nonsurgical approaches utilized to manage the same problem. One option involves placing a temporary bridge with an ovate pontic at the time of extraction to support the proximal papillae, the facial soft tissue, and the healing gingival tissue. If some time has passed since the extraction, the

Predictable periimplant gingival esthetics: use of the natural tooth as a provisional following implant placement.

UNLABELLED: Maintaining the interdental papilla and bone height following implant placement has been a challenge for the restorative dentist. Bone resorption following anterior tooth extraction is common and often compromises the esthetics of the final restoration. The tissue must be maintained during the surgical and healing phases to achieve an esthetic outcome. Using the patient's natural tooth as a provisional can help maintain the volume and support the papilla. This article describes a technique to achieve maximum esthetics and preservation of tissue following tooth extraction and implan

A comparative study of coronally advanced flaps with and without the addition of enamel matrix derivative in the treatment of marginal tissue recession.

BACKGROUND: The primary aim of this randomized, controlled, clinical investigation was to evaluate the differences in clinical parameters of root coverage procedures utilizing coronally advanced flaps (CAF) with and without enamel matrix derivative (EMD). Another aim was to evaluate if EMD can influence keratinization of tissues utilizing these procedures. METHODS: Fifty-eight contralateral sites in 17 patients with > or = 2 mm of Miller Class I, II, and III buccal marginal tissue recession were treated. Test sites received CAF plus EMD while control sites were treated with CAF only, with eac

Superficial-layer split-thickness flap for maximal flap release and coronal positioning: a surgical technique.

The aim of this report is to describe the superficial-layer split-thickness flap, which provides maximal flap release and mobilization for coronal positioning. The traditional split-thickness flap technique dissects following the contour of the buccal alveolar plate, leaving a periosteal layer on the osseous surface, while the muscular layer remains with the flap. This limits flap mobilization and can lead to flap retraction during healing because of muscle pull from lip and cheek movement. The superficial-layer split-thickness flap technique dissects following the contour of the external surf

Treating root-surface caries.

This article summarizes the effectiveness of restorative materials used to restore root surfaces, the mechanisms by which these materials reduce caries, and placement techniques for restoring root-surface lesions. Patients may be classified into low, medium, and high caries risk groups for root caries, and specific dental restorative material recommendations are made for each category. Effective plaque control, xylitol-containing chewing gums, antimicrobial agents, fluoride-releasing restorative materials, topically applied fluoride, and fluoride-containing toothpastes provide maximum protecti

Human histologic evaluation of root coverage obtained with a connective tissue with partial thickness double pedicle graft. A case report.

The use of a connective tissue graft combined with a pedicle graft has been proven an effective method to achieve root coverage. However, little is known about the histologic results in humans. A connective tissue with partial thickness double pedicle graft was performed on 2 teeth scheduled for extraction for prosthetic reasons. The procedures were clinically successful (100% and 83.3% root coverage). At 6 months postoperative, the teeth were extracted with conservative block sections and analyzed histologically. Two different healing patterns were seen. The first was characterized by a long

Simultaneous team approach of a crown-lengthening procedure and an operative restoration: technique and long-term effect.

Traditionally, crown-lengthening procedures to expose subgingival caries for operative restorative work are carried out in a two-stage approach. A disadvantage of this procedure is that the gingival margin associated with the treated tooth moves apically; this may create an esthetic problem. Resin-modified glass-ionomer cement has been demonstrated to have good biocompatibility with dental hard and soft tissues. Surgical and restorative procedures were combined at the same appointment in an effort to achieve a restoration with minimal change in the gingival margin. Four patients have been trea

Case Report: Holistic dental care for a child with Hunter syndrome: Addressing dental ramifications, overcoming challenges, and enhancing quality of life.

Hunter syndrome (MPS II), an X-linked recessive lysosomal storage disorder, is a result of deficiency of the iduronate 2-sulfatase enzyme (IDS), leading to cognitive impairment, systemic organ involvement, and increased dental problems. This case report describes the management of a child with Hunter syndrome who was referred to the Department of Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry for pain in the upper front teeth. Intraoral examination revealed severe early childhood caries, prompting planning for full-mouth rehabilitation under general anaesthesia due to the child's uncooperative behaviour.

FAM20A mutations associated with enamel renal syndrome.

We identified two families with an autosomal-recessive disorder manifested by severe enamel hypoplasia, delayed and failed tooth eruption, misshapen teeth, intrapulpal calcifications, and localized gingival hyperplasia. Genetic analyses identified novel FAM20A mutations associated with the disease phenotype in both families. The proband of Family 1 had an altered splice junction in Intron 1 (g.502011G>C; c.405-1G>C) and a missense mutation in Exon 8 (g.65094G>A; c.1207G>A; p.D403N). The missense mutation is notable because D(403) is strictly conserved among FAM20A homologues, and the correspon
