An approach to integrate population mobility patterns and sociocultural factors in communicable disease preparedness and response.

Complex human movement patterns driven by a range of economic, health, social, and environmental factors influence communicable disease spread. Further, cross-border movement impacts disparate public health systems of neighboring countries, making an effective response to disease importation or exportation more challenging. Despite the array of quantitative techniques and social science approaches available to analyze movement patterns, there continues to be a dearth of methods within the applied public health setting to gather and use information about community-level mobility dynamics. Developing and Validating a Clinical Warfarin Dose-Initiation Model for Black-African Patients in South Africa and Uganda.

Warfarin remains the oral anticoagulant of choice in sub-Saharan Africa. However, dosing is challenging due to a highly variable clinical response for a given dose. This study aimed to develop and validate a clinical warfarin dose-initiation model in sub-Saharan Black-African patients. For the development cohort, we used data from 364 patients who were recruited from 8 outpatient clinics and hospital departments in Uganda and South Africa (June 2018-July 2019). Validation was undertaken using the International Warfarin Pharmacogenetics Consortium (IWPC) dataset (690 black patients). Four predi

Transanal total mesorectal excision (taTME) in a single-surgeon setting: refinements of the technique during the learning phase.

BACKGROUND: Transanal total mesorectal excision (taTME) is a safe and effective technique. We have progressively developed a systematic approach in the single-surgeon setting. The aim of this study was to compare our early vs late single-surgeon taTME experience as well as present the technical and logistical modifications that were crucial to achieve successful implementation of a taTME program. METHODS: Review of prospectively collected data on 27 patients who had taTME in June 2015-September 2016 (early cohort) was included and compared with 43 patients who underwent taTME in October 2016-

A systematic review of prevention interventions to reduce prenatal alcohol exposure and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in indigenous communities.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a preventable, lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. FASD negatively impacts individual Indigenous communities around the world. Although many prevention interventions have been developed and implemented, they have not been adequately evaluated. This systematic review updates the evidence for the effectiveness of FASD prevention interventions in Indigenous/Aboriginal populations internationally, and in specific populations in North America and New Zealand, and offers recommendations for future work. Combined effect of new complete dentures and simple dietary advice on nutritional status in edentulous patients: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Individuals who are edentulous have a lower intake of fruit, vegetables, fiber, and protein compared with their dentate counterparts because tooth loss is accompanied by a decrease in ability to chew. Whether or not a combination of prosthetic rehabilitation and simple dietary advice produces improvement in dietary intake among edentulous persons is unclear. We aim to investigate the effect of a simultaneous combination of simple dietary advice delivered by dentists and provision of new complete dentures on dietary intake in edentulous individuals who request new dentures. Potential of shifting work hours for reducing heat-related loss and regional disparities in China: a modelling analysis.

BACKGROUND: As climate change intensifies, the economic losses caused by heat-related labour productivity loss are gaining increasing attention. Shifting work hours has become a prevalent practice to reduce outdoor workers' heat exposure. However, both the potential of this adaptation measure for reducing labour productivity and economic loss and how this potential will change in the future remain unclear. Answers to these questions at the subnational level are important for decision makers to promote the implementation of adaptations and the development of comprehensive strategies to tackle t

Social marketing for the prevention of physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect in children: a protocol for a scoping review on applications and strategies.

INTRODUCTION: Child maltreatment (CM) can have significant and long-lasting consequences over the life course. These include long-term physical injuries and an increased risk for mental illness. Preventive applications are critical to reduce maltreatment, promote early detection and initiate early interventions, and prevent further harm. Social marketing (SM) strategies offer a promising approach for the prevention of CM. They use commercial marketing principles to raise awareness and/or influence behaviour of populations for social welfare purposes. To date, there is no comprehensive overview

Community perceptions and acceptance of ivermectin for malaria control on Sumba Island, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Indonesia has made significant progress in malaria control, however hotspots such as Sumba Island continue to experience high rates of malaria transmission, driven by multiple Anopheles mosquito species. The Sumba Livestock Ivermectin for Malaria (SLIM) trial was conducted to assess the efficacy of ivermectin treatment in livestock as a vector control strategy. This accompanying social science study aimed to explore community perceptions of ivermectin-based malaria interventions, including ivermectin livestock treatment (ITL) and potential mass drug administration (MDA) in humans.

Infectious disease outbreaks in the wake of natural flood disasters: global patterns and local implications.

Climate change is an urgent global health challenge, with floods becoming increasingly frequent and exacerbating the spread of infectious diseases. With its diverse climates and recurring natural disasters, Latin America is particularly susceptible to outbreaks following floods. These events disrupt ecosystems and create ideal conditions for the spread of waterborne and vector-borne pathogens. Floods also damage infrastructure, displace populations, and restrict access to clean water and healthcare services, further compounding public health risks. This review assesses the impact of floods on
