Bone is a dynamic tissue that is continuously being remodeled throughout life. Specialized cells called osteoclasts transiently break down old bone (resorption process) at multiple sites as other cells known as osteoblasts are replacing it with new tissue (bone formation). Usually, both resorption and formation processes are in balance and thereby maintain skeletal strength and integrity. This equilibrium is assured by the coordination of proliferation, migration, differentiation, and secretory functions of the osteoblasts, which are essential for adequate formation and resorption processes. Vitamin K2 is widely used for the treatment of osteoporosis in Japan. To understand the effects of vitamin K2 on bone mass and bone metaboli … e resorption in calcium-deficient rats while maintaining the strength of the long bone in rats with magnesium deficiency. These findings suggest that vitamin K2 may not only stimulate bone formation, but may also suppress bone resorption. Thus, vitamin K2 could regulate bone metabolism in rats, which represented the various models of osteoporosis. However, the effects …

Rats fed abnormally composed isocaloric diets during 21 days (low magnesium, atherogenous, high in proteins or carbohydrates) develop a mean increase in total number of pancreatic A cells, a significant increase of A/B ratio (atherogenous), and hyperglucagonemia in most of the groups under study. Histologic examination reveals calcification most marked in animals under low magnesium and atherogenous diets. They are only scarce following high protein diet; a normal or carbohydrate rich diet nullifies this phenomenon. Independent of the morphologic and functional state of the islets, supplementa

BACKGROUND: Bariatric metabolic surgery is a well-established treatment option associated with significant weight loss and an improvement of metabolic co-morbidities. However, the changes in gastrointestinal anatomy frequently result in nutritional deficiencies.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of biliopancreatic limb length in one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) on micronutrient and protein deficiencies.
SETTING: University hospital, Austria.
METHODS: All patients that were (1) undergoing OAGB between 2012 and 2014, and (2) had at least 3 postoperative follow-up visits were retrospectiv

Refeeding syndrome (RS) is a complex disease that occurs when nutritional support is initiated after a period of starvation. The hallmark feature is the hypophosphataemia, however other biochemical abnormalities like hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia, thiamine deficiency and disorder of sodium and fluid balance are common. The incidence of RS is unknown as no universally accepted definition exists, but it is frequently underdiagnosed. RS is a potentially fatal, but preventable, disorder. The identification of patients at risk is crucial to improve their management. If RS is diagnosed, there is one

This review summarizes the results of published, randomized clinical trials that have examined the impact of administration of micronutrients, singly or in combination to infants, preschool and school children on linear growth. Supplementation of single micronutrients resulted in small or no benefits on linear growth. A meta-analysis of zinc supplementation trials confirmed that zinc has a significant but small impact (0.22 sd units) on length gain in children 0-13 years of age. However, a recent study reported a substantially greater benefit (>1 sd) in stunted and non-stunted breast-fed infan

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a heterogeneous neoplasm of the biliary epithelium that easily infiltrates, metastasises and recurs. Magnesium disbalance is a hallmark of CCA, with the magnesium transporter cyclin M4 (CNNM4) being a key driver of various hepatic diseases. This study aims to unravel the role of CNNM4 in the initiation and progression of CCA.
DESIGN: CNNM4 protein and gene expression were assessed in vitro, in vivo and in patients with CCA. Silencing of CNNM4 was effectively achieved by using small interfering RNA (siRNA) or short hairpin RNA in CCA cell l

INTRODUCTION: nutritional status is an under-studied environmental factor that can impact the phenotypic manifestations of patients with Sickle Cell Anaemia (SCA). This study aimed to define hemato-biochemical parameters and micronutrient status in patients with SCA.
METHODS: this was a cross-sectional study of patients with SCA and hemoglobin genotype HBAA controls at a tertiary health facility in Abakaliki, from 2nd December 2020 to 31st March 2021. Plasma micronutrient levels, haemato-biochemical parameters were analyzed and anthropometric measurements obtained from all participants.

Distinct tomato genotypes possess different tolerance degree to cadmium (Cd), but the mechanisms behind this phenomenon are scarcely understood. To this end, the physiological, biochemical, anatomical, nutritional and molecular mechanisms associated to the plant tolerance against Cd toxicity were investigated in five tomato accessions with contrasting sensitivity to Cd exposure. Firstly, the data revealed that larger biomass loss was not always coupled to higher Cd concentration, indicating that other events, in addition to the internal Cd accumulation, impact tomato performance at early stage

In the period of long development, the human body adapted to specific concentrations of trace elements. Any changes in the trace element content manifesting in a deficiency or excess of metals in the human body may impair the functioning of the skeletal and articular system and of the organs, and may also predispose the body to the development of diseases, i.e., osteoporosis. Our study aimed to analyze the concentrations of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), fluorides (F-), and lead (Pb) in the infrapatellar fat pad (Hoffa's fat pad) of subjects who had undergone a total knee replacement (TKR) surg

Bone repair materials are rapidly becoming a hot topic in the field of biomedical materials due to being an important means of repairing human bony deficiencies and replacing hard tissue. Magnesium (Mg) alloys are potentially biocompatible, osteoconductive, and biodegradable metallic materials that can be used in bone repair due to their in situ degradation in the body, mechanical properties similar to those of bones, and ability to positively stimulate the formation of new bones. However, rapid degradation of these materials in physiological environments may lead to gas cavities, hemolysis, a

Abstract Extract The main metabolic diseases of cattle recognised 50 years ago, ketosis, grass tetany (hypomagnesaemia) and milk fever (hypocalcaemia), are even more important today, and how we view them has changed radically. Prior to 1950, the emphasis in New Zealand was on identifying these diseases and defining clinical signs and tests useful for their diagnosis, so that appropriate treatment could be provided. By the 1970s, metabolic diseases were considered to result primarily from a breakdown of an animal's ability to cope with the metabolic demands of high production rather than from i
