Mechanical testing of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-7 regenerated bone in sheep mandibles.

A new method was developed in this study for testing excised sheep mandibles as a cantilever. The method was used to determine the strength and stiffness of sheep hemi-mandibles including a 35 mm defect bridged by regenerated bone. Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-7 (rhBMP-7) in a bovine collagen type-I carrier was used for the bone regeneration. Initial tests on ten intact sheep mandibles confirmed that the strength, stiffness and area beneath the load-deformation curves of the right and left hemi-mandibles were not significantly different, confirming the validity of using the con

Concomitant removal of mandibular third molars during sagittal split osteotomy minimizes neurosensory dysfunction.

PURPOSE: Inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury is 1 of the most important postoperative complications after sagittal split osteotomy (SSO). The purpose of our study was to investigate the effects of the presence or absence of a mandibular third molar on the neurosensory recovery of the IAN after SSO. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study enrolled a sample composed of patients who underwent SSO to correct mandibular deformities. The primary predictor variable was the status of the mandibular third molar at the time of SSO and it was divided into two levels, present at the time of SS

Stability of hard tissue profile after mandibular setback in sagittal split osteotomies: a longitudinal and long-term follow-up study.

The aim of the study was to conduct a long-term follow-up on the stability of the hard tissues after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) with rigid internal fixation (RIF)to set back the mandible and to compare it with that of mandibular advancement performed by the same team of surgeons and with the same examination protocol. Seventeen consecutive patients (6 females and 11 males) could be re-examined 12.7 years (T5) after surgery. The previous examinations were before surgery (T1), 5 days (T2), and 6.6 (T3) and 14.4 (T4) months after surgery. Lateral cephalograms were traced by hand, d

Impact of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors on major salivary glands and mandibular alveolar bone; a histological, histochemical and biochemical study.

BACKGROUND: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a novel type of antidepressant (AD) that can be used as a first-line treatment for depression and other mental illnesses. Long-term AD use is becoming more frequent, with many people continuing to get therapy for extended periods of time. This surge has been linked to a number of health concerns, including an increased risk of fractures, lower bone mineral density in young adults, and a significantly elevated risk of dry mouth, all of which can have a negative impact on dental health and general quality of life. This study aimed t

Typology of the antegonial notch in the human mandible.

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment for serious malocclusions and fractures of the organ of mastication is a golden standard in medicine. Procedures performed on the mandible require detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the organ. Antegonial notching constitutes a serious technical challenge for surgeons. Therefore, a detailed anatomical description of this structure, which is the subject of this paper, is essential. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analysed 251 human Caucasian mandibles of identified sex and took measurements of all sections describing the mandibular antegonial notch. Depending on the p

Effect of electroporation-mediated transfecting recombinant plasmid pIRES-hBMP2-hVEGF165 on mandibular distraction osteogenesis.

Distraction osteogenesis requires a long consolidation period and has a low but real failure rate. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) accelerate bone deposition in fractures and critical-sized bone defects. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a promising reagent for inducing angiogenesis, and is an essential coordinator of extracellular matrix remodeling, angiogenesis, and bone formation in the growth plate. However, their effects on mandibular distraction osteogenesis are unknown. We investigated the effect of local delivery of plasmid pIRES-hBMP-2-hVEGF165 into a distraction area by

[Bisphosphonates-related osteonecrosis of the jaw: A case report].

Osteonecrosis of the mandible is also called avascular necrosis of the jaw, and it is a rare complication of bisphosphonates. It is characterized with pain, swelling, exposure of bone, local infection and pathologic fractures of the jaw. With the widespread usage of bisphosphonates in bone metastasis of malignant tumors and osteoporosis, this rare complication has received more attention in recent years. Here, we reported a case of bisphosphonates-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) caused by intravenous zoledronic acid for osteoporosis. A 62-year-old female patient with 7-year history of

Platelet-derived growth factor BB enhances osteoclast formation and osteoclast precursor cell chemotaxis.

Enhanced osteoclast formation increases bone resorption, which triggers bone remodeling. Platelet-derived growth factor BB (PDGF-BB) enhances precursor cell homing, angiogenesis, and bone healing, and thereby could also treat osteoporosis. However, the effect of PDGF-BB on osteoclast formation is not fully understood. We investigated whether exogenous recombinant PDGF-BB directly affects osteoclast formation and osteoclast precursor cell chemotaxis. The murine monocyte-macrophage cell line RAW264.7 and bone-marrow-derived macrophages were cultured with recombinant mouse PDGF-BB with or without
