UNLABELLED: The prevalence of AAC in patients attending a Fracture Liaison Service is 27.6%. Prevalent vertebral fractures were associated with AAC, but not with severe AAC in patients without CVD. Fracture location and BMD were not related to AAC or severe AAC.
PURPOSE: Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), osteoporosis and fractures. We aimed to analyze the prevalence and severity of AAC and to assess whether index fracture location, bone mineral density (BMD) and prevalent VFs are associated with AAC in patients with a re

This study assessed the impact of cardiac motion and in-vessel attenuation on coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring using virtual non-iodine (VNI) against virtual non-contrast (VNC) reconstructions on photon-counting detector CT. Two artificial vessels containing calcifications and different in-vessel attenuations (500, 800HU) were scanned without (static) and with cardiac motion (60, 80, 100 beats per minute [bpm]). Images were post-processed using a VNC and VNI algorithm at 70 keV and quantum iterative reconstruction (QIR) strength 2. Calcium mass, Agatston scores, cardiac motion susceptibil

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the interaction of reduced skeletal muscle mass and abdominal obesity on coronary artery calcification (CAC).
DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 19 728 adults free of cardiovascular disease (CVD) who contemporaneously underwent cardiac tomography and bioelectrical impedance analysis were enrolled in a cross-sectional and longitudinal cohort. Skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) was calculated using the following formula: SMI (%) = total appendicular muscle mass (kg)/body weight (kg) × 100 according to sex. CAC presence or incidence was defined as CAC score > 0, and

BACKGROUND: Valvular calcification is central to the pathogenesis and progression of aortic stenosis, with preclinical and observational studies suggesting that bone turnover and osteoblastic differentiation of valvular interstitial cells are important contributory mechanisms. We aimed to establish whether inhibition of these pathways with denosumab or alendronic acid could reduce disease progression in aortic stenosis.
METHODS: In a single-center, parallel group, double-blind randomized controlled trial, patients >50 years of age with calcific aortic stenosis (peak aortic jet velocity >2.5 m

Aortic valve disease is the most common form of heart valve disease in developed countries and a growing healthcare burden with an ageing population. Transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography remains central to the diagnosis and surveillance of patients with aortic stenosis, providing gold standard assessments of valve haemodynamics and myocardial performance. However, other multimodality imaging techniques are being explored for the assessment of aortic stenosis, including combined PET/CT and PET/MR. Both approaches provide unique information with respect to disease activity in the

The phosphaturic hormone FGF23 is elevated in chronic kidney disease (CKD). The risk of premature death is substantially higher in the CKD patient population, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) as the leading mortality cause at all stages of CKD. Elevated FGF23 in CKD has been associated with increased odds for all-cause mortality; however, whether FGF23 is associated with positive adaptation in CKD is unknown. To test the role of FGF23 in CKD phenotypes, a late osteoblast/osteocyte conditional flox-Fgf23 mouse (Fgf23fl/fl/Dmp1-Cre+/-) was placed on an adenine-containing diet to induce CKD. Ser

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of severely calcified lesions is associated with a high risk of angiographic complication, incomplete stent expansion, and restenosis. The prevalence of calcification is increased in diabetics (DM) and the PCI outcome in this population is often suboptimal. Treatment with orbital atherectomy (OA) in severely calcified lesions has been shown to result in favorable procedural outcomes and low reintervention rates; in DM and non-DM. We sought to determine the acute safety of OA in a center without on-site surgical backup in DM and non-DM.

Cardiac ochronosis is a rare complication of alkaptonuria, a disorder of tyrosine metabolism characterized by a triad of dark urine, pigmentation of tissues, and ochronotic arthropathies. When present, cardiac ochronosis generally affects the aortic valve, resulting in aortic stenosis. More rarely, it may affect the mitral valve and the coronary arteries. This report describes the case of a 67-year-old woman with a history of alkaptonuria with severe ochronosis of the coronary arteries and mitral valve who required coronary artery bypass and mitral valve replacement.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is common in asymptomatic chronic dialysis patients and plays an important role in their poor survival. Early identification of these high-risk patients could improve treatment and reduce mortality. Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) has previously been associated with CAD in autopsy studies. Since the AAC can be quantified easily using a lateral lumbar X-ray we hypothesized that the extent of AAC as assessed on a lateral lumbar X-ray might be predictive of the presence of significant CAD in dialysis patients.
METHODS: All patients currently enrolle

BACKGROUND: Risk factors measured in early life have been shown to predict coronary artery calcium (CAC) in adulthood. However, limited data exist on when risk factor profiles of those who develop CAC diverge from those who do not. We investigated the associations of coronary heart disease risk factor trajectories beginning in adolescence and CAC measured at middle-age.
METHODS: CAC was measured among 589 participants aged 39-45years in whom cardiovascular risk factors (serum lipids, blood pressure, body mass index, physical activity, smoking habits, and fruit, vegetable, fish, and butter int

CONTEXT: Experimental data show that dickkopf-1 (DKK1) may be involved in the regulation of arterial calcification. However, clinical data on the association between serum DKK1 levels and severity of abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) are scarce.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to determine the association between serum DKK1 concentration and AAC severity in men.
DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional analysis in the STRAMBO cohort.
SETTING: The cohort was recruited from the general population.
PARTICIPANTS: We examined 1139 male volunteers aged 20 to 87 years. No specific exclusion criteria were used

BACKGROUND: Intracranial artery calcification has been reported to be an independent risk factor for ischemic stroke. Also, existence of a positive correlation has been reported between the presence of arterial calcification and that of ischemic changes in the area supplied by such arteries. While intracranial artery calcification has frequently been observed on computed tomographic (CT) images of the brain in hemodialysis patients, its prevalence has not been reported previously. We investigated our hemodialysis outpatients to determine the prevalence of intracranial artery calcification in t

BACKGROUND: Thoracic (TAA) and abdominal (AAA) aortic aneurysm are life-threatening diseases characterized by dilation, inflammation, and structural weakness; development of pharmacological therapies is desperately needed. CNP (C-type natriuretic peptide) plays a key role in vascular homeostasis, mediating vasodilator, anti-inflammatory, and antiatherogenic actions. Since such processes drive AA, we determined the role of endogenous CNP in offsetting pathogenesis.
METHODS: Tissue from patients with AA was analyzed to determine the consequences on CNP signaling. Ascending and suprarenal aortic

Severe calcification of the bone microvascular network was observed in rats, whereby the bone marrow blood vessels appeared ossified. This study sought to characterize the magnitude of ossification in relation to patent blood vessels and adipocyte content in femoral diaphyses. Additionally, this study confirmed the presence of ossified vessels in patients with arteriosclerotic vascular disease and peripheral vascular disease and cellulitis. Young (4-6 month; n=8) and old (22-24 month; n=8) male Fischer-344 rats were perfused with barium sulfate to visualize patent bone marrow blood vessels. Fe

OBJECTIVE: The presence of a high ankle-brachial index (ABI) is related to stiff ankle arteries due to medial calcification. Recently, this condition has attracted new interest after reports of a worse cardiovascular prognosis, similar to a low ABI. We sought to compare risk factors contributing to a low (< or =0.90) and high (> or =1.40) ABI. Additionally, we hypothesized that in instances of high ABI, occlusive PAD may coexist.
METHOD: This cross-sectional study was conducted at vascular laboratories in a university medical center. The subjects were 510 ambulatory patients (37% had diabetes
