Auditory neuropathy (AN) is a hearing disorder that affects newborns. Those with high-risk neonatal histories, family history of childhood h … idely among patients. Current management ranges from close monitoring of the child's development to cochlear implantation. Neonatal intensive care unit nurses need to be aware of this disorder to help support and educate at-risk families and to alert them of the need to monitor hearing and language development in their infants.

Congenital nasal encephaloceles are rare anterior skull base defects that may predispose patients to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage and s … hitis ossificans and a previously unrecognized nasal encephalocele. The patient underwent bilateral cochlear implantation followed by successful endoscopic repair of the skull base defect. Postoperatively, he demonstrated hearing thresholds within normal ranges and no evidence of recurrence. This case highlights the importance of early recognition of congenital skull b …

Neurofibromatosis 2 is an autosomal-dominant disease, which is characterized by vestibular schwannomas, cataract, retinal hamartomas as well as tumors of the peripheral and central nerve system, demonstrating a variety of expression. The ophthalmologist plays an important role in making the diagnosis, as several ocular manifestations may be shown during childhood, before tumors of the central nerve system become symptomatic. An early diagnosis of NF 2 may prevent deafness by early surgical intervention. Due to primary and secondary reasons such as age-related processes, different sensations li

Relationships between middle ear pressure and non-infection-related cochleovestibular dysfunction have been suggested by several authors. According to some data, vertiginous attacks can be prevented by the insertion of a ventilation tube in patients suffering from Meniere's syndrome. The aim of our study was to investigate if the incidence of eustachian tube malfunction and pathologic middle ear pressure is frequent, and if routine implantation of ventilation tubes is reasonable in ears with dysfunctions of the labyrinth, including clinical Meniere's syndrome. So, we determined in our pressure

HYPOTHESIS: Mild therapeutic hypothermia (MTH) could be delivered to the human inner ear using a localized, noninvasive approach to achieve protective temperature reductions without systemic side effects.
BACKGROUND: MTH has demonstrated protective effects in the cochlea following injuries such as device implantation, ototoxicity, and noise overexposure. It targets key cellular mechanisms, including proinflammatory pathways, oxidative stress, pyroptosis, and apoptosis. However, systemic and invasive methods for MTH carry risks and are less practical for broader clinical applications. Developi

GJB2 variant, causing up to 50 % of autosomal recessive non-syndromic hearing loss, typically show stable hearing profiles and favorable cochlear implant (CI) outcomes. In this case, however, the atypical clinical course prompted further evaluation. A 3-year-6-month-old girl, born at 35 weeks presented with profound bilateral hearing loss detected by auditory brainstem response. : Local glucocorticosteroid ("steroid") therapy is widely used to treat the inner ears of patients with Menière's disease, idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss and in combination with cochlear implants. Applied steroids have included dexamethasone, methylprednisolone, and triamcinolone. In reality, however, this is often not true and the steroid forms commonly applied are dexamethasone-phosphate, methylprednisolone-hemisuccinate, or triamcinolone-acetonide. In each case, the additional component is not a counter-ion but is covalently bound to the molecule to increase aqueous solubility

HYPOTHESIS: High loads forcing the floating mass transducer (FMT) of a single active middle ear implant toward the round window membrane (RWM) affect the backward stimulation of the cochlea.
BACKGROUND: Various factors influence the backward stimulation of the cochlea. We investigated the effects of various loads applied to the FMT together with different coupling techniques at the fully exposed RWM on the vibration transmission.
METHODS: Experimental study on temporal bones with the FMT linked to a load cell mounted on a translation stage moving it against the fully exposed RWM with increas

A cochlear implant may be used to electrically stimulate spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) in people with severe sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). However, these neurons progressively degenerate after SNHL due to loss of neurotrophins normally supplied by sensory hair cells (HCs). Experimentally, exogenous neurotrophin administration prevents SGN degeneration but can also result in abnormal resprouting of their peripheral fibers. This study aimed to create a target-derived neurotrophin source to increase neuron survival and redirect fiber resprouting following SNHL. Adenoviral (Ad) vectors expre

Several studies have shown that treatment with various neurotrophins protects spiral ganglion cells (SGCs) from degeneration in hair-cell deprived cochleas. In most of these studies the neurotrophins are delivered by means of intracochlear delivery methods. Recently, other application methods that might be more suited in cochlear implant patients have been developed. We have examined if round window membrane application of gelfoam infiltrated with a neurotrophin resulted in SGC survival in deafened guinea pigs. Two weeks after deafening, gelfoam cubes infiltrated with 6 μg of brain-derived neu

Francisco Goya produced over 1,800 works during his long career, which earned him a reputation as one of the greatest artists of modern times. When he was 47, he developed a mysterious illness that destroyed his hearing, and for the next 35 years left him "deaf as a stump." Of the diagnoses proposed to date, Susac syndrome is the one most consistent with what little we do know of the character of that illness. If he were alive today, given the severity of his hearing loss, Goya would be treated with a cochlear implant, which might restore his ability to communicate in spoken language, though p

Imaging of the vestibulocochlear nerve has evolved dramatically over the past few decades. The imaging specialist now is involved in the diagnosis of far more diagnostic entities than ever before. With this increased involvement comes the responsibility to increase collective knowledge regarding the pathophysiology of these diagnostic entities. This article is organized in a conventional way and covers congenital deformity of the internal auditory canal, neoplastic and pseudoneoplastic lesions, with special detailed emphasis on schwannoma of the eight cranial nerves (acoustic neuroma), nonneop

The cases of deafness presented here have been selected primarily to illustrate the degree to which the acoustic ganglion has degenerated in profound or total deafness. Examples of seven types of acquired diseases of the inner ear and one type of probable congenital degeneration of uncertain cause are given. The number of surviving ganglion cells in each 5-mm section of the cochlea has been expressed as a percentage of the normal average count corresponding to that section of the organ of Corti. The state of the acoustic ganglion has been correlated with that of the organ of Corti and the peri

One important aspect of improving cochlear implant performance is a good, quantitative understanding of electrically stimulated nerve fibers and the effects of deafness on their behavior. The main principles of a nerve fiber's responses are well understood. The measures describing the responses, such as the refractory period or facilitation, and the effects of deafness on them, have been investigated in different publications and nerve fiber populations. However, a comprehensive analysis of many measures based on a single dataset is still lacking. Using a fiber-specific model-based analysis, w

INTRODUCTION: Electrocochleography (ECochG) measures inner ear potentials in response to acoustic stimulation. In patients with cochlear implant (CI), the technique is increasingly used to monitor residual inner ear function. So far, when analyzing ECochG potentials, the visual assessment has been the gold standard. However, visual assessment requires a high level of experience to interpret the signals. Furthermore, expert-dependent assessment leads to inconsistency and a lack of reproducibility. The aim of this study was to automate and objectify the analysis of cochlear microphonic (CM) sign
