Ozone pollution: a persistent challenge in large cities like Mexico City, Los Angeles and Beijing.

Over the past decade or so, many large cities around the world have made little to no progress in lowering ground-level ozone concentrations, despite significant reductions in key precursor pollutants directly emitted into the atmosphere. Ozone comes from complex chemical reactions in the air that make it difficult to control. Current control measures implemented in some cities have apparently reached their limit. While stricter emission regulations, improvements in technology and cleaner fuels have prevented a return to previous ozone levels, they have not reduced them further. They have trig

Approaches used to monitor the effectiveness of community-led monitoring programmes: a scoping review to inform HIV programmes.

INTRODUCTION: Community-led monitoring (CLM) for HIV is a technique implemented by local community-led organizations and groups that systematically gather data about HIV services to advocate for improvement. This review was conducted to explore fields other than HIV where CLM or similar approaches have been used, and to identify methods and tools used to monitor the effectiveness of such approaches. METHODS: Using a systematic search in PubMed®, Embase® and Web of Science™, we identified publications describing community involvement in the monitoring of public services. We searched for Englis

Factors associated with the initiation of daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis among adolescent girls and young women: findings from the Namibia DREAMS program.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) aged 15-24 years in sub-Saharan Africa continue to face a significant risk of HIV acquisition. Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can reduce the likelihood of HIV acquisition by more than 90% when adherence is optimal. The Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-Free, Mentored, and Safe (DREAMS) program, funded by PEPFAR/USAID and implemented by the Project HOPE Namibia (PHN)-led consortium, provided services in the Khomas, Oshikoto, Zambezi, and Oshana regions. The DREAMS program addresses factors that increase HIV vulnerability among AGYW.

Achieving continuous improvement in reductions in foodborne listeriosis--a risk-based approach.

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen that can cause listeriosis, a severe disease that can lead to septicemia, meningitis, and spontaneous abortion. Ongoing efforts are needed to further reduce the incidence of listeriosis, due to its high mortality rate. The focus of this report is the use of a risk-based approach to identify strategies that will have the greatest impact on reducing foodborne listeriosis. A continuum of risk for listeriosis is observed in the human population, ranging from exquisitely sensitive groups, who are highly immunocompromised and at very high risk of lister

Association of sarcopenia and muscle attenuation with clinical outcomes in patients with diabetic foot: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot (DF) represents a severe and disabling complication of diabetes, closely linked to ulceration, amputation, functional impairment, and an elevated risk of death. Sarcopenia is a syndrome marked by progressive declines in muscle mass and function. Emerging evidence suggests a possible link between DF and sarcopenia. Nonetheless, a systematic evaluation of the influence of sarcopenia on adverse clinical outcomes in individuals with DF remains unavailable. The present investigation aims to systematically assess and quantitatively synthesize the association of sarcopenia a

Use of amniotic membrane in hard-to-heal wounds: a multicentre retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Hard-to-heal (chronic) wounds negatively impact patients and are a source of significant strain on the healthcare system and economy. These wounds are often resistant to standard of care (SoC) wound healing approaches due to a diversity of underlying pathologies. Cellular, acellular, and matrix-like products, such as amniotic membranes (AM), are a potential solution to these challenges. A growing body of evidence suggests that AM may be useful for treatment-resistant wounds; however, limited information is available regarding the efficacy of dehydrated amniotic membrane (DHAM) on mu
