Morbidity by plating in maxillofacial surgery.

BACKGROUND: Aim of this paper is to define the behaviour of osteosynthesis plates in maxillofacial area and to determine when to remove them. METHODS: The records of 123 patients treated with osteosynthesis plates were retrospectively assessed. Each case had a follow-up of not less than 5 years. Removal as a consequence of poor surgery was excluded from the study. RESULTS: Osteosynthesis occurred in the mandible in 198 cases and in the upper maxilla in 146 cases, with a further 23 cases treated by plating in other sites. Plates were removed in 21 cases; the most frequent cause of removal was

Oral cutaneous sinus tract, vertical root fracture, and bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Oral cutaneous sinus tracts (OCSTs) of dental origin are often initially misdiagnosed and inappropriately treated. Accurate diagnosis is especially important in cases of bisphosphonate (BP) therapy because extraction may lead to a risk of osteonecrosis. A case report of misdiagnosis related to a tooth with a vertical root fracture in an oncologic patient treated with BPs is reported here. METHODS: In 2011, a 75-year-old woman was examined at the oral medicine clinic because of pain and swelling of the left submandibular area. The patient's medical history included oral and intra

Dislocation of the intact mandibular condyle into the middle cranial fossa: a case report.

Dislocation of the mandibular condyle into the middle cranial fossa is extremely rare. The authors present a case of superior dislocation of left condyle into the middle cranial fossa. The dislocated condyle was reduced successfully and then a flap of temporal muscle and a thin titanium network were used to repair the defect in the middle cranial fossa.

Case report: Delayed autologous tooth transplantation based on objective bone healing of the extraction socket (4-year follow-up).

Autologous tooth transplantation is one of the best methods to replace a missing tooth when there is a suitable donor tooth. Tooth transplantation is mainly performed immediately after extraction because this is completed in a single surgery and the donor tooth is transferred to fresh recipient site facilitated by the remaining periodontal ligament. However, when transplantation is planned for a severe recipient site with a large bone defect surrounding the affected tooth, delayed transplantation is performed because of the mismatched size of the donor tooth. When bone formation at the recipie

Shaping ability and cleaning effectiveness of Mtwo versus coated and uncoated EasyShape instruments in severely curved root canals of extracted teeth.

AIM: To compare the cleaning effectiveness and shaping ability of Mtwo, PVD-coated and uncoated EasyShape nickel-titanium rotary instruments during the preparation of curved root canals in extracted human teeth. METHODOLOGY: A total of 60 root canals of mandibular and maxillary molars with curvatures ranging between 25° and 35° were divided into three groups of 20 canals. Based on radiographs taken prior to instrumentation with the initial instrument inserted into the canal, the groups were balanced with respect to the angle and the radius of canal curvature. Canals were prepared using a low-

Marginal fit and short-term clinical performance of porcelain-veneered CICERO, CEREC, and Procera onlays.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Onlay preparations are very complex surfaces for computer surface digitization, CAD, and CAM of all-ceramic onlay cores. PURPOSE: This study tested the hypothesis that onlays can be fabricated with CICERO, CEREC, and Procera core technologies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifteen mandibular and 10 maxillary molars were prepared for onlays in 17 patients (11 women and 6 men). The onlay design was experimental. Molars were prepared with deep gingival chamfers in the proximal boxes and around the functional cusps. The nonfunctional cusps were prepared with broad bevels. Eight sto

A Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis to Evaluate and Compare Stress Levels and Distribution Patterns in Lithium Disilicate and Zirconia Crowns.

OBJECTIVE: This article aims to assess and compare the patterns of stress distribution and the biomechanical responses of monolithic zirconia and monolithic lithium disilicate crowns of different occlusal thicknesses using three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 3D FEA model of a mandibular first molar with all supporting structures was constructed. Eight models were developed to simulate clinically recommended preparation thicknesses for each material, including monolithic zirconia (n = 4; occlusal reductions of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm) and monolithic

Chairside Tomosynthesis for Intraoperative Imaging in Implant Dentistry: Clinical Applications and Workflow Considerations.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has become an important component of implant dentistry by providing three-dimensional visualization for diagnosis and treatment planning. However, once implant surgery begins, obtaining additional three-dimensional imaging may require interruption of the procedure and transportation of the patient to a dedicated imaging system. Chairside tomosynthesis offers an alternative approach by providing focused sectional imaging directly within the operatory. This article describes the principles, clinical applications, and workflow considerations of chairside tomos

Cannabis and Wound Healing: A Narrative Review of Current Evidence and Applications to Facial Plastic Surgery.

Cannabis use has increased substantially in the United States, driven by broader legalization, decriminalization, and expanding medical and recreational availability. For facial plastic surgeons, the clinical implications remain difficult to define because "cannabis use" encompasses heterogeneous products and routes, including smoked flower, vaping, concentrates, edibles, pharmaceutical cannabinoids, topical cannabidiol (CBD), and frequent co-use with tobacco or nicotine. Current evidence suggests that systemic cannabis use, particularly inhaled or heavy perioperative use, may be associated wi

Possible association of short-term complications and antimicrobial use in standing equine cheek tooth extractions 2018-2022.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing concerns about antimicrobial resistance, prophylactic antimicrobials continue to be routinely administered in many procedures, including dental extractions. Further evidence-based research is needed on whether their use influences post-operative complication rates. OBJECTIVES: To identify risk factors for short-term complications, associations between complications and antimicrobial use as well as factors leading to antimicrobial use in equine (standing) cheek tooth extractions. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of clinical records. METHODS: Data were extracte

Biomechanical performance of post-and-cores of polyetheretherketone and its composites.

BACKGROUND: Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and its fiber-reinforced composites have been indicated as ideal post-and-cores materials due to its mechanical properties. However, the laboratory evidences of post-and-cores restored with fiber-reinforced PEEK are lacking. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 120 extracted mandibular premolars were treated endodontically and divided into six groups restored with different post-and-core materials (N = 20): (1) prefabricated quartz fiber-reinforced composite (QFRC), (2) polymer-infiltrated ceramic (PIC), (3) cobalt chromium (CoCr), (4) PEEK, (5) 30% glass

The mechanism of bone metabolism in a Sprague Dawley rat model of mandibular osteoradionecrosis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a serious complication of radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. There is currently a lack of data on the dynamic expression of genes related to bone remodeling during the development of mandibular ORN. This study aimed to establish an animal model of ORN in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats, detect the expression of genes related to bone metabolism, observe morphological changes, and clarify the mechanism of ORN. METHODS: A total of 24 male SD rats in group 1 were randomly divided into four groups (n=6/group): group a, normal control; group b, simple tooth extr

Case report: pre-eruptive intra-coronal radiolucencies revisited.

AIM: Pre-eruptive intra-coronal radiolucency (PEIR) describes a radiolucent lesion located in the coronal dentine, just beneath the enamel-dentine junction of unerupted teeth. The prevalence of this lesion varies depending on the type and quality of radiographic exposure and age of patients used for assessment. The aetiology of pre-eruptive intra-coronal radiolucent lesions is not fully understood, but published clinical and histological evidence suggest that these lesions are resorptive in nature. Issues around the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of this lesion are explo

Comprehensive skeletal phenotyping and linkage mapping in an intercross of recombinant congenic mouse strains HcB-8 and HcB-23.

Bone biomechanical performance is a complex trait or, more properly, an ensemble of complex traits. Biomechanical performance incorporates flexibility under loading, yield and failure load, and energy to failure; all are important measures of bone function. To date, the vast majority of work has focused on yield and failure load and its surrogate, bone mineral density. We performed a reciprocal intercross of the mouse strains HcB-8 and HcB-23 to map and ultimately identify genes that contribute to differences in biomechanical performance. Mechanical testing was performed by 3-point bending of

Inpatients with gunshot wounds to the face.

Microvascular free tissue transfer (FTT) is an increasingly used method of reconstruction for traumatic defects of the head and neck. We describe the immediate management, FTT reconstruction techniques, and outcomes of 6 individuals who sustained maxillofacial gunshot trauma and were treated at a single tertiary-care level I trauma center. All 6 patients were white men with a mean age of 33 years. The mandible, nose, and orbital contents were the most frequently affected critical structures. All patients initially underwent primary wound debridement and tracheostomy, with concurrent maxilloman
