Evaluation of internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint by panoramic radiographs compared with magnetic resonance imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Panoramic radiographs are routinely used in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. It would be useful if these radiographs could also provide information about internal derangement (ID) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). METHODS: The sample consisted of 168 condyles in 84 women. They underwent panoramic radiography on 1 of 3 machines and bilateral magnetic resonance imaging of the TMJ on 1 machine. Six panoramic variables were analyzed by 2-factor ANOVA to evaluate differences in condylar morphology with respect to status of the TMJ ID and type of panoramic machine. R

Occlusal patterns in patients with idiopathic scoliosis.

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic scoliosis is an orthopedic condition characterized by faulty posture. It might also be associated with some mild forms of facial asymmetry or dental deviations. The aim of the study was to clinically examine the occlusions of patients with idiopathic scoliosis. METHODS: Ninety-six consecutive orthopedic patients with idiopathic scoliosis were examined. The orthopedic data of this group were recorded from their hospital files. The occlusal features of a random group of 705 Ashkenazi children served as the control. Frequency distributions were compared with the chi-squa

A survey of hypodontia in Japanese orthodontic patients.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the prevalence and distribution of hypodontia in the permanent dentition, excluding the third molars, in a sample of Japanese orthodontic patients. METHODS: Orthopantomograms of 3358 Japanese orthodontic patients (1453 boys and 1905 girls) between the ages of 5 and 15 years were examined for evidence of hypodontia. RESULTS: The prevalence of hypodontia was 8.5% (7.5% for boys, 9.3% for girls) with no statistically significant difference between the sexes. The average number of missing teeth per child was 2.4 (2.5 for boys, 2

Radiolucent lesion of an unerupted mandibular molar.

A coronal radiolucent lesion of an unerupted and partially developed mandibular second molar was coincidentally found during a routine radiographic orthodontic examination of a generally healthy 9-year old girl. The size of the lesion increased continuously during a 2-year observation period. Histologic examination after extracting the tooth proved the lesion to be an idiopathic external coronal resorption. In a review of the literature, we found no original research on the subject. However, the number of case reports suggests that idiopathic external coronal resorptions are quite common in yo

Physical properties of root cementum: Part 5. Volumetric analysis of root resorption craters after application of light and heavy orthodontic forces.

BACKGROUND: In previous studies on root resorption, resorption was quantified by making histologic cuts or by surface area measurements of resorption craters. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effects of orthodontic force magnitude on root resorption craters with volumetric measurements and also to identify the sites that might be predisposed to resorption. METHODS: After an experimental time of 28 days, 36 human premolars previously divided into light-force (25 g) and heavy-force (225 g) groups were extracted and prepared for scanning electron microscope imaging. Pairs of stereo im

Orthodontic treatment of a traumatically intruded tooth with ankylosis by traction after surgical luxation.

This report presents the treatment of a patient with anterior crossbite and displacement of ankylosed maxillary and mandibular right lateral incisors. The maxillary lateral incisor, which was traumatically intruded, was successfully treated with 2 surgical luxations followed by orthodontic traction. The mandibular lateral incisor, which was avulsed and replanted, experienced replacement root resorption during orthodontic treatment and was ultimately extracted. Two years after active orthodontic treatment, the occlusal results were considered satisfactory.

Long-term follow-up of severely resorbed maxillary incisors after resolution of an etiologically associated impacted canine.

BACKGROUND: Resorption of maxillary incisor roots because of an impacted canine is a well-recognized phenomenon that occurs in a surprisingly high proportion of patients with impacted canines. In this retrospective study, we studied a sample of patients in whom the resorption was particularly severe. METHODS: The sample consisted of 11 patients (age, 11.8 +/- 1.2 years) with 20 severely resorbed maxillary incisors. The amount of resorption was measured at the outset (T1), when the impacted canine was distanced from the incisor root area (T2), at the completion of the orthodontic treatment (T3

Can the severity of root resorption be accurately judged by means of radiographs? A case report with histology.

INTRODUCTION: Root resorption of lateral incisors caused by the pressure of erupting canines is a well-known but relatively rare problem in orthodontics and general dentistry. It is usually diagnosed on radiographs. The purpose of this article is to discuss some difficulties associated with evaluating root resorption from radiographs alone. A case report is presented as an example. METHODS: Radiographs showed that an 11-year-old girl had marked root resorption of the maxillary lateral incisors, caused by the impacted permanent canines. The incisors were to be extracted. Several months before

Expression of mRNA for osteoprotegerin and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa beta ligand (RANKL) during root resorption induced by the application of heavy orthodontic forces on rat molars.

INTRODUCTION: Receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa beta ligand (RANKL) activates osteoclast differentiation, whereas this activity is blocked by osteoprotegrin (OPG), so that the relative expression of these 2 proteins might contribute to bone and root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement. We describe experiments with RANKL and OPG mRNA expression in rats subjected to orthodontic forces. It was hypothesized that the ratios of RANKL to OPG expression would increase during root resorption processes. METHODS: Fixed Sentalloy (GAC, Bohemia, NY) closed-coil springs capable of deliver

Effects of cervical headgear and fixed appliances on the space available for maxillary second molars.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined the effects of cervical headgear and fixed appliances on the space available for the eruption of the maxillary second molars. Cervical headgear was the only intervention until a Class I molar relationship was achieved. METHODS: Thirty-four patients (18 girls, 16 boys) with Class II molar occlusions, treated without extractions, were included in this study. Five linear and 4 angular cephalometric measurements were made from pretreatment and posttreatment radiographs. RESULTS: Treatment prevented the mesial drift of the maxillary first permanent molars and the

Augmentation of faciolingual gingival dimensions with free connective tissue grafts before labial orthodontic tooth movement: an experimental study with a canine model.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine in an animal model whether any increase in gingival thickness after placement of free connective tissue autografts is maintained after labial orthodontic tooth movement. MATERIAL: In a split-mouth technique, the maxillary second and third incisors of 4 adult greyhounds were used as experimental, control, and sham-control teeth. The experimental teeth underwent gingival augmentation surgery. Two to 3 months later, the teeth were moved with a bonded orthodontic appliance over 2 to 3 months. Baseline and 2-month retention clinical measurements of g

The nuts and bolts of hemisection treatment: managing congenitally missing mandibular second premolars.

When you treat the congenital absence of mandibular second premolars by extracting the residual deciduous second molar and closing the space, you run the risk of flattening facial fullness, especially in patients with nonextraction features--diminished facial fullness, absence of crowding, and reduced tooth size. This challenge is heightened by the increased likelihood that these features will occur in patients who have agenesis. This article describes a new approach that has been shown to minimize such a loss of anchorage. The technique is called hemisection and involves buccolingual sectioni

Unusual intraosseous transmigration of a palatally impacted canine.

Intraosseous migration of impacted teeth across the midline to the opposite side of the jaw is a rare dental anomaly of unknown etiology. Transmigration of an impacted mandibular canine through the symphysis to the contralateral side of the arch has been documented. Transmigration of an impacted maxillary canine across the midpalatal suture to the opposite side of the maxilla has not been previously observed and is reported here for the first time.

Siblings with spaced arches treated with and without partial glossectomy.

Macroglossia, or enlarged tongue, is thought to be an etiological factor in open bite, bimaxillary protrusion, and dental arch spacing, and it might cause instability after orthodontic treatment. Partial glossectomy to reduce tongue size might be a useful method of solving these problems. In this report, we describe orthodontic treatment of 2 siblings with enlarged tongues and arch-space problems. The sister, whose tongue was larger and spacing problem more severe, was treated with a partial glossectomy; her brother refused surgery and was treated with a tongue-crib appliance. Stability after

Relationship between internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint and dentofacial morphology in women with anterior open bite.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior open bite is known to be associated with internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This study examined the relationships between internal derangement and dentofacial morphology in women with anterior open bite. METHODS: Fifty-one women with anterior open bite were enrolled in this study. The sample was divided into 3 groups based on magnetic resonance imaging of bilateral TMJs: normal disk position, disk displacement with reduction, and disk displacement without reduction. One-way analysis of variance was used to compare the 3 groups with respect to the
