The usefulness and limitations of combined Tc-99m pertechnetate and Ga-67 citrate imaging of salivary gland disorders.

The usefulness of combined Tc-99m and Ga-67 scans in diagnosing salivary gland disorders was evaluated in a total of 31 patients. Out of 6 patients with Warthin's tumor, 4 showed a typical pattern of high-activity in the gland with retention of Tc-99m, but without an affinity for Ga-67. Out of 9 patients with pleomorphic adenoma, 8 showed a "cold" area in the tumor by Tc-99m and 5 of the 9 patients had accumulated Ga-67. Five of 6 patients with malignant tumor showed an affinity for Ga-67. Nine of 10 patients with sialadenitis showed diffuse uptake of both Tc-99m and Ga-67 in the involved glan

Evaluation of craniofacial surgery in the treatment of facial deformities.

Surgical access to the cranial, orbital, and facial areas, as developed by Tessier, has produced not only definitive repair of previously uncorrectable congenital deformities such as orbital hypertelorism and facial stenosis (e.g., Crouzon's, Apert's syndromes) but also has improved markedly the treatment of traumatic and neoplastic defects. The surgical approach allows complete dissection of facial soft tisses including the orbits from the underlying bones followed by corrective osteotomies and fixation. Mobilization of the frontal lobes through a frontal bone flap exposure may be required. T

Combined Anterolateral Thigh and Tensor Fasciae Latae Flaps: An Option for Reconstruction of Large Head and Neck Defects.

PURPOSE: The advent of microvascular free tissue transfer has provided the reconstructive surgeon with an enormous array of treatment options for reconstruction of large head and neck defects. However, when indicated by defect size, the need for more than 1 flap not only increases surgical complexity but also patient morbidity. The combination of the anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap and the tensor fascia latae (TFL) flap can be used to reconstruct such complex head and neck defects, thereby minimizing any additional morbidity that would be imposed by an additional flap harvest site. The present

Diagnostic performance of radiomic features from FS-T2WI for parotid tumor classification: A comparison of deep learning and machine learning models.

Accurate discrimination of benign and malignant parotid tumors prior to surgery is of great clinical significance. Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) still has limitations in terms of objective quantification, and the optimal radiomic modeling strategy for parotid lesions has yet to be established. We extracted radiomic features from fat-suppressed T2-weighted (FS-T2WI) images of 102 patients with pathologically confirmed parotid tumors and constructed four machine learning models (logistic regression, gradient boosting, random forest, and LightGBM) as well as four tabular deep lear

Is There an Ideal Method of Predicting Postoperative Complications Following Major Head and Neck Procedures?: A Comparative Analysis of Three Frailty Indices.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a critical determinant of surgical outcomes in head and neck surgery, given that patients often present with multiple comorbidities. Identifying the optimal frailty index for preoperative risk stratification can enhance perioperative management and postoperative outcomes. The objective of this study was to compare the predictive accuracy of the modified frailty index-5 (mFI-5), the risk analysis index for administrative data (RAI-A), and the revised risk analysis index (RAI-Rev) in forecasting postoperative complications and nonhome discharge following soft tissue free-f

MRI and CT imaging characteristics in parotid tumors with false-negative fine-needle aspirations.

BACKGROUNDS: Preoperative imaging, particularly with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans, plays a crucial role in distinguishing between benign and malignant parotid gland tumors, while the reliability of Ultrasound-Guided Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) in diagnosing these masses remains a topic of debate. METHODS: This two-center retrospective analysis was conducted on 347 patients with parotid gland tumors who had FNA and preoperative imaging (CT or MRI). All patients underwent surgery and final histopathological examination was available, along with complete m

Characterization of an ETV6-NTRK3 rearrangement with unusual, but highly significant FISH signal pattern in a secretory carcinoma of the salivary gland: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Fusions of neurotrophic tropomyosin receptor kinase genes NTRK1, NTRK2 and NTRK3 with various partner genes occur in both common and rare tumours and are of paramount predictive value due to the availability of very effective pan-Trk inhibitors like Larotrectinib and Entrectinib. Detection of NTRK fusions is mainly performed by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and next generation sequencing (NGS). The case described here showed a very unusual, but highly significant FISH signal pattern with an NTRK3 break apart probe, indicative of a functional NTRK3 rearrangement. CASE P

Can sparing of the superficial contralateral parotid lobe reduce xerostomia following radiotherapy for head and neck cancer?

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to see whether sparing the superficial contralateral parotid lobe can help limiting xerostomia following radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. METHODS: 88 patients that were included in two prospective randomized studies were analysed in the current study. Using the dosimetry of both the parotid glands, we divided our patients in four groups. Group 1 includes patients where we were able to reduce the radiation dose below the threshold in order to spare both the ipsilateral and contralateral parotid glands, Group 2 consists of patients where only the co
