Assessing tick attachments to humans with citizen science data: spatio-temporal mapping in Switzerland from 2015 to 2021 using spatialMaxent.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are the primary vectors of numerous zoonotic pathogens, transmitting more pathogens than any other blood-feeding arthropod. In the northern hemisphere, tick-borne disease cases in humans, such as Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis, have risen in recent years, and are a significant burden on public healthcare systems. The spread of these diseases is further reinforced by climate change, which leads to expanding tick habitats. Switzerland is among the countries in which tick-borne diseases are a major public health concern, with increasing incidence rates reported in

Identifying and predicting heat stress events for grazing dairy cows using rumen temperature boluses.

Heat stress events in dairy cows are associated with behavioral and physiological changes such as seeking shade, increased respiration rate and body temperature, reduced milk production, and psychological distress. Knowledge of the relationship between weather and animal responses to heat stress enables automated alerts using forecast weather, aiding early provision of shade or other mitigation practices. While numerous heat stress indices for cattle have been developed, these have limitations for cows exposed to wind and solar radiation (i.e., predominantly grazing outdoors or managed on past

A Scoping Review of Dingo and Wild-Living Dog Ecology and Biology in Australia to Inform Parameterisation for Disease Spread Modelling.

Background: Dingoes and wild-living dogs in Australia, which include feral domestic dogs and dingo-dog hybrids, play a role as reservoirs of disease. In the case of an exotic disease incursion-such as rabies-these reservoirs could be a threat to the health of humans, domestic animals and other wildlife in Australia. Disease spread models are needed to explore this impact and develop mitigation strategies for responding to an incursion. Our study aim was to describe relevant information from the literature, using a scoping review, on specific topics related to dingo and wild-living dog ecology

[Family Environmental Unpredictability and Adolescent Physiological and Psychological Health: The Buffering Role of Positive School Climate].

Childhood environmental unpredictability, defined as the spatial-temporal variation of adverse experiences (Young et al., 2020), has been identified as an essential feature of adversity that has important developmental implications (Ellis et al., 2022). Prior work has linked environmental unpredictability to mental health problems (Koss et al., 2025) and dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis (Doom et al., 2024). However, most studies have treated unpredictability as a static construct, overlooking variability in environmental experiences over time. Although the distinc

Layperson-Friendly AI Translation of Medical Documents to Improve Doctor-Patient Communication: Protocols for the AI-INFOCARE and AI-MEDTALK Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Many patients struggle to understand referral letters and discharge summaries; low health literacy is prevalent, and short consultations limit explanations. Large language models (LLMs) can translate clinical jargon into layperson language, but their impact on doctor-patient communication in real care remains untested. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine whether providing an artificial intelligence (AI)-generated, medically validated layperson-language translation of key medical documents before a consultation improves the quality of doctor-patient communication. METHODS: We

Monsoon Flooding and Undernutrition Among Children in Bangladesh: A Population-Level Analysis of the 2017 Monsoon Flood.

BACKGROUND: Flooding puts young children at risk of adverse nutritional outcomes. With climate change expected to increase the frequency and intensity of flooding, it is important to understand relationships between flooding and childhood undernutrition to inform policy design. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine the relationship between flood exposure and undernutrition in children younger than age 5 years in Bangladesh; investigate heterogeneity in this relationship by geography, child sex, and child age; and test whether socioeconomic status, water access, and repeated flood exposure mo

Silicate fertilizer mitigates methane emissions from rice paddies by enriching Burkholderia to modulate microbial interactions.

Methane emissions from rice paddies are a major source of greenhouse gases, and silicate fertilizer (SF) derived from blast furnace slag has emerged as an environmentally friendly amendment that reduces methane release. SF modifies the soil redox environment by supplying electron acceptors such as iron, but the microbial mechanisms underlying methane mitigation remain unclear. Here, we combined metagenomic profiling, microbial isolation, and greenhouse experiments to show that SF consistently enriched Burkholderia vietnamiensis together with the methanotrophs in the rice rhizosphere. Climate drivers of mesophyll conductance: temperature and water deficit alter CO2 diffusion and leaf anatomy in cotton.

Mesophyll conductance (gm) limits CO2 delivery to Rubisco, yet its responses to temperature, heat and water deficit are poorly resolved in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum). We characterised photosynthetic and gm temperature responses in five Gossypium species, then examined cultivated G. hirsutum and the Australian native Gossypium bickii under combined elevated temperature and soil water deficit to link physiological responses with mesophyll anatomy. Plants were grown under controlled glasshouse conditions. We quantified gm using simultaneous gas exchange and online stable carbon isotope discrimin

Parenting Profiles in Chinese Preschool Families: Parental Emotional Intelligence and Children's Social Competence.

Parental emotional intelligence (EI) has been associated with children's socio-emotional development, yet less is known about how parental EI is associated with naturally occurring configurations of parenting practices. This cross-sectional study investigated two complementary statistical indirect associations connecting parental EI to preschoolers' social competence using a sample of 13,398 Chinese families: a variable-centered pathway via positive and negative parenting practices, and a person-centered pathway via distinct parenting profiles. Exploratory latent profile analysis yielded four

Meteorologically adjusted regression analysis of urban air quality in Dhaka, Bangladesh, during pre-, during-, and post-lockdown periods (2017-2023).

This study investigates long-term air quality variability in Dhaka, Bangladesh, across pre-lockdown, lockdown, and post-lockdown phases of the COVID-19 pandemic (2017-2023). Unlike prior pollutant-specific or satellite-based analysis, this work integrates ground-based pollutant records with meteorological datasets to extricate anthropogenic influences from climatic variability. A methodological framework combining meteorological adjustment with multiple linear regression (MLR) modeling was applied to evaluate the relative effects of traffic activity and atmospheric conditions on major urban po

Shifting PM2.5 Control from Mass to Toxicity for Health Equity Worldwide.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) remains the leading cause of premature deaths, despite declining mass concentrations of PM2.5 in the atmosphere. Age-standardized attributable death rates demonstrated divergent trends worldwide over the past decade, indicating that the uniform toxicity assumption underlying current regulations warrants re-examination. In this perspective, we synthesize recent advances in toxicological evaluation, epidemiological research, and modeling studies to advocate for a toxicity-based control as a future promising option. Incomplete combustion sources, especially residen

Maximizing the Value of Learning Assistants for Students' Belonging, Mattering, and Confidence in Gateway STEM Courses.

Learning Assistants (LAs) can reduce psychosocial barriers in gateway science courses. In this study, we specify the impact on students from different demographic groups. An inductive analysis of group interviews with 33 students from introductory biology and general chemistry courses revealed six narratives that capture students' experiences with course structures, people, and personal connections. All students valued varied, flexible resources, but other narratives differed across groups. Underrepresented racial/ethnic and first-generation students described active and collaborative learning

Seasonal Variation of Gut Bacterial Community in Wild Apodemus agrarius Is Associated With Intrinsic and Extrinsic Environments.

Environmental factors and the reproductive status of animals have been reported to influence host gut microbial community structure significantly. To date, there is a lack of integrated research reporting the relationships among environmental factors, gut microbial structure, and the life processes in animals. This study collected monthly temperature, precipitation, and vegetation indices in the sampling site, and body size metrics as well as reproductive indicators in wild Apodemus agrarius (Pallas, 1771) from 2016 to 2023; and also collected gut microbes in the monthly animal populations fro

Polyploidy meets the Cape: Evolutionary dynamics of Heliophila (Brassicaceae).

The Cape Floristic Region (CFR), a global biodiversity hotspot, provides an exceptional setting for studying plant diversification. The South African genus Heliophila (Brassicaceae), notable for its species richness and morphological diversity, offers a unique system for examining the evolutionary role of polyploidy. Using an integrative framework combining phylogenomics, cytogenetics, and floral pigment biochemistry, we reconstructed the genus's evolutionary history based on ITS and 48 nuclear markers from 392 accessions representing over 120 taxa. Our analyses resolved four major clades orig

Atmospheric aging effects of carbonaceous aerosols in a near-roadside environment: Insights from chemical composition and optical properties.

Traffic-derived carbonaceous aerosols are key drivers of urban climate, yet their evolution from exhaust to ambient air remains unelucidated. This study characterizes the spatiotemporal evolution of near-road carbonaceous aerosols (5-50 m) through chemical and optical analyses across seasons. Total carbonaceous concentrations, especially organic carbon (OC), decreased sharply with distance from the road during daytime observations. The OC/elemental carbon (EC) ratios declined from 3.0 ± 1.7 at 5 m to 1.7 ± 1.5 at 50 m, with the steepest decline (1.3-fold) occurring between 5 and 15 m, identify

A naturally synonymous mutation modulates an ERK-centered regulatory network to mediate thermotolerance divergence in Crassostrea oysters.

Kinase-mediated phosphorylation is crucial for thermal adaptation. While extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) signaling is well characterized in model organisms, its functional divergence and genetic regulation in marine species with distinct thermal adaptations remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the genetic basis of differential ERK activation under heat stress using two oyster subspecies from distinct thermal niches: Crassostrea gigas and Crassostrea angulata. Combining ERK inhibition assays with heat stress treatments, followed by proteomic and phosphopro

Environmental assessment of municipal solid waste composting: comparing landfilling and incineration scenarios towards a sustainable approach.

Driven by the high content of organic materials in municipal solid waste (MSW) of 70% in Iran and the growing demand for mineral fertilizer, refinement of composting technology is imperative. In the pursuit of environmental sustainability, further investigation into the life cycle assessment of the composting process and end-of-life waste management must be conducted. Hence, this study scrutinizes the environmental burdens of the composting plant operation from cradle to gate. Because 50% of raw MSW was not converted to compost, its final disposal was evaluated based on incineration, landfill,
